Still learning - When I lived in Egypt, Palestine then Jordan it always seemed the people were more interested in learning or practicing or using english than letting me practice arabic. Even those who said 'sure I'll help you learn', they'd often want to use english because of the million and one questions they had about America, the people, the culture etc etc. Seems they believed the media and movie hype too about us like we did about them.
Anyway my goal is to regain what was lost when prejudices in the past caused my family on one side to deny it's heritage and language out of fear of others around us. But my preference is to learn the language the way a baby learns. No baby comes into this world with a base language that they associate for example english with if their parents speak english, thus they learn by hearing something repeatedly, associating it with an image, sound, meaning etc. That's what I'm working on and it's my hope through these discusss to find others who could perhaps help in the way of correcting something if I have it wrong, without explaining it grammatically, just simply say no it's said this way or spelled this way etc. I plan to learn grammar rules later. My goal is to learn to speak it. Just that. I already know basics, some arabic from my time over seas which gives a head start already. I won't need the alphabet I know this already, plus the pronunciation I already know, and some basic things like hello salaam, and my name is, ana mina. etc etc. If you're a native speaker who'd like to have help in english I'd be more than happy to help via a language exchange. Esp since american english has some confusing things about it, like how we speak in slang mostly, and the text books or teachers don't tach you that :)

frustrated - Chicago apple, I just wanted to say thanks for trying, but it seems you're not understanding me. English to arabic and arabic to english isn't really how I wanted to learn. I know it's possible to learn a language by definition and usage instead of word association because I've done just that with what french I know, and I'm learning gaelic the same way. It's easier for me, it sticks in my memory more clearly when I use images and definitions instead of word to word. I'm sorry but I really am looking more to learn arabic the way I was picking it up before, it's just it went so slow in jordan because everyone kept wanting to practice their english as well as ask me about the states. The material I have which I began with is called instant immersion. There's no english used, only arabic, images and such. If anyone's familiar with this method, that's really what would help me best. To know the meanings of words, the definitions especially since so many words have more than one english word they can be associated with, it's less confusing if the definition is understood for each, and how it's used in what instance, etc.
