Bengali greeting and introductions - Dear All,

This is the third basic lesson in Bengali - if there is a more proficient speaker out there in the language forum we invite you to this Bengali forum to share your language skills with some very hungy students who are eager to learn.

Greetings and Introductions in Bengali - lesson 3

Greeting in Bangladesh will vary depending upon who you are trying to talk with - the greetiings will depend upon the religon and the custom of the person with who you are talking - Hindus, Muslim or Christian. However, don't wory too much Bangladesh people are very forgiving of foreigners (bi-deshi)trying to speak the language.

GREETINGS
Hello-
Hindus: nomoskar
Muslim: salam-a-lekum (arabic)- Peace be on you

A hello in Bangladesh is not a simple hi how are you?, but an expression of love, affection, wishing well and joy - I am very glad to see you.

Therefore to a Hindu you might say -
nomoskar, (apni keamon arsen?)- Hello, how are you (polite)
nomoskar, (tomi keamon arsen?)- Hello, how are you (informal)
nomoskar, (tui keamon arsen?)- Hello, how are you (intimate)

Reply to greetings:
You have just been asked - how are you? (apni keamon arsen?) and you reply- I am well - (ami valo arsi)

INTRODUCTIONS:
My name is - Markus - (amar nam Markus) what is your name? apnar nam ki? I am very pleased to meet you. (khub valo laglo alap hoye.

How old are you? (you can ask these questions in Bangladesh no one is offended)
apnar boyos koto (remember that "s" can have the sh sound or the "s" sound but mostly it is "sh"

GOOD-BYE:
When you say good bye you would say:
abar dakha hobe - I hope that we meet agai. ('b" and "v" can sound the same.

See if you can practice on a Bengali speaking person - they will be delight that you are learnin gthe language and should be happy to help you - all the best till next time.

Markus
