| A little training! - I`m starting this thread as I see many of you want to learn Bulgarian, but as we all know, there should be some more specific steps to it.So, join in and let us get it over with:-) Имам приятел от София. Пушиш ли? Моята котка е бяла. Нямам куче. Моята сестра се казва Мария. Обичам да танцувам. Не мога да пея. Знаеш ли къде сме? Колко ябълки имаш? Какви филми харесваш? | - Ciao Katichka, Grazie per avermi risposto l’altro giorno, e per la tua volontŕ d'insegnarci il bulgaro. E anche questo esercizio era stato utile. Sapevo quasi tutto... perň...la cosa che mi preoccupa molto č che posso capire il bulgaro (perché le nostre due lingue sono cosě simile), ma non posso parlare la lingua. Il mio migliore amico qui in Canada e un ragazzo Bulgaro e lui mi ha fatto un cd della musica bulgara, con testi di canzoni. Ho letto anche “Pod Igoto”, il romanzo di Ivan Vezov, e la poesia bulgara. Perň...sto facendo molti errori di grammatica e sintassi :( Il mio amico dice sempre: “важното е да се разбираме, а не да говорим”...ma...alora...quando lui č in Bulgaria dove sta visitando la sua famiglia, vorrei usare il tempo per praticare questa bellissima lingua. Mi piacerebbe tanto se mi potresti suggerire alcuni buoni libri, e qualche sito di grammatica bulgara. Non deve essere un sito di grammatica nel inglese...anche nel bulgaro funzionerebbe bene . | - Well done, Dolores! If you have read poetry and one of the heaviest author in our literaure - the one with the richest vocabulary (Ivan Vazov), then I hope you can join in the games I`ve started (well, as you se, not many responses) or start ones of your own and I`ll correct you and the ones who take part in them. It appaears to me among the best ways to help sb at distance. I`ll look for interesting Bg sites and grammar explanations and post as soon as I find any. Meanwhile I`m here for more questions regarding Bulgarian language, vocabulary and Bulgaria. A few more sentances to translate: Имам нови приятели. Уча много, защото ми харесва. | A few new sentences to challenge you:-)))) - Горещо е. Имаш ли още вода? Килимът е червен. Живея в голям градски квартал. Страхувам се. Търся работа като готвач. Безработен съм. Работя като преподаавател / продавач / програмист / адвокат. Къде е захарта? В колко часа започва концерта? Какво кафе предпочиташ? I`m stil holding to the Present Tense, on purpose. In several sentences the notorious Bulgarian article is used - I`l explain it soon if sb asks me to...well, I don`t have any grammar books here in Croatia, so I`ll try to do it in a practical way and I`l hope that other Bulgarian users wil contribute as well.Hm, sounds difficult but it ain`t realy. So try these sentences, just a couple of them haev this article. And for now - if you see the word in a slightly different form in the dictionary, then it has an article at the end in my sentence. Трябва ли ти помощ? – Treba li ti pomoć? One question…I’m curious about the reflexive verbs and how they function in Bulgarian. Per example…in Serbian we have verbs like – to have a bath- okupati se…that ‘se’-short form of ‘sebe’ in the verb’s infinitive form automatically indicates that the person who does the action at the same time is also a direct object of that action. Like…Kupam se- I’m having a bath. However, when word ‘se’ is not present in the verb’s infinitive form, it means that the verb is transferable…eg. Kupam bebu. – I’m giving a bath to the baby. Is it the same with Bulgarian verbs…coz I noticed ‘se’ in your sentence Искам да се науча да карам кола… what is that ‘se’ there? Does it have the same function as the Serbian one? | About reflectives - Good thinking, Dolores! Everyone, don`t fel excluded, Dolores is a bit more advanced, but it does not mean you can`t try! As for reflective verbs, yes, it is the same as in Serbian. In other words, there are lots of them - in fact most verbs are like this: If you use them to indicate that sb/sth affects sb/sth else then you don`t ned a reflective form. On the other hand, if you want to say that sb does sth to themselves, then you ned to add "se" to the verb. Like this: The verb is мия, meaning wash. If you say I wash the dishes, you say Аз мия съдовете. If you need to say that you wash yourself, then it will be Аз се мия. And here are the other forms: Аз се мия Ти се миеш Той/Тя/То се мие Ние се мием Вие се миете Те се мият Now try to translate these sentenses with the reflectives. It will be at the same time a good illustration. Хранете се внимателно! Пазете се от това куче! Върни се преди 10ч. Научи се да танцуваш. Грижа се за нея. (Beware, this verb is only reflective, it cannot be used on its own, without се) Страхувам се за теб. (The same here, this verb is only used with се) | |

| answering first - dolores, by all means go ahead and translate them ahead of anyone you like. all i need to do is avoid reading your answers, and then i can still do the Phrases myself. your answering first won't make me feel excluded at all, so don't worry. | |

Научи се да танцуваш. – Learn how to dance. Грижа се за нея. - I worry about her. Страхувам се за теб. – I fear for you. One more thing…I don’t know if in any other post on Bulgarian forum people were explaining this, so I apologize in advance if I’m repeating the question…I was wondering if there is any way to distinguish in writing formal ‘you’ – ‘Вие’ (учтива форма) and ‘вие’ – ‘you’ plural.
