| Bulgarian word game 4 - Each of us will write a plural to the noun above and leave a noun in the singular for the person below, like this: Example: вода - води (feminine), water дете - деца (neut), child, kid Who will be next, my word is: маса (f) - table | |
| dolores7 | Tuesday 17th of May 2005 01:32:21 PM |
| - here we go again...the same happened to this posting...i continued your game Katichka on the 12th of May i think, and nothing is here anymore...anyways, let's play the word game :) маса - маси (feminine), table and two more words for the rest of you: къща (f) - house човек (m) - man Good luck! | |
| drugarrr | Tuesday 17th of May 2005 06:36:27 PM |
| plurals - i am not up to plurals yet in my lessons, but i hope to catch up soon | |
| Morrighan | Tuesday 17th of May 2005 09:33:17 PM |
| - къща - къщи (f) - house човек - хора (m) - man So next will be: птица (f) - a bird котарак (m) - a male cat Your turn! :) | |
| dolores7 | Wednesday 18th of May 2005 12:50:31 AM |
| - Thanks a lot Morrighan: птица - птици (f)- bird котарак - котараци (m)- a male cat And the new ones: книга (f)- a book прозорец (m)- window | |
| katichka | Wednesday 18th of May 2005 12:57:02 AM |
| - Wow!I`m reallly happy this game kicked in as it will be very helpful to you - in Bulgarian besides rules there is a great number of exceptions as far as plurals are concerned, but you`re doing great, kep on, I se for now no mistakes:-))))) I keep my fingers crossed for you! Drzim vam fige (HR) Стискам ви палци! | |
| Morrighan | Thursday 19th of May 2005 09:11:31 PM |
| - книга - книги (f)- a book прозорец - прозорци (m)- window Those were easy ones :D. And how about these: любов (f) - love (I confess, it's a hard one ;) театър (m) - a theater | |
| dolores7 | Friday 20th of May 2005 12:15:29 PM |
| - Здравей Morrighan, Honestly, I have no the slightest idea…I’m just gonna guess it that as an abstract noun word ‘love’- любов might not have plural at all…please do correct me if I’m wrong And for the word театър - театъри (m) - a theatre Here are some more examples: моряк (m) – a sailor свят (m) – world And Morrighan, thanks a lot for these exchanges! Cheers dolores | |
| katichka | Friday 20th of May 2005 04:24:02 PM |
| - Well done, Morrighan! Dollores and everyone, a little correction> Любов - Любови - well, it is trues, the plural here is rarely used, but it can be formed. Театър - Театри - In this case Ъ is dropped in the plural. Don`t ask me why, there are plenty of such cases. Keep on! | |
| dolores7 | Friday 20th of May 2005 06:19:58 PM |
| - thanks Katichka! | |
| Morrighan | Sunday 22nd of May 2005 03:38:36 PM |
| - :) моряк - моряци (m) – a sailor свят - светове (m) – world Well, I'll change the rules just for a while, because I was wondering about something... I'll give you the word in plural and you'll have to find its form in singular, ok? So, the word is: предци (m) - forefathers, ancestors I'm not sure about it so I'm asking you :) | |
| katichka | Monday 23rd of May 2005 08:09:48 PM |
| - Zdravej Morrighan! Great word you`ve got there, but I think it has no singular...U can say both праотец or прародител, or if it is sb you are related to - even прадядо or прапрадядо. I like the new rules, so we can play both ways! Find the singular to the plural of the following: хора (the meaning here is people) хора (this time put the stress on the last syllable and you`ll have a traditional Bulgarian dance in the plural) | |
| dolores7 | Tuesday 24th of May 2005 03:01:27 PM |
| - zdravei! i also read at one place that you can use "predshestvenik" too, so...a variety of expressions...a beautiful thing about languages...tells so much about the importance and perception of certain cultural concepts. and let's see about 'хора' хора- people....we already actually had this word above...so, singular form would be 'човек'...is there any other word that can be used? and хора- folklor dances, i would assume it's хорo (in serbian we call it oro) that's about it for now...actually, i would appreciate if you post examples of some of the homonyms in bulgarian...it would be nice learning some of them blagodaria | |
| katichka | Wednesday 25th of May 2005 02:24:21 PM |
| - Great, Dolores, yes, predshestvenik can be also used:-)) Ok, I`ll soon start a thread with tricky words - ones that are written the same but have nothing else in common or ones that sound very similar but in fact are not. New words to do: Find the singular for: цветя - (the stres is on the last syllable) Find the plural for: момче момиче Keep on everyone! | |
| Morrighan | Wednesday 25th of May 2005 09:14:38 PM |
| - Thanx for the help :) I found "предтеча" for singular form of "предци". Sounds strangely, but I think it can be used as well. Although I don't think it's used often... цветя - цвете момче - момчета момиче - момичета Next words: лист (m)- листо (n)- Your turn ;) Слънчеви поздрави на всички: Morrighan :) | |

| - i don't know what it is, but here's a word for pluralizing. поп is that right? its the best i can do, with my limited infantile mind. can i ask, does anyone know what this word means: сойка? i think that's right, its used to modify птица аз не често мисла о бьлгарски ездик. чао. мене | |
| Morrighan | Thursday 26th of May 2005 06:31:01 PM |
| Сойка - сойка - jay (Garrulus glandarius) Yes, it's a kind of bird, you can find some info here: http://www.birdsofbritain.co.uk/bird-guide/jay.htm Hope it will be usefull :) Morrighan | |
| stormgoblin | Monday 30th of May 2005 10:56:45 AM |
| - thank you, morrighan, that's very nice of you. i wonder how that word was created...it was used in a song context. like запевала е сойка птица мисли е ли човек, which tense that is? see you around, мене | |
| Morrighan | Tuesday 31st of May 2005 11:05:51 PM |
| - Sorry :( I don't understand what you mean. мисли е ли човек... - what did you mean? And yes, it sounds like a folk song. It's maybe a girl, compared to a bird. :) And at the end of a letter we usually write "аз", "мене" means "me", not "I" :) See you around! Morrighan | |
| stormgoblin | Wednesday 01st of June 2005 01:05:30 PM |
| - thanks morrighan for the clarification i suppose, but no it is something about wake up the jay bird is singing, and its about lovers marrying or something of the like. yeah, they need to come up with new song material. maybe this generation of lyricists can create new types of songs. like maybe the trials and tribulations of a samurai cowboy. maybe that would be nice. well, they have guerillas in bulgaria, so i guess that's the same, almost, actually. that was supposed to mean "does anyone know...." i do happen to know what mene means, and it would sound dumb in english if i closed a letter saying "from I" but "from me" sounds much better in the context which i use it. its really unimportant, but if that's how you do it in bulgaria, that's good to know. thanks. see you around, guys салаам, ми | |
| katichka | Thursday 02nd of June 2005 01:14:19 PM |

| Morrighan | Saturday 18th of June 2005 03:51:02 PM |

| You did well Dolores - You got right the plurals for сода и топче!!! давност /As I know in Bulgarian prescription is рецепта/ pl/ рецепти място (среден род ) - place pl. места New words for you friends:-) лист пара До скоро!!! | |
| dolores7 | Tuesday 21st of June 2005 12:18:30 AM |
| - Well done Monica Yes, it is true and the word давност gets a different form when changes into the plural :D ok, I’ve heard people saying лист – листи, with an exception of the noun that follows number two…два листа but I would also really appreciate someone explaining to me when you also use листове пара – пари паричка (f) – a small coin сан (m) – dignity | |
| stormgoblin | Wednesday 22nd of June 2005 12:43:31 PM |
| .....? - if you notice on the site i recently corrected on the link post, the author briefly explains the usage of numerical plurals for masculine nouns. apparently, from what i remember and understand :) its a form used for an uncountable number. the example was like много листове. its somewhat similar to russian, but only with certain words like час (time) and год. the form for russian is: 1 час, 2-4 часа, и 5+ часов. well, russian doesn't have 5 годов, but 5 лет. but its a similar idea, at least. but that's a little different from bulgarian, where every non-person masculine noun uses this form, to my understanding. here's my attempt :) at plural declension: паричка=парички, или паричките "the coins, all of the coins" сан=санове? или сановете...if i'm wrong, my other guess is something like сане. new words? глупчо(m)--little fool (diminutive) глупак(m)--regular type of fool трендафил(m)--rose see you later, me | |
| dolores7 | Wednesday 22nd of June 2005 01:34:13 PM |
| - I apologize stormgoblin. I still haven’t been through all the posts. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I’ll pay more attention to the messages next time. сан - санове is the right choice :) and two dreams is 'два сана' my plural attempt: глупчо - глупчовци глупак - глупаци трендафил - трендафили new words: тризъбец (m) – trident млин (m) – type of pastry Thanks again, dolores | |
| Morrighan | Wednesday 22nd of June 2005 08:09:43 PM |
| - тризъбец (m) - тризъбци – trident млин (m) - млинове (I think...) – type of pastry And сан - санове is correct :) As for "листове" - I think it's used when you mean "sheets of paper". When you say "листа", you mean "leaves". But yes, Stormgoblin, you're also right. In Bulgarian you say "два листа, три листа" (the stress is on the first syllable), but "много листове" or "много листи", as well, if you mean "sheets of paper", "лист" (sg.). But if you mean "leaves", "листо", you say "две листа, три листа" (The stress i on the second syllable) but "много листа". This time the form is the same. лъжа - a lie (f) лъжица - a spoon (f) лъжичка - a little spoon (f) :) | |
| moni7ro | Wednesday 22nd of June 2005 08:24:59 PM |
| Hi - лъжа - a lie (f)лъжu лъжица - a spoon (f)лъжицu лъжичка -a little spoon (f)лъжичкu My new words are : врата бреза Thank you very much /Morrighan for your explanations. Could you confirm whether the plural for соаре is соарета? Thanks, Monica | |

| Morrighan | Tuesday 05th of July 2005 07:50:45 PM |
| - Еха, браво, dolores7, този път наистина ме затрудни... :) сайбия - сайбии, може би? буля - не мисля, че тази дума се използва в множествено число, но ако има такова то сигурно е нещо като "були"? Не знам, наистина не съм чувала тези думи да се използват в мн.ч. Ти как мислиш? Нови думи: цвят - colour свят - world | |
| dolores7 | Wednesday 06th of July 2005 06:20:00 PM |
| - здравей Morrighan, точно е както казваш...'буля' се рядко използва в множествено число, ама има думата 'були' и не е много позната в мн. ч. защото е стара, турска дума. (and I really apologize Morrighan for making so many grammar mistakes...it’s quite embarrassing, but I still think it’s better to try to use Bulgarian as much as possible) цвят - цветове, ама 'two flowers' се казва 'два цвята', не ли е така? свят - светове, ама 'два свята' Нови думи: сглоб (м ) - joint мнение (ср ) - opinion, view поздрави, долорес | |
