| Read before learning Bulgarian. - First of all I'd like to start by saying that I am Bulgarian and I do speak it fluently. In my opinion Bulgarian is a fairly useless language. I've lived in the US for six years or so now and I really don't see the point of learning the language unless you really, REALLY want to. There is not much material on Bulgarian and it'll be hard to learn. Bulgarian is not a Romance or a Germanic language, which means it doesn't have a lot in common with English. Cyrillic is a huge pain in the butt. :-) The only time I ever use Bulgarian is with my mom and dad’s friends and with this guy on the bus. It’s rare to see people who speak Bulgarian, at least in Washington DC. In my opinion there’s little reason to learn it and you shouldn’t waste your time by starting to. If you want to learn a language at least learn one that can actually come in handy. I’m learning Jap right now! こんばんわ! | |

| - It's good to learn it if you actually have a reason. If your gf's bulgarian chances are you're gonna use the language. All i'm sayin' is dont learn a language that you wont use. I used to speak fluent French and Portugese but i've forgotten both languages because i didn't need or use either. | |

| well done, patriot!! - I am also Bulgarian and I also speak it fluently.I'm very proud of it and I won't hasitate to help to EVERYONE who asks so. The reason for answering is not to give a comment of such a low-inteligent person's post, but to encourage the ppl who wants to learn Bulgarian. There are many institutes artound the world who can offers you Bulgarian lessons.I can see it myself - here, in Holland, almoust every language institute offers it. Another thing - knowing Bulgarian, you'll understand easily other slavic languages like serbian, macedonian and russian. You will also find some simmilarities with the other languages, even not the slavic ones. In the end - it's always very nice to hear some of all those thousands of tourists that visit our country, trying to speak my mothertongue. I'm proud to speak it and I don't mind learning other 'less popular' languages as I'm trying to learn Dutch right now.Knowledge can never be useless. So - success to the beginners and don't hesitate to ask me whatever it is about Bulgaria!!! | |

| what is the phrase... - "Everytime you learn a new language, you learn a new world." Something like that. Bulgaria is a small country, but there are lots of interesting things about it and also many interesting people from there! I am learning it because I have some close Bulgarian friends. I also got to know their mom, who has come to visit a few times. She doesn't speak much English, but we email in Bulgarian! Everybody studies French or Spanish or Japanese or German to be practical. Sometimes it is fun to be unique. | |

| YUP! Same here... - My fiancé is Bulgarien too. She's with her parents who absolutely don't speak any foreign language at all. In about 2,5 weeks I'm gonna join them for four weeks and travel the country as well. Besides that, I think it's fun to learn a language anyway. Learning something new could never be a waste of time, imho. | |
