The Bulgarian Alphabet - ALPHABET - АЗБУКА /azbuka/ The word takes origin by the two first letters of the Glagollic alphabet, Az and Buki.

There are 30 letters of the alphabet today and Cyrillic is the only alphabet we use in Bulgaria when we write our language, so, if you`d like to understand our written word, start here, please!

А /а/ агне /lamb/
Б /b/ барабан /drum/
В /v/ верига /chain/
Г /g/ гълъб /dove/
Д /d/ дърво /tree/
Е /e/ екран /screen/
Ж /zh/ - pronounced like in Jean in French жилетка /cardigan/
З /z/ здраве /health/
И /i/ искра /sparkle/
Й /j/ This is called short i and is typical for Slavic languages, called, of course, differently. It is often found in conjunction with o, forming /yo/, like in Yorkshire. Never comes in front of the ordinary И or other vowels or semi-vowels. Never comes in front of A – to express this there is the last letter of the alphabet, or У – to express this, use the last but one letter of the alphabet. Ню Йорк /New York/, майка /mother/
К /k/ кутия /box/
Л /l/ лале /tulip/
М /m/ молив /pencil/
Н /n/ небе /sky/
О /o/ очила /glasses/
П /p/ плаж /beach/
Р /r/ розов /pink/
С /s/ сирене /cheese/
Т /t/ топка /ball/
У /u/ усни /lips/
Ф /f/ фокус /focus/
Х /h/ хляб /bread/
Ц /ts/ цвят /colour/
Ч /tsh/ - like in chair чорап /sock/
Ш /sh/ шампоан /shampoo/
Щ /sht/ This is a letter which is used to express Ш + T like in защо?/why?/
Ь – has no vocal meaning, used only in front of O to express YO after a consonant, for instance: кьопоолу /a kind of Bulgarian salad made with baked eggplants and peppers, mmm, delicious!/
Ъ /like in cut, hut, maybe a bit narrower/ ьгьл /corner/
Ю /yu/ ютия /iron, for ironing shirts for instance/
Я / ya/ ябълка /apple/

*I`ll always blacken the vocal on which the stress falls in a particular word.

- definitely a very confusing system for non-slavic learners. make sure you get this down, as it helps improve the learning curve

- Here I give my version...I hope I helped.
The Alphabet

*The Bulgarian alphabet consists of 30 letters (6 vowels and 24 consonants)
VOWELS (capitalsmall): Аа; Ъъ; Оо; Уу; Ее; Ии
CONSONANTS: all the rest ;)
* two of the consonantis are counted half-consonants these are Яя; Юю but in fact you don`t need to know this it is just for information
* there are also two helping consonants these are Йй; ь they don`t have separate sound but are used together with other letters to form specific sounds will explain this better later with some examples.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
letter(capital small) ---- pronunciation<-->example
__________________________________________________________
А а a like 'a' in 'bat' but it is clear 'a' in english 'a' comes like something 'a' + a littele of 'e' or 'ei' but in bulgarian it is clear like in Latin for example
Й й here we are to one of the special letters. as I said it has no separate sound but is used sometimes together with some vowels: its most imposratn use is with o: й+о=jo like in 'bjorg' that singer u know her...
also can form sounds with e: е+й=ei like 'ey' in 'hey'; with а and у it forms the two half consonants.
