| Colloquial Danish Lessons - Greetings fellow learners of Danish! With Ulven's permission, I've gone ahead and typed up a lesson from the book "Colloquial Danish". You can read it here. You will need Macromedia's Flash Player to view it. Please let me know if you run in to any problems. And if there are any Native speakers out there reading this, please let me know of any mistakes and corrections to make! Although it is not completely necessary, obtaining the book with the cassettes/CDs is a good idea, as the book will cover pronunciation and language points that I will be unable to cover here. Here is a link to the book on Amazon. Amazon ships worldwide: -Teknogeek | |

| - I'll try little simulation conversations based on these lessons and on the basic Danish phrases found here---> http://www.phrasebase.c../../forum/read.php?TID=3837. Everyone is welcome to do the same, of course. Or you can simply answer the questions in the exercises from the book. Incase you don't know, I'm also a beginner, so I'm still learning 'how a Dane would say' some of the things, even if the sentences may make sense in their own right. Corrections are always welcome, selvfølgeligt (of course). PÅ DANSK (in Danish) LISE: Hvordan har du det, Thomas? HANS: Godt tak, Lise. Men jeg hedder ikke Thomas.:)lol LISE: Ikke? Åh, undskyld! :)lol. HANS: Det er i orden. LISE: Havd hedder du, så? HANS: Mit navn er Hans. LISE: Åh, Hans! Ja, selvfølgeligt. Nu husker jeg. HANS: Så Lise, hvordan har du det? LISE: Jeg har det også godt, tak. PÅ ENGELSK (in English) LISE:How are you, Thomas? HANS:Well, thank you. But my name isn't Thomas, ha ha. LISE:No? Oh, sorry! ha ha. HANS:That's alright. LISE: What is your name, then? HANS: My name is Hans. LISE:Oh, Hans! Yes, of course. Now I remember. HANS:So Lisa, and you? How are you? LISE:I'm doing fine also, thank you. *As the lesson in the head post says "Jeg hedder...?" literally says "I'm called...?", whereas "Mit navn er..." literally says "My name is...". Both are used in Danish, but the casual introduction phrase is "Jeg hedder...". ----------------------------------------------------------- Just a question for myself here; Danish professionals, was I right to invert 'jeg hedder' to 'hedder jeg' due to its following 'men' (but)? --> "Men hedder jeg ikke Thomas." Also with "Nu husker jeg". Or is this only done if following 'så', 'på grund af' or other clauses that act as a previous sentence concept? :S I just confused every non-Dane, I feel :S Maybe even the Danes too.. ----------------------------------------------------------- *Note to Phrasebase: No, I didn't make Teknogeek get down on her hands and knees to beg for my royal blessing to start this thread.:)lol But I did sieze on the opportunity to abuse her courtesy, so she does now have to pay me taxes. I hope that's alright :)lol. | |

| - Here's the correct version: PÅ DANSK (in Danish) LISE: Hvordan har du det, Thomas? HANS: Godt tak, men jeg hedder ikke Thomas.:)lol LISE: Ikke? Åh, undskyld! :)lol. HANS: Det er i orden. LISE: Hvad hedder du så? HANS: Mit navn er Hans. LISE: Nå, Hans! Ja, selvfølgelig. Nu husker jeg. HANS: Så, hvordan har du det? LISE: Jeg har det også godt, tak. You shouldn't invert 'jeg hedder' to 'hedder jeg' because of the 'men'. You could invert it for a question: Hedder jeg Hans? (Am I hans?) And the way you write it: 'men hedder jeg ikke Hans?' means: 'but am I not (called) Hans?' If you use 'så' like this: Hvis det er sandt, så hedder jeg ikke Hans. Then you should invert 'jeg hedder'. That's all I can say, dunno much about this. :) | |

| Taxes? - I'm American! No taxation without representation!!! or something like that. Read my lips... no new taxes! I think there's a tax quote for every political figure in United States history. I won't bore you with them here though! :) | |

| Lessons - Hi All, Sorry for the delay in posting the Dansih lessons. I've got two jobs, and between the two of them, I've had almost no free time over the last two weeks. I hope to make up for lost time and resume posting this week. In the interim, is there anything that you've come across in the lessons posted thus far that you have any questions about? How are your studies coming along? Looking forward to your posts, Tina | |
