- good then(: its better to learn together, couse its more simple to unravel all the obscurities that can be met on our learning way(; Goedeavond!
i have a question for you or just anybody who could answer that. I know a few rules of pronouncing like g=chei (with that difficult snore sound) etc, but i discovered that st sometimes(or maybe always) becomes sh and s(like in spreek) becomes sh too, but not always...i would like to find out that 'sh' thing.when do we say s and when sh.

some help... - Hallo!

Some information about the letters G and SCH

I guess you were already at the pronunciation page?
www.phrasebase.c../../discuss/read.php?TID=1418

The g with the difficult snore-sound.
The sch is the same as the g but pronounced with an 's' on front of it. So you can think of it as
sg But it's never spelled this way

Voorbeeld: (example)

Schep (shovel) *so it is pronounced like sgep*
schaar (scissors) *sgaar*
schilderij (painting) *sgilderij*

st is not a special combination.

We have some adopted french words like Douche.

Here the combination che is pronounced as the english sh
In other languages often written as Š or Ş

But don't worry to much about words with this lettercombination, because there are quite rare in Dutch

Succes!

Pls,don't hesitate to ask me if you've questions.
Tot ziens!

- and one more question. Does the dutch language you speak in Netherlands differ a lot from the belgian dutch? Can i learn watching Belgian tv programmes( from Brussels or Antwerpen )?
lowenguardWednesday 16th of March 2005 08:27:26 PM
- Hey Qlto,

I checked the link http://www.learndutch.org/Lesson1/index.html just now.
The site tells the story of a guy who wants to open a restaurant in comic form with pictures and text balloons. After each picture they ask questions about what is happening, for you to practise and there are also ome tests you can do.
You can find audio files and translation to every sentence or vocab word. The sound file quality is not that bad actually. But my main objections about the site is that navigation isn't easy and you'll need some knowledge of Dutch to beign with. It is pretty much unusable for a beginner because they don't address the grammatical rules.
It's a nice effort though...

And second, there are little differences between Dutch and Flemish, spoken in Belgium. First the pronounciation is much smoother in Flemish, they avoid hard sounds like the 'G' (as is the case in the southern parts of Holland too). And second, I don't know much about this, but where the Dutch use derived foreign words from English and other languages like 'lift', the Belgiums have invented Dutch alternatives for it... maybe it would be fun to sum some of these up here??
But to return to your original question, you can watch Belgium tv and learn the language, no problem!!

Good luck, y'all learning Dutch!
