Ce, celui and all the variants - Hi everyone! I need help on grammar. I'm confused when to use: cela, celui, ce, cette. If there's anything I missed, please include it as well. Thanks a lot!

- Hi EmDee1B86,

Welcome to Phrasebase :)

Let me try to give you an explanation...

ce is used with masculine words.
e.g. = You're walking in the street with a friend and you see a boy, you can tell your friend : regarde CE garçon!

cet is used with words which begins with a vowel ==> CET arbre, CET avion etc.

cetteis used with feminine words => CETTE fille, CETTE maison etc.

...........................................................

e.g. = je veux acheter un nouveau micro. Celui dont tu m'as parlé me semble très bien, je crois que je vais acheter celui-là ==> I want to buy a new mic. The one you talked about seems to be a good one. i think I'll guy that one.

There's also celui-ci ==> this one.
celle = same as celui, but for feminine words
(e.g. celle dont je t'ai parlé...)

cela==> e.g. = je dois économiser de l'argent pour partir en vacance mais cela ne veut pas dire que je suis avare (I have to save money to go on holiday, but it doesn't mean ...).

I'm not sure my explanations are really understandable. If you still have problems with that kind of words, feel free to contact me. I also advise you to join our French Group :) Very interesting activites will take place for French learners. If you're interested in knowing more about the group, just read the post 'French Group, very important post, please READ'. It's located somewhere at the top of the page.

Voilà :) A bientôt!
