French game n°1 - Let's start with an easy game :) You always have to find a word which has a link with the word posted by the previous player.

e.g.:
player 1: fruits (fruit)
player 2: pomme (apple)
player 3: Eve
player 4: paradis (paradise)
player 5: mort (death / dead)
player 6: enterrement (burial) etc.

I think it'd be a good idea to write the English translation in parenthesis because some people here might be beginners.

First word: maison (house)

does anyone has a word related to 'maison'? ;)

Here are the gender of the preceeding words:

The following words are masculine: jardin, amour, mariage, ange, dieu, fromage, lait, miel

The following words are feminine: fleur, copine, église, prière, fête, eau, montagne, chèvre

LOL Mery and I posted the same word at the same time!

So:

perceuse électrique (does that work?)
MeryMonday 27th of December 2004 05:01:59 AM
- Hi Tinkerb,

I edited my post ;) No problem...
You can use the article you want, so you can say for instance: un dentiste or le dentiste, both are ok. If it was a feminine word, you'd have to use either 'la' or 'une', e.g : la langue , une langue. Le, la and les are definite articles and un, une and des are indefinite articles.

Oh perceuse electrique isn't correct here, the word you have to use needs to have a link with the previous word. Une perceuse electrique = a power drill. A dentist doesn't use that instrument... ;)

Next word: la douleur (pain) :(

J'apprends à jouer de la flûte de casserole.

- I am not sure of how to say this, I want to say "scale" as in the musical scale, I know there is "balance de musique" but I think that balance is more like a mass scale.

Madridarko, I think the word you want is échelle musicale, but I'm sure Mery will be able to confirm.

- Proteus, I'm almost convinced that 'flûte de casserole' doesn't exist... but I can't find the French translation of a panflute. I'll ask around...

Same for 'music scale', but I think Tinkerb is right. Echelle de musique is probably the good translation. 'Balance de musique' is definitely wrong.

Proteus, avant je jouais du piano mais c'était difficile.

- I've got an idea, each time someone will post a word, I'll give you at least one expression which contains that word. It'll give you more vocabulary.

For example: tinkerb posted the word lapin. Here's a few expressions including that word.

le coup du lapin = rabbit punch
c'est un chaud lapin :p = he's a randy devil
poser un lapin à quelqu'un= to stand sb up (a very frequent expression in French!!! ;))

My word is la cuisse (= thigh /for humans/, leg /for animals/)

2 frequent expressions:
il se croit sorti de la cuisse de Jupiter = he thinks he's God's gift to mankind
elle a la cuisse légère lol = she's generous with her favours.

does anyone have a word related to 'cuisse'?

- Neil, I'd have written le Moyen Age, no need to write a hyphen and a 's'.
I can't find an expression with Moyen Age. I'll think about it.

Tinkerb, ooooh :| you forgot our little rule ;) two vowels can't follow one another... l'agneau
doux comme une agneau = meek and mild

The second word is ok :)

My word: une épée (a sword)
l'épée de Damoclès = the sword of Damocles
