How to pronounce... - Hi,

I'm a begginer student of German and I've some doubts
regarding correct pronounciation.

Could you help me?

How to pronounce the o-umlaut? ö
z.B.
I have spoken the ö of hören as the o of Wo,
but I think it's plain wrong...
Is "ö" an intermediate sound between "o" and "e"?
How to distinguish o, ö and oh?

Another one:
For me, it seems that the word "Ihr" sounds like "Iia"
with the "a" as a weak, vanishing sound like the "e" in
Tasse. Is that true?

Thanks!

and ü.

how to pronounce... - Hi there,

the difference between o, ö and oh ... I will try...

o - like the "o" in OHHH (as opposed to the "o" in ONLY, as it has a slight "u" after pronouncing the "o")

ö - sounds a bit like the "o" in WORLD or WORD or the expression uhhhh whereby you stretch your lips as you would do when trying to kiss somebody (sounds awkward, i know, but I couldn't explain it any better)

oh - you would pronounce this like the usual german "o", but then you would have to add a few H as in "OHHHHH"

Now, you are right about the "Ihr" - you wouldn't hear the "r" at all and the description "with the "a" as a weak, vanishing sound like the "e" in Tasse" is absolutely correct.

take care.
