Note: For pronunciation, the "r" has a slight roll to it, like in spanish. You roll or thrill the "r's". The pronunciations you see here are in Connemara dialect. Basic Conversation: Slán /SLAWN/ = Goodbye Slán go fóill /SLAWN GUH FOY/ = Goodbye for now Chífidh mé tú /SHIH-FEH MAY TOO/(U) = I´ll see you Buíochas le Dia /BWEE-HUS LEH DEE-AH/ = Thank God Basic Phrases: Tá sé /TAW SHAY/ = It is Níl sé /NEEL SHAY/ = It is not fuar /FOO-UHR/ = cold te /CHEH/ = hot, warm fliuch /FLUH/ = wet tirim /TEE-RIM/ = dry dorcha /DOR-HUH/ = dark geal /GYAL/ = bright an lá /UN LAW/ = the day an aimsir /UN AM-SHUR/ = the weather an oíche /UN EE-HYEH/ = the night an mhaidin /UN WAH-DYEN/ = the morning go breá /GUH BRAH/ = fine go deas /GUH JASS/ = nice go maith /GUH MUH/ = good go dona /GUH DONNA/ = bad go hálainn /GUH HAW-LIN/ = beautiful go hiontach /GUH HEEN-TUH/ = wonderful anois /UH-NISH/ = now inniu /IN-YOU/ = today anseo /UN SHUH/ = here ansin /UN SHIN/ = there To ask a questions, "tá" becomes "an bhfuil" pronounced /UN WILL/. An example would be: An bhfuil an fear ansin? = Is the man there? Note: The article "an" means "the" and there is no word for "a" as in "a man". To say "a man" you would just use the noun for man (fear). So, to recap read and translate 5 these phrases: 1. Tá an aimsir go dona. 2. Níl an lá go maith. 3. Tá an oíche go breá. 4. An bhfuil an aimsir go deas? 5. Tá sé go hálainn anois, buíochas le Dia. There is more to come... Just you wait. P.S. Tá mé ag foghlaim fós, so feel free to correct me or add to this... | |
