| IRISH 09 (Ceacht 9) - Reminder: Because of the various dialects in Irish, most of my posts will be in Ulster (U) and Connacht (C), which will be distinguished with the appropriate letters. Also Remember: For pronunciation, the "r" has a slight roll to it, like in spanish. You roll or thrill the "r's". Click here to see a list of all PHRASE lessons. Prepositional Pronouns Simple prepositions (eg. ar, ag) combined with personal pronouns (mé, tú, etc.) are known as prepositional pronouns. Here are the most commonly used: Ag (at): Nouns followed by ag remain unchanged. Eg. Bhí sé fuar aréir = It was cold yesterday mé = agam tú = agat sé = aige sí = aici muid = againn sibh = agaibh siad = acu Ar (on, etc.): Ar does not affect the following nouns beginning with a vowel, but it adds a séimhiu to nouns beginning with a consonant in most cases. Eg. D'iarr mé síob ar Phóilín. mé = orm tú = ort sé = air sí = uirthi muid = orainn sibh = oraibh siad = orthu As (from): As doesn't change nouns beginning with a consonant or a vowel. Eg. As Doire mé = I am from Derry mé = asam tú = asat sé = as sí = aisti muid = asainn sibh = asaibh siad = astu Chuig (to): The word chuig is used instead of "go" or "go dtí" when you're talking about going to an event or to see a person; it doesn't affect nouns that follow. Eg. Chuaigh Nóra chuig ceolchoirm mé = chugam tú = chugat sé = chuige sí = chuici muid = chugainn sibh = chugaibh siad = chucu Do (to/for): Do adds a séimhiú to words beginning with a consonant (except l, n, or r). Eg. Thug mé bronntanas do Shéamus mé = domh tú = duit sé = dó sí = di muid = dúinn sibh = daoibh siad = dóibh Le (with): Nouns beginning with a consonant remain unchanged after le, but it adds h to nouns beginning with a vowel. Eg. Tá mé ag dul Corcaigh le Dónall = I am going to Cork with Dónall mé = liom tú = leat sé = leis sí = léi muid = linn sibh = libh siad = leo Ó (from): The preposition ó adds a séimhiú to nouns beginning with a consonant (except l, n, or r). Eg. trasna ó theach Bhríd mé = uaim tú = uait sé = uaidh sí = uaithi muid = uainn sibh = uaibh siad = uathu Other Prepositions Go (to): Nouns beginning with a consonant remain unchanged after go. Eg. go Béal Fairste = to Belfast Go dtí (to): This is used instead of "go" before nouns that are preceded by the article, and doesn't affect them in any way. Eg. go dtí an Fhrainc = to France I/In (in): I is used before nouns beginning with a consonant and adds an urú to all consonants except l, m, n, r, and s. Eg. i dteach Liam = in Liam's house In is used before vowels and doesn't cause any change. Eg. Rugadh in Albain mé = I was born in Scotland Prepositions with the Singular Article Certain prepositions change when they are used with the article (an). do + an = don (to the/for the) i + an = sa (in the) (used before a consonant) in + an = san (in the) (used before a vowel) le + an = leis an (with the) ó + an = ón (from the) P.S. Tá mé ag foghlaim fós, so feel free to correct me or add to this... | |
