New word game - Konnichiwa(Hello),

This is a word association game :)
Please post the word that pops into your mind
after reading the previous word!
We maybe can find some funny ideas or great thinking ;)

The word order is:
(English)...(Roma-ji)...(kanji)..(hiragana/katakana)
(*you don't have to write in Kanji, Hiragana or Katakana
if you don't know ;))

For example,

1. Japan = nihon = 日本 = にほん
nihon >>>
cherry blossom = sakura = 桜 = さくら

2. sakura >>>
March = san gatsu = 三月 = さんがつ

3.san gatsu >>>
graduation = sotsugyou = 卒業 = そつぎょう

We graduate from school on March in Japan.
I remember the scene of a flurry of falling cherry blossoms.
It was so beautiful but made us a bit sad.

what word pop into your mind to see sotsugyou(graduation)?

scizo,

This is a word association game what you associate with the previous word.
I associate 'Japan' with 'Sakura'(cherry blossom),
the word 'Sakura' is associated with 'sotsugyou'(graduation)...well, at least for me...

Bennylin associated 'Sotsugyou'(graduation) with 'work' ;)

Thank you for the post, bennylin!

As I talked about ice cream, you use this Kanji

melt = tokeru = とける = 溶ける

here are some example:

塩(しお)や砂糖(さとう)は水(みず)にける
= Salt and sugar are soluble in water

氷(こおり)はセ氏(せし) 0 度(ど)で溶(と)ける
= Ice melts at zero degrees Celsius.

合(かくゆうごう)... (ゆう or と(ける))
= nuclear fusion

(と)ける問題(もんだい)
= a solvable problem

The Kanji 熔(と)ける is used in the case that metal melt.

- Konnichiwa makoto-san, soshite mina-san!
(Hello makoto and everyone!)

'health' = 'genki', this is correct in a sense.

I would suggest another way of saying for Japanese learners
because the word 'health' is rather used as 'kenkou'
in Japanese :) It depends on the situation so I let you
know some example:

Kenkou wa tomi ni masaru.
(Health is better than wealth)

Kare wa totemo kenkou desu.
(He is in good health.)
>>> in this case, you can also say like
"Kare wa totemo genki desu."

Normally 'genki' express like 'high-spirited', 'cheer',
'vigor', 'fine', 'spry' and so on...

A: o genki desu ka?(how are you?)
B: Hai, genki desu.(Yes, I'm fine thank you.)

A: genki wo dashite!(Cheer you up!)
B: arigatou(Thank you)

Thank you for the post.
When I notice something like this, I'd like to add
explanations if you don't mind ;)

But since thats more a phrase than a word:

Ai- love
suki- like/love

Can someone please tell me what akari means?
Monday 24th of January 2005 01:54:05 AM
- 1)
akari == a light.lamplight, light (in general), brightness.
2)
In Japanese language "I like this thing" or "I like (love) someone" is :
(A)wa (B)ga suki desu.== (A) likes/loves (B).

"watashi wa ringo ga suki desu."
We translate: "I like apples". This is the most convenient tranlation. But analysing the struture, literally is:

"concerning me, apples are likeable".
ringo:apples (noun)
suki: likeable (adjective).
desu: present tense "to be" (formal).

so, "suki" is a "na" adjetive. then, sukina is correct.
when we use "na" adjetives and there's no noun after it, then "na" is removed.

Tatoeba:
(sukina ringo)wa akai desu.
The likeable apple is red.

watashi wa ringo ga (suki) desu.
I like apples. (Literally: concerning me, apples are likeable ).

- 1)akari == a light. lamplight, light (in general), brightness.
2)
"I like/love (someone/something)" structure is:
(A) likes/loves (B) == (A)wa (B)ga suki desu.
Tatoeba:

I like apples == watashi wa ringo ga suki desu.
But literally , the tranlastion is:
Concerning me, apples are likeable".
so, suki is an adjective. It's a "na" adjective. then "sukina" is correct.

When we use a "na" adjective and there no noun after it, then "na" is removed:

One small thing that you need to know... the particle "wa" uses the hiragana は (ha). Also, you may see the particle "wo" written as just "o", but it uses the hiragana を (wo), and the particle "e" uses the hiragana へ (he).

(Good job! Keep it up, maraja!)

at the first stage, I thought it's easy to study in Romaji,
so I write "watashi wa", "anata wa",...but it seems like
you'd like to go to the next step :)

kuzzywuzzy-san is right,
は pronounce 'wa' and also 'ha',

after noun or noun clause, は is pronounced 'wa'

いしゃ きらい です。
(haisha wa kirai desu)
I hate a dentist.

You see the first letter は is pronounced 'ha' but the
next は(this is after the noun はいしゃ(dentist)) is pronounced 'wa'.

about を(wo/o) and お(o):
The pronunciation is both 'o' but を is for the object.

(わたしは)お菓子を 買いたい
(okashi wo kaitai)
I want to buy candy.

watashi ha = subject (you can omit the subject)
okashi wo = object
kaitai = verb

を never set to the first letter of a word.

へ can pronounce 'he' and also 'e', the rule is same as は

after noun or noun clause, へ is pronounced 'e',
if へ is in the first letter, it pronounce 'he'.
