Spelling - Because there are many ways to transcribe Sanskrit phonetically, here is a compilation of notations used in various textbooks:

* The retroflex d:
-When comes first in the word is pronounced as 'd' as in 'dug'
-When in the middle or the end of the word it is pronounced like 'r' as in 'rug'
[b]Velar[/b] can also be called guttural and the sound comes from the throat.
[b]Palatal[/b] means pronounced by tongue touching the upper palate.
[b]Retroflex[/b] means the tongue is curled to touch the top of the mouth.
[b]Sibilant[/b] means 'hissing'.
