Finally! I got the book! - Hello,

I am sorry for my long inactivity -- I was very busy preparing for a conference and then being there. But now I am back home and ready to continue my studies of languages.

Incidentally, I was driving for six hours from the conference with our Chinese student, and we spent these six hour talking about Chinese language and history.

And now, to the main topic -- today I received "Lillebror och Karlsson på taket" -- directly from Stockholm! To buy anything in Swedish language is impossible from an American book retailer, even as big as Amazon :-( Now I am very happy to have a relatively simple text in Swedish to work on and I'll be posting my comments and questions about "Lillebror" in this discuss.

First two pages - These are some of the questions and observations from the first two incomplete pages of "Karlsson".

"Jag är inte alls nån vanlig Lillebror"
Is this translated approximately as "I am not all that ordinary Little Brother"? I am chiefly interested in the combination of words "alls nån".

"Har är visst vanlig"
Why is "visst" "visst", not "viss"?

What is "otvättade öron"?
I understand what this probably means -- large flappy ears? ;-)

"... så han är alldeles vanligt han också"
Why is "han" repeated twice here?

"Han är mycket liten and mycket trind och säker herre ..."
How is "säker herre" translated?

More to follow.

- I'll try to help you...

"Jag är inte alls nån vanlig Lillebror"
Is this translated approximately as "I am not all that ordinary Little Brother"? I am chiefly interested in the combination of words "alls nån".

-----"Alls nån" is slang for alls någon.

What is "otvättade öron"?
I understand what this probably means -- large flappy ears? ;-)

----"otvättade öron" is unwashed ears.

"... så han är alldeles vanligt han också"
Why is "han" repeated twice here?

----I think "han" is repeted because it's the way you usually make the sentence "easier" when you speak. You shouldn't write like this, but this book is made for kids.

"Han är mycket liten and mycket trind och säker herre ..."
How is "säker herre" translated?

----Maybe the mean something like selfasure or confident.

Hope this helps!

I woul say it's like:
I'm not at all an ordinary Little Brother
"Har är visst vanlig"
Why is "visst" "visst", not "viss"?
visst is more like appearently while viss is more like certain. Get it? i don't lol

I means that you have unwashed ears. Like having dirt behinds you ears. Probobly some metaphore for being experienced and having seen much and being rather rough. I'm not sure.

as stated earlier this is more like spoken swedish.

- Arteum, where did you get this book? I too would like it! :-) Although right now my Swedish is still poor, I hope to one day be able to read at least some of it!

Perhaps you can also post the ISBN number?

Thanks!

- Alas, it is impossible to buy literature in Swedish language in the United States. I bought the book from the Swedish website http://www.akademibokhandeln.se/db/caweb/cc_start.abg.
The delivery took just over a week.

I will contuinue posting expressions from and questions about Karlsson in the near future.
