I want to learn Tamil - Hi I am trying to learn Tamil. I live in Portland, OR and there are no classes for non-heritage adults. I have a book "An intensive course in tamil" by a language institute in Mysore. i am learning online through the U of Pennsylvania's online site. The main stumbling block right now is learning the script which is the requisite for any learning in my book or online. Anyone have good suggestions?

Also if there is anyone in portland who wants to teach, there is a small onclave of Carnatic music students who'd be interested. I plan on visiting Tamil Nadu next year for these purposes.

Can anyone recommend a good cd or cassette to listen to in transit or at work?

What can I learn here? It seems like right now the Tamil section is quite undeveloped.

Thanks! Todd

I want to learnTamil - I can teach you Tamil from basics in English script. I think your text is too advanced for a beginer.
The learning of the script of Tamil Language can be Taught seperately with the phrases or little later after U begin to understand Spoken Tamil. This web can provide info of
vidios and cassettes.I must Know you first to guide you through.

- Thanks for your offer! I have picked up much of the script and can transliterate it slowly, though anything you can do in the roman alphabet would be awesome too. Right now I am working on basics like conjugations and the like. The biggest trouble for me is phonology. I can look at stuff on the web, but there are things I won't know unless i hear it (like how the glides get filled in on the end of the words for certain vowels? When something is a d or a t, or a dh or a th [i imagine that corresponds to certain vowels]?). You mentioned video and audio resources, that would be great. Were do we begin?
