Learning Thamizh - vanakkam to all!
i would greatly appreciate the help of any fellow thamizhan in learning and improving my grasp of thamizh, which, i am really sad to say, is fast becoming a dead language in the south african tamil community. it hasn't been spoken as a first language for at least 2-3 generations now, and many young children have never even heard a thamizh conversation in their lives. this has much to do with the fact that english is a convenient and widely understood lingua franca used among all SA's many cultural and ethnic groups, and the way thamizh is taught in schools is in a stilted literary way, not as a natural or colloquial language (for eg, i recall being able to count and list vegetables and months of the year after four years of thamizh pAdasAlai, but was incapable of stringing a simple sentence together!)

i am determined to revive the speaking of thamizh in my country, even if it has to start with me and my own family - and i hope some of our learned members may be able to help me to this end.

many thanks.
