Osmanlı - Merhaba.

Just a quick question: I know the Alphabet as it is almost the same as Urdu, only, when you write it do you include all the vowels (ا، ع، و، ه، ي ) (For those without Arabic support it is: Alif, Ain, Vow, He, Ye; or are diactrics used?

Also please correct me if I've got incorrect information.

Teşekkür ederim

i once attempted to learn how to read texts written in ottoman but it resulted in failure :shame: ;)

as far as i know, there are some exceptions with the pronounciation of the letters. for instance the arabic letter "kef" is sometimes used for the "n" sound. and there are extra letters for the sounds that dont exist in arabic such as ch, p, etc...for ch, three dots are added underneath the B letter of arabic for instance. another turkish member has left a link for the ottoman form. i believe it will help you alot.

- I can say that if you know Persian, Arabic (and to some extent, Azeri, which in many ways more closely resembles Ottoman Turkish than Turkish itself) reading Ottoman Turkish will come a lot easier. Ottoman Turkish spelling is historical rather than phonetic; Arabic and Persian words are spelled more or less as they are in those languages (but often pronounced differently - تلفظ talaffoz = Turkish telaffüz) and native Turkish words are spelled according to an older pronunciation, much of which is still preserved in Azeri.
