great topic :)

just a minor correction if you don't mind :)

absent = gayab = غايب
actually = fee al hakeeka = في الحقيقة
again = mara okra = مرة أخرى
(the word again that you wrote hamid is correct but it's from a dialect not the standard arabic :) )

cheers,
Remy :)

hehe i thought i had made "actually". it's strange though. my arabic book is mostly arabic and written by 2 arabs and they made a mistake? :s oh well. i'll ask you if everything is correct as i go on :p btw did you finish aldars alarba3?

Well it is possible for someone to have a typo in any book. For instance, my Persian phrasebook is FULL of errors. (I don't recomend that anyone buy anything from Lonely Planet because of this major incosistency) In the index it will have a word transliterated one way and in the actual grouped sections of the book another. For example, it lists 'bus' as otobus (the literary version) utubus (the colloquial version) AND as otubus (a nonexistant pronunciation) yet it never tells you which of these is which. I know which is which because of my studies.
Also remy I think it would be best to write haqeeqa instead of hakeeka so as to not confuse people with ق and ك

hehe it's ok, i just checked in my book's glossary and i apparently confused the english translations. for some reason i saw "upset" but i was thinking "absent" when i saw z3alaan :s but if i do see something that's incorrect or unfamiliar i can always ask some of my friends from the middle east.

and i'll be sure not to mix up those letters. sometimes it gets confusing for me too when i see it lol

Hi: Salam all,

I'm new here but please allow me to correct some errors/typos:

حاجة doesn't mean 'important' ( important would be: مُهِم ), it means 'need n.'. For example: حاجة مُلِحّة Hajah mulihha means urgent/demanding need.

And بحاجة usually is followed by Haarf حرف , such as: بحاجة لـ ، بحاجة إلى . The Ba'a attached before حاجة is also a Haarf which basically means 'in'

Here're some more examples for حاجة and بحاجة :

الحاجة أُم الاختراع
تطوير تقنيات التعليم أصبح حاجة مُلِحَة في هذا العصر
العبد المؤمن يُسارع في قضاء حوائج الناس*
أنا في حاجة إلى مزيد من الأمثلة
أنا بحاجة إلى مزيد من الأمثلة
أنا بحاجة لمزيد من الأمثلة
أنا بحاجة لمساعدتكم

*note:
حَوائجُ Hawa'ej and حاجاتHajat both are plural forms of حاجة

Here's the correction for the typos:
التاريخ _______ التريخ
حِصان _______ أحسان
يشعُر _______ يشعور

Salam and Good luck
بالتوفيق

greetings to Hamid: excuse me hamid for the interfere, but I felt I have to "correct" some incidental mistakes. And it, if you dont mind, happens and there is always a way for mistakes to occur for everyone of us. I'm Arab and I'm a teacher and sure of what I'm about to say.
Concerning section "B" of your "dictionary" this reply will be.
Back in Arabic is: مؤخّر and not دبر (mo'ekhar). "Dobr" is "the anus".
The plural of "basket" is: "سلال" and not "سلات", (silal).
You don't say "غرفة النوم", you should say "غرفة نوم" for bedroom, 'cause "الـ" means "the"; the definite article.
Bird is: "طير" and not "عصفور", (Tayr).
By is: "بـ" and not "بأن", (pronounced: bee)

Thank you for the chance to participate in transferring my "own" language. Good luck all.

Hi again, and again...
Here are some notices to sections "D, E, F, G, and H":
D/
*to die is: يموت (yemoot) and not يمات which is no such a word in Arabic.
*most difficult is: الاصعب (al as'ab), but "more difficult" is (اصعب).
*dig is: يحفر (yeHfer), and drill is: يثقب (yethQib), and not حدف , there is no such a word in Arabic, !excuse me!
*the word كلاب means "gods" is pronounced (kilaab) and not (kalaab), alike you have many others!!
*drive is: يسوق (yesooQ) and not يسوك.
*during is خلال (KHilaal), but "(during all) day" e.g. means طوال .

E/
*ear is: أذن (Uthun),th like in "then", the plural is آذان (aathan), and not سمع because سمع (sam') means (hearing, n.) and (sama'a) is a past verb "heard".
*most expensive is: الأغلى (al aGHla, and more expensive is أغلى (aGHla).

F/
*feel is: a verb يشعر (yesh'ur) the "u" is short just like in "put", and not يشعور , excuse me from where you've brought this "Arabic" word?!

G/
*go is: يذهب (yeth'heb) "th" is just like in (then), and not يروح this is a "slang word" and not proper.
*good is: جيد (jay'yid) the (i) is like in (lid), more common than حسن.

H/
*happen is: يحدث (yeHduth) short (u) and (th) is like in (thing), or يحصل.
*hear is: يسمع (yes'ma') more than يستمع which means "listen".
*history is: تاريخ (tareeKH) and not التريخ no such a word in "my dictionary". **Remember, DO NOT use (ال) unless you have (the) or a name is very common and well-known, e.g. (الشمس) "the Sun".
*horse is: حصان (HiSaan) and not (احسان) which means (vavor) or (charity).

much thank.
For any point or question, my email is: jay.michael3@yahoo.com

thanks for the corrections. my dictionary was written by a lebanese man. but i guess there is a slight difference between what may and may not be right between different areas.

for example, i've seen "bedroom" written as غرقة النوم but many people just say غرقة نوم =s it's wierd

Hi: Hello Hamid,
This is not "wierd" it is just a matter of "simple" mistakes some dictionaries don't consider. When you say, in English, 'bedroom' it means 'any bedroom'. But when you say 'THE bedroom' it means 'the specified, known, bedroom'. Like this is the arabic definition article.

hi: I can't see what's the big deal, whether it's written as غرفة النوم or غرفة نوم , as long as it was not used in a sentence. Well there were bigger mistakes which were corrected by jaymichael. But I guess that's what distinguishes Arabic teachers from normal Arab speakers XD

مرحبا أخ حميد، كيف حالك؟ أنا بخير والحمد لله.

I could not log in recently (well, because of problems with the website) and my username was changed, even my previous postings are now under other user's account. I'm realy confused now! I hope they will fix it soon.

Last time I asked you what does your signature mean ( and I think that the grammer is all mixed up in it )
الوجوه السعيد سيبقى معايا حتى اليوم عندما انا النوم الازلى
Is it a lyric or a poem?

ِAhlan Wavescupltor,
These numbers are used to transliterate some Arabic Alphabets which have no phonetic equivalent in English.

2 ء
3 ع
3' غ
6 ط
6' ظ
7 ح
7' خ
9 ص
9' ض

If you use your imagination a little you can see some resemblance.

Is it a lyric or a poem?oh i'm sorry. i must've missed that part.
it's words from a Japanese song called "My Will". i just translated it to Arabic a bit lol i guess the grammar is a bit wierd. but it was the best way i could figure at the time lol
The happy face will remain with me until the day when I sleep eternally

and that's cool about learning nihongo. watashi mo i've wanted to learn it for a while. i started picking up words and phrases as i've watch alot of cartoons and movies for a few years lol.

LoL most songs when traslated to other languages seems weird, but what you did was something else :P
If I was to translate it back to English it would be someting like:
"The happy FACES will remain with me untill TODAY when I AM THE ETERNAL SLEEPING"
Even if I try to translate what you wrote in English to Arabic, it will be wierd too:
الوجه السعيد سيلازمني حتى اليوم الذي أنام فيه نوماً أبدياً
Maybe you should just learn Japanese. It would be cool to see you sometime in the Japanese forum.
