Arabic Game: Hi everyone,
I thought this might be fun, and we can learn from it at the same time. I am doing this type of game in another group, but it is all in English, but I was thinking maybe we could do it in Arabic.
Directions for the Game: I will choose a random Arabic word and send it to the first person who agrees to participate in this game. This person will recieve this secret Arabic word by email and will have to come onto this forum and give the other participants hints. The hints given by the "clue-giver" can be in English, but all of the guesses MUST be in arabic (either arabic script or arabic written in English lettering).

Let me know if this is corny and I can stop, but if there are no objections, I will be more than happy to email the secret Arabic Word to the first responder.

Another thing... who ever guesses the word correctly, will recieve the next secret word.

Let me know if this would be a good idea or not. Thanks for at least considering it.

~Hanen~

If I'm not mistaken [high possibilities for me to be]
[size=7]زجاج
means glass.
This is not the word, but this thing is made of it (most of the times!).
Is it hot inside? Open it! :)

Hi guys, here you go:

Virtually everyone (well, at least the speakers of European languages) know the secret word even without speaking Arabic because many languages borrowed it. It is one of the most important primary commodities*) in the world - only petroleum dwarfs it in terms of the value traded.

I could be more specific, but I don't want to - I am curious to know whether you are aware of the Arabic roots of many words you know from your mother tongues.

Good luck!

Jana

*) In case you are not familiar with the concept of primary sector, please refer to this definition: http://www.answers.com/topic/primary-sector-of-industry

The New Clue

the new word refers to a public establishment that provides something to meet a need and where ppl can pay for a roof over one's head and a specified kind of nourishment.

am not sure about the oorigin of this word but i guess arabic borrowed it from persian.

Good luck

ilios
Thursday 10th of November 2005 02:31:08 PM
palomita: coffe is related to oil[petrol] just in terms of the value-traded ;)

palomita
Thursday 10th of November 2005 03:14:52 PM
thanks...: ilios: yes, you are right about the value, but as here all claim that words have to be from arabic "roots", so that was my mistake not to look to this in a wider position:p

Ok guys, here you go. Got the word now I'm going to give you one hint, maybe next day another one (not to make it too simple)

It's an adjective and it is connected with one of the elements (you know the environmental ones) and the environment. And if a thing is desciribed with this adjective, it makes life a lot easier. Hehehe.. Have a try ;)

ilios
Friday 11th of November 2005 08:23:46 PM

Jana
Friday 11th of November 2005 08:58:48 PM
Hana,

Do you mean chemical elements? The term "environmental elements" leaves me in a quandary. Is it related to chemistry or ecology?

So far, my guess would be something revolving around hydrogen, but that is probably nonsense:-)

Jana

ilios
Friday 11th of November 2005 09:20:47 PM
leader قائد

if lead is considered as a chemical element aka environmental element.

Hana
Friday 11th of November 2005 09:49:17 PM
Lol.. Nice guesses. You know the basic elements of the world? Eg. fire is one of them (but this word is not connected with fire at all, it is another element).

ilios
Friday 11th of November 2005 10:16:23 PM
the basic elements of the world....
the universe substances?:D..earth,air,fire and water..

welcome back mohamed :)

my guess is ma'a - water

Jana
Saturday 12th of November 2005 01:54:33 AM
Hana, you stretched my imagination to the utmost limit. My guess is "clean", which can be translated in more ways, but I am most familiar with نظيف, naZeef.

Of course, the connection to environment would be water.

Ufff....

Jana

Hana
Saturday 12th of November 2005 02:16:08 AM

It's great fun to watch you all guessing. Yes it is connected with the universe substances (also called elements). And yes the substance I meant is ماء. (ma'a)

It's not جميل and it's not نظيف.
So another hint:
A watch can be described by means of this adjective. But it does not mean that all watches are like that (I suppose you will guess after this hint).

:D :D

hamid18
Saturday 12th of November 2005 11:30:38 AM
نور (light)

you use the sunlight to make special watch/clock called a "sun dial". so this is my guess lol

running منافسة

water runs and there are running watches.

Hanen
Sunday 13th of November 2005 12:43:14 AM
HEHEHE: Hana you did great and everyone else did amazingly well at guessing. Now those who do not know arabic will know the many different ways of saying "waterproof".

The word I sent to Hana was: مسيكة

I hope that is right... maybe I am wrong (if I am please correct me, I don't want to be straying anyone in the wrong direction) :]

Since Ilios has already had a chance to be a clue-giver and Palomita is so fired up to get a word, I will send her the next word.

I hope you are all ready.

This is the way to say "Please wait for her" to a lot of people :

My question now : where did you being the word MASEEKAH " مسيكة " from ? :s I've never heared about this word ...

Hanen

ilios
Sunday 13th of November 2005 02:38:51 PM
Saba7 el 5yr

مسيكة was a typo..
Hanen wanted to write مسبكة
is an adjective modifying the pipes thats been installed and repaired by the Plumber السباك
or السمكري * el7itta di bel masri*:D

and all is about a waterproof ;)

Hana
Sunday 13th of November 2005 04:44:20 PM

Hi guys: Hello to all,
First of all, i am sorry that I am writing so late...studies :( but as i got the word from Hanen, prepared you some clues;)
Hope it very easy:)
Good luck;)
Palo

So here it is:
The activity which is as old as in this earth human being exists. It was and is common in all over the world, for example, in Europe it appeared 10-15 thousand years B.C. (Before Christ) In Africa even earlier. In our days it is more for the pleasure, leisure time....for some people singing, playing basketball is their leisure time- for others .....this action. Oh yes, forgot to tell...this is a common action to all alive creatures. More or less all of them are doing this for one or another reason....it is designed by nature....

ilios
Thursday 17th of November 2005 01:09:07 PM
labas palomita
is it a kind of sport?

running ركض , جري , عدو

palomita
Thursday 17th of November 2005 01:27:48 PM
Labas ilios:): Hello,
Thank you for your nice guess, but no:)
think a little- people start to run earlier than 15-10 thousand years B.C. (in Europe, as I meantioned, in Africa earlier).
In our days some "higher position" people call it a kind of sport, but not the main purpose of this action. Some of them doing it of the main reason. (Well, I am talking from european position) .;)
Do all alive creatures can run?:) I don't think so :p
Try again :)
;)

ilios
Thursday 17th of November 2005 02:17:16 PM
no..not all alive creatures can run [literaly]..

its a relative thing though.
*turtles' runing is crawling to the hare*
*snakes can run too fast though they have no feet*
that was my point:p

ill think about it in a bit wider position than an african position:p

palomita
Thursday 17th of November 2005 02:54:54 PM

then run run :)

palomita
Thursday 17th of November 2005 03:25:15 PM
try again...: well,i think i gave enough keys, it is not so difficult:p
just try to remember how do people lived from long time ago;)
That action in our days some times (not all the time) are accompanied by sound;)
:p

hamid18
Thursday 17th of November 2005 11:10:57 PM
i think the word is السباحة (swimming). it's a sport, but you can also swim just to have fun or relax, and every creature can do this at least once in it's lifetime...especially when they are just sperm (ick! biology lol)

remy
Friday 18th of November 2005 12:10:21 AM
wow this is really cracking my brains =s i wonder what it is =s المشي (walking) all creatures do it and well reptials crawl which is considered their way of walking and fishes swim which is considered their type of walking :D

well i was thinking about الاكل (eating) i eat for the joy of it i always make sure i enjoy my meal :p and well in christmas we all eat special meals to enjoy it *drools while remembering christmas cake and stuffed turkey* and yip all creatures eat :p

Dr__Zoidberg
Friday 18th of November 2005 10:27:51 AM
Is it maybe رقص? (dance)

If by all living creatures you include plants, mushrooms bacteria etc. I doubt my answer is right.

palomita
Friday 18th of November 2005 01:04:54 PM
Shukran jazylan :))): Salam to all, well really nice guesses, but no!!!:p
ok, one more clue...as I mentioned - people are doing this, also animals are doing this.
If to talk about people, so to add variety to that action, they may "invite" to help them some kind of animals, even birds.
Come on guys, it is so easy as 2X2=4:));)
Good luck,
will be waiting for your answers:)

Jana

ِAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah: to hunt, اصطاد

ينا

palomita
Friday 18th of November 2005 01:49:04 PM
BINGO!: Congrats Jana!
well, the action is "hunting". I will give many words:)
اِصْطادَ , قَنَصَ - pursue and kill wild animals for sport or food; بَحْثٌ عَنْ , تَفْتِيش , تَنْقِيب- a search for something or someone.
I think have to explain. Why I told in Europe before 15-10 thousand years B.C. in Africa earlier, cause In Europe first people appeared at that moment. as we all know first people appeared in africa (scientist say this), so for survival they had to pick berries, roots..., hunt and fishing. For sure it was in process.
In our days usually men, hunting for pleasure, with dogs, hawks,...or just shoot, that's why with sound. All alive creatures hunt for the meal - shark hunts another fish, cat hunts for the mice:)and so on...men even hunting women:p
Anyway, it was nice, thanks Hanen, for this chance:)

ilios
Friday 18th of November 2005 02:31:02 PM
id say its hunting but *sigh*

be quick or be ..... not quick :p
Hamid..Biology huh. lol

Great Job Jana: Dr. Zoidberg welcome to the forum, glad you could join us. THank you everyone for throwing all of your guesses out here!! YAY!! NOw, about giving Jana the next word, she has already been a "clue-giver" and I would like everyone to have a chance to try it. I would love to give Jana the word when everyone has had a chance to play. It will probably be sent to Vartanm, if he agrees to play, but if not then I will send a word to Remy, Hamid18, _sama_, ouiji, safinaz, mohamed_am83, or Dr. Zoidberg!! :)

Thanks to everyone again for participating lol

Re: Arabic Game: My first post was for the natural resources guess.
For this I'd say there are many possibilities, I'll start with:
" رأس السنة "
again I will not explain that would be silly.
And Btw, the expression " عيد ميلاد " means birthday, while the expression " عيد الميلاد " would mean christmas, it literatly means : The birthday, as the one and only birthday lol, so it qualifies well to the riddle.

Great! see I told you it was easy :D.
it is the word "كتاب" (ketaab) derives from the source word "كتابة" (ketaba) meaning "writing" this indicates an interesting difference between arabic and english language, for in arabic word often derive from sources, so a huge amount of words derive in fact from one origin, while in english book and writing have different origins, they come from the same word in arabic.
Books="كتب" (koutoub) this word may seem to certain people identical to the verb : "كتب" (kataba) it is the verb to write, you see it is pronounced differently because in arabic it should have aditionnal signs to indicate the way it is read.
Other words deriving from "كتابة":
-"كاتب "(kateb):writer (male)
-"كاتبة " (kateba):writer (female)
P.S.: note that the voyels that appear in reading and that are not written in here are considered like short voyels (almost cut).
I don't think I am supposed to explain so much, but I tried to make this interesting and informing.

next is : pazuzu please send a word to gediminas and gediminas start giving clues for people to guess the word :)

Gediminas
Wednesday 04th of January 2006 11:16:39 AM
Hamid, aside from the diacritic marks with shin, I'm not familiar with the other symbols, heh. I can still read it without them. Are they used to denote the vowel?

I've found that if my pronunciation of the short a, i, and u is "schwa enough", it almost makes not so huge a difference how it would be transcribed. Not sure if that's the right way to go, but hopefully I'll be obtaining a microphone shortly to try and run my pronunciations by you all. Hopefully, the background I do have will help me there.

شكرا

hamid18
Wednesday 04th of January 2006 11:41:15 AM
hehe yes those marks indicate the vowel sound :) but you wont see any of them in colloquial arabic whether its in a newspaper or on tv or in a book (unless it's an elementary school book)

Gediminas
Wednesday 04th of January 2006 12:03:22 PM
I haven't encountered them in my book. I'm glad actually. I don't think handicaps like that help in the long run. But I guess we'll know when you hear my pronunciations ;)

Pazuzu
Wednesday 04th of January 2006 11:15:55 PM
Well these marks have a major importance to master the arabic language, and to start talking in arabic. No Arab book indicates it (unless it is for ornemental purpose), and that is because these books are oriented to arab readers who can make the difference between different words via there meaning, but when you are trying to understand the word (when you are reading it for the first time) you need these symbols. I don't know how to write these symbols, so I can understand how frustrating it can be to try to find them on your own, but if you practice to listen to arab talk then you will naturally learn them, with little effort. But sooner or later you will have to face these annoying little bugs lol.

Pazuzu
Wednesday 04th of January 2006 11:23:48 PM
hey I sent the word, but I am not sure Gediminas recieved lol! let me know if you have recieved it please.
BTW I was participating in other forums, and I noticed that in difficult languages the members usually deliberatly post in two languages, I think we can try that too, at least the arab members(whenever possible) to provide more contact with the arab language for the others...
I wonder what the other members might think?

remy
Thursday 05th of January 2006 05:10:19 PM

أحب رأئيك لانه سيساعدني في المحادثة بالعربية

as for gediminas don't worry small steps lead to big ones ;)

Pazuzu
Friday 06th of January 2006 03:13:05 AM
أظنّ أنّ صافية قصدت أن تقول:"أحبّ رؤيتك لأنها ستساعدني في المحادثة العربية". الأفضل قول:"أحبّ رؤيتك تكتبين بالعربية لأنها ستساعدني في المحادثة". لكنّها لم تكن تدرك قاعدة كتابة الهمزة.صافية أن شئت شرحناها لكنّ ذلك يستلزم معرفة الحركات

I think that safia meant to say: "I like seeing you talk because it will help me talk in arabic". In arabic it is preffered to say : :I like seeing you talk in arabic because it will help me talk". But she isn't familiar with the rules to write the "hamza". Sofia if you like we can explain it for you but that requires the knowledge of the marks (the ones we were talking about before).

Any ideas?

hamid18
Thursday 12th of January 2006 10:27:34 AM
the first way is a noun
the second way is a verb
:) but sometimes you can use a noun in place of the verb (usually when one verb follows another)...it just has to be written a certain way

or example "he wants to sleep" can be written like this:
هو يريد أن ينام

and like this:
هو يريد النوم

oh by the way, "na'am" (yes) is written like this نعم ;)

Ok, I'll try to make this easier.
First clue:
It's essential in learning a new language.

حسنا سأحاول جعل الكلمة الجديدة أسهل.
ألدليل الأوّل:
هو أساسيّ عند تعلّم لغة جديدة.

wavesculptor I will try doing that but I am not sure if it serves you well, because the transcription of the phonetics might be erroned (we have to post a thread about the different conventions that we are using in order to make you understand what we are sending as we are sending it exactly):

hasanan, sa'oohawel jaala lkalima ljadida ashal.
addalil al'awwal:
hoowa asasiyon iinda taaallom logha jadida.

no, not all words :) :) !

I thought only the key word, once it has been find out!

for ex. "family"

shoukran

no not patience.
second clue:
"it is held in the hand".

لا ليس الصبر.
الدّليل الثاني:
يحمل باليد.

great! :) since this is the first time i choose a word, i will make it easy.
the word is something you need to have when you travel.

عظيم ! لأن هذه هي المرة الأولي التي أختار فيها كلمة ، سأجعلها سهلة.
الكلمة هي شئ تحتاجه عندما تسافر

:) No it's neither currency nor passport. The thing is made of paper, yet not money, and you need to show, yet not a passport.

:) لا ... ليس مالا ولا جوازا للسفر.
الشئ مصنوع من الورق لكنه ليس مالا، وانت تحتاح لابرازه لكنه ليس جوازا للسفر.

Hi there,
I suggest that wavesculptor chooses a word and we go on in the game ... maybe Anja is busy and can't access internet.
About messages that disappear, well it's a problem but when u post a reply to the forum, all postings appear from everybody, so posting in this forum is Ok.
soo, please choose a word and send us the hint wavesculptor, waiting for you.
shokran, salam.
Mohamed
ps. Thanks pazuzu for telling me about the case here, I'm quite busy and the forum is getting REALLY huge. I will try to be more active though. viele spass

shukran mohamed. i'm sorry that it took so long time 4 me to come back, i couldn't catch a moment to go online.

so guys, it is neither relativity theory nor telescope.

it is an object that makes life much, much easier and comfortable. You can find and see it everywhere.... but it produces some negative effects on living beeings as well.

Please write arabic words in english transcription as well, I still can't read arabic letters.
