arabic vocab: salam everyone! ok people here's what i've got in mind. lets make our own vocab book. each one of us can post a word in arabic and translate it to english. and if you are a complete beginner it doesn't mean you can't post on the contrary post the word in english and the non beginners or natives can post back in arabic. that way everyone will practise and learn :D and the words need not be connected!

Yes, Hamid is right ...
and even if words are already there in the phrases, it's always easier to know the meaning of a stand-alone word then knowing it's meaning between other words in a phrase.

maybe we should also include the plural forms? because there are a lot of irregular plurals in arabic. it might make it eaasier to learn the language

Here're corrections on posts sent so far, please everybody edit his/her post if needed :

- فندق (Fonduq) = Hotel
فنادق (fanaadiq) = Hotels

- كثير kathir = much
- أكثر aakthar = more

great job people ... i have a suggestion, :
"nouns in Arabic language are derived from verbs, so, verbs (in past tense particularly) are considered the "root" of the nouns derived from it. For example :
from the verb : كتب (katab : wrote), nouns like : كاتب (kaatib : a writer), كتاب (ketab : a book) can be derived. Similarly : تكلم ( takallam : spoke ) => كلمة (kalimah : a word )"
So, a good idea is to write some 'root' verb (e.g. a verb in the past tense with the 'he' pronoun , and let people post any words derived from this verb ... for example :

if i post :
كتب katab = (he) wrote

the next may send :
كتاب ketaab = book

or :
كاتب kaatib = writer

then we switch to another verb

Well, perhaps you will need to consult a dictionary, but this way will really reveal a very bright side in the Arabic language: "deriving many words from the same root!" ... now i wrote a list below of 'root's and someone choose which to start with. please tell me what you think ... shokran


فعل fa'al = did
كتب katab = wrote
رسم rasam = drew
أكل 'akal = ate
شرب sharib = drank
لعب la'ib = played
ذهب zahab = went
جاء gaa' = came
قال qaal = said
حدث hadath = happened

umm.... i'll start with rasam = drew

rasa'am = artist (when you see a (') it means the same letter is being repeated so stress on the first one and go easy on the second one :) )

useful phrases: erm, word lists aren't much good without examples of how to use the target words. MAybe we could practice with the phrases in the Phrase base, and we can also add some other useful ones we think of.
anyway, once I get into this, and it'll be about the 50th time I've tried, I'll get back with some ideas.

Also, I'd like to know some negative forms...LA, MA, MU, and are there any others? Some useful phreases would be great, ANYONE?

qaa'el = it's a person who is talking but not exactly a narrator
al rawee = narrator

and yes i like medway's idea of writing the word or verb and then make a sentence out of it :)

no, i don't want a drink. = la, laoredo an ashraba shayan.

and a drink = sharab but we don't use it while talking we just use the verb to drink = tashrab

interesting...: so the ATOREDO word is an offer, , the root must mean to like, but you seem to use two negatives in LA, LATOREDO

as for the negatives la = no
laoredo = i don't want

aToredo = is do YOU want
aoredo - is I want ( we take the T out if we are speaking of ourselves)

1.as for the i really don't like doing something = ana la ohebo an afal ( something)

lets analyse it = ana-i, la = no/ don't
ohebo = like , an is like to , afal - is the verb to do (doing)

yes, really, that's very helpful!

I always encourage students to study examples of how a word is used , rather than just the meaning in another language...its how a word works in context that matters!
Remy is doing a great job.

Could we please have some sentences using MODALS [ must, can, will, would, have to]
: these are really useful constructions!

hamid18 you're first sentence is correct but you missed a letter in the word tashrab you wrote shrab you forgot the "TA" i dont know why i can't write in arabic here :(

and your second one too lol you forgot the a in afal otherwise you're perfect ;)

in the original arabic we say lets see....
example: i like doing the laundary at home (not really :) )

ana ahobo an akoma bel gasel fee al bayt.

analsying it = ana- i, ahobo - like, an akoma- doing, bel gasel - the laundary, fee-at, al bayt - home.

notice that i didn't use the word afal - to do i used akom-to do they both have the same meaning but you use them in different situations like for example someone asks you - did you do the laundary yet? you'll reply sa afal thalk alan which means i'll do that now.


medway, hmm.... sentences using MODALS...

must- yajb (which also means should in arabic)

yajb an tadhab ela al madrasa - you should go to school
yajb - should, an tadhab - you go (arabic is a bit cracked up it doesn't have the same order in english), ela-to, al madrasa - school

i'll form the sentences and post them later coz i want to form easy sentences :) hope this helps for now

hiya medway here i got your sentences sorry to take so long yesterday i had to go and run a race 3km and then i went to la fete de la musique and i got home at about 10pm :D anyway:

(1)must - yajb
yajb an tadhab ela al madrasa - you must go to school

an tadhab - go , ela - to , al madrasa-school

(2)can - astate'a
ana astate'a an akra'a - i can read
ana - i , astate'a - can, akra'a - read

(3)will - sawfa
sawfa adroso gadan - i will study tomorrow
sawfa - i will, adroso -study, gadan - tomorrow

(4) would -hal

hal to hebo an tashrab koban meen al shay? - would you like to have a cup of tea?
hal - would, to hebo - you like, an tashrab -to drink, koban - a cup, meen al shay - of tea.

(5)have to - alyka an

alyka an tadros dorosak- you have to study your lessons

alyka - you have to , an tadros - study, dorosak - your lessons.

i hope this helps. i purposely analaysed and translated each and every word so that you can learn then and make new sentences using the different words :)

تفاعل (tafaa'el) = to interact
مفعول (maf'ool) = an effect


and i'm guessing there is no use for "ba'an" بأن? lol

hehe laisveb74 and yeah i agree on the write bigger! :) for beginners i suggest you look at some of the links in the post aymosa'ada by mohamed because when i saw them i really liked them and they are very useful and keep reading! :) or you could join our online classes that are every friday which i should thank everyone for NOT coming and making me wait :(

hamid18 umm.... the an doesn't really have a specific meaning really. your sentence is correct when you said

yajib an azhab = i must go
if we analyse it yajib - must , azhab = go, an is used to link both of the words

and yes you should use it with should, could , must....

there is another word written similarly but with the hamza underneath called ena

ena al ta'amo ladeed - the food is delicious

al ta'amo = food, ladeed =delicious, here ena is a combination of the and is.

be'an = by
you framed the sentence wrong lol you said i need to by go

like for example:

you could be the first in class by studying everyday=
yomkeen an takoon al awal fee al saf ba'an tadroos kol yaom.
analysation time :D yomkeen = you could , an takoon - be, al awal - the first, fee - in, al saf = class, ba'an =by, studying = tadroos, kol yaom = everyday.

the marathon was in feb i didn't run that but i marshelled!! ;) and i'm running 3km and 5km races at the moment and i'm trying to increase my distance i went for 7 km last week i want to try 8 km in 2 weeks :)

faqr = thinking but we don't usually use that word when we speak. people who use that word are mostly indians and pakistains coz they find it really easy to make sense hehe they use it alot here in bahrain. they may say something like ma fee faqr which means you aren't thinking or you're not using your brains :p it makes sense but it isn't the right arabic like for example if i say in english i market go when i'm meaning to say is that i'm going to the market i do make sense but it's not the right english ;)

there is another word which is fqr = poverty/ very poor
like in sudan or africa they have fqr.

I cut and paste all the short phrases frm the 'translations' section and try to review them . i am also keeping a notebook on phrases I overhear...the ' faqr' sound is something I hear often from my arab students , so its not pidgin arabic...anyway, while on the subject, speaking a rough , incorrect version is the best first step...its being afraid to make mistakes that is the biggest stumbling block to learning a language...

yes it doesn't really matter if your grammar is wrong or framing the sentence is wrong as long as you make sense and people can understand you it's good :) and well maybe the faqr word is used by the saudis but i know for sure that in bahrain and the UAE it's not used at all ;)

when i'm ready to write in arabic i switch the language on my computer by pressing ALT+SHIFT. if that doesn't work then there should be a little language button somewhere on your computer that says something like EN (english) or AR (arabic). try clicking that for more options

anytime sweetheart :) when i write in microsoft word or notepad i can write in arabic but here in this website for some reason i can't :s

sometimes when i see لكن,الى or لان they have an object pronoun like ي ك ه ها at the end.
can these words only use those suffixes when it's immediately followed by a preposition like من (from)?

that's because you are adding the subject for example:

fatima najahat la'anaha darasat = fatima passed because she studied

la'ana = because = لان
la'anaHA - because she = لانها

the ha is actually indicating fatima instead of writing her name again we say she which is ha
lakeenaHA - but she =لكنها
elayHA - to her= اليها :)

and adkar means yeah it's something like admit but not really admit a crime for example adkar means say or call upon like in the middle east we say adkar allah which means call upon allah. :)

ok "library" should be easy to remember:
مكـتب (maktab) = a desk/office
مكـتبة (maktabah) = a library
كاتب (kaateb) = a writer
كـتاب (ketaab) = a book

by the way, when you describe nouns with numbers, do you usually write it something like this?
كـتبان (katabane) = two books
كـتبا (kataba) = three (or more) books

hehe i learned to speak/write arabic like 10 years ago. i'm part arab (my ancestors were arab) and i attended a muslim school here in america. i just graduated last year and finished my first year of college lol but i'm trying to improve it so that i can converse better. they taught us the official arabic, but they also taught us a little bit about holding conversations.

oh ok we're adding the definite article now :)

well there are times when al ال takes on the sound of these letters: د ذ ر ز ث ت ن ط ظ س ش ص ض

so for شمس shams (sun) instead of saying al-shams you, say ash-shams الشمس
and for nas ناس instead of saying al-nas, you say an-nas

i will be on vacation for a the next few days (FINALLY!!!! lol) so i won't be able to answer any questions after today until i return.

just a few corrections, you got confused between the father and mother's side you switched , and aunt you pronounced it right but wrote it in a different way:p

well there are no exact latin words to show you how to pronounce them thats why we write the numbers when we arabs chat with each other and don't want to write in our script. :D

like for example in bahraini we say s5bar? = how are you? and it's pronounced something like skbar but to elaborate the k in the right sense we write 5 hehe i know you didn't understand anything :D

they have 2 other arabic forumsEgyptian, and Lebanese. but i think that this is the busiest forum. this forum teaches how to write, and the pronunciation of Classic Arabic. but yes this forum is mostly for writers lol

yippers friday, well if you're in wales there isnt a big time difference cos i'm just 2 hours ahead of you. and skype is like MSN but you can have audio and chat conversations in it which will be good for practising. you can download it from www.skype.com it won't take long ;)

and yippers you're arabic is also the plastinian dialect :) and let me tell the others that usually lebenese, palestinien, syrian, jordainian are almost the same they have the same tone and are different then the egyption dialect and gulf dialect :D

she went to a school before she got married, and her husband's mother lives with them. she has 2 daughters mariam and laila. her husband's mother is in palestine at the moment with daughter's family and they'll be going there for holiday in december.

i hope that was right :)

note : martamme is used differently in different regions of the middle east. in some places it means my uncle's wife and in some places it's the husband's mother and some places it's stepmother :)

Some assistance ...please.: Well I tried to download the audio for Arabic transltions and so I clicked download right and this little box pooped up that read "Sorry you are not alowed accsess members only" I thought I was already a member I have access to this forum.. so I dont know why It it didnt let me download the audio so that I can listen to the Arabic pronunciation of the words .If nobody knows why this is but is willing to take a long distance call from a harmless stranger who needs serious help fast in order to speak Arabic with the correct pernunciation i'll be more than grateful to pick up a calling card from the nearest gas station or seveneleven on my home. please anybody let me know how what I may do i'd appretiate it.

Can I suggest that we used some letters to represent those unique arabic letters like sad, dhad etc .
something like the following:
2=hamzah: a glottal stop as in 'yuck'without the 'ck'sound(ya2ti=he comes ie. ya, alif hamzah,ta and ya)
3=ain : (asslam3lykm)(ma3na)voiced pharyngeal fricative, does not exist in english;
5=sad : thick 's' sound , hyya 3la a55lah(come upon the prayer)
9=dhad : emphatic voiced alveolar stop(maw9u3=topic)
7=haa :(mu7ammad) voiceless pharyngeal fricative as in saying 'heart''high' instead of 'hood''hid'
6=taa :(6aalibun=a student)) saying 'taaa'and blocking the throat with the tongue
x=dza:(salaatul xuhr) its zee with tongue blocking the throat

what do you guys think? this is for the benefit of those who are unable to use the arabic fonts yet.

I teach you now a nice phrase from the islamic literature, which is easy to remember, and you may understand all the words it contains. The following words has been told by Mohammed, the Messenger of Allah - may peace be upon him - (particular):

ساعة و ساعة
Saa3ah wa saa3ah

Vocabulary:
saa3ah - hour, clock, timepiece, watch, also the Hour of Resurrection
wa - and, plus

Literary translation (like):
Hour and hour.

But means the same what also mentioned in the Bible: "To every thing there is a season." (Ecc 3:1)

(Note that how easy sentence describes a more significant wisdom.)

Differences between the literary and spoken arabic: As-salaam alaykum!

When we talk about the arabic language we should notice an important thing, that there's a literary and many spoken form of arabic. Of course there are some differences between them.
The literary arabic is more complex, exact, and has a stricty grammar. Similar to latin however it's a semitic language. This is almost a dead language too (rarely used).
The spoken arabic is actually only the dialect of literary arabic. More easy to learn and speak. This differs from land to land. This is the language of the people, and mainly used in everyday communication and show-business.
The literary arabic you can widely use, it's more or less spoken, and understood worldwide.
The spoken arabic is peculiar to only one country or people, however sometimes may be understood elsewhere too.
The spoken arabic uses an easier grammar than literary arabic, and some words prefer in place of others. But the main difference is the pronunciation (see ج pronunced as j in joke, s in pleasure, g in game, etc.).

For example one general sentence "how are you":
كيف حالك Kayfa 7alak? - literary
Izzayk? - egyptian
Shlaunak? - syrian
Washrak? - algerian

In the light of this one should choose between the literary and spoken arabic to learn at first.

I think literary arabic is harder to learn, but after you learned, you can easily acquire any dialect.

Ps: bukra only means "tomorrow" in the spoken arabic. In literary arabic it means "early". (See hebrew boker=morning) How is it "tomorrow" in literary arabic? غد ghad (ghadan).

Anatomy of asking how you are :): السلام عليكم

As Meg has written there are lots of this phrase. It's because of the words of the Rasool صلى الله عليه و سلم : "The good word is charity" (الكلمة الطيبة صدقة ). So the muslims prefer asking these formal questions, to earn good points (حسنة ) in the afterlife (آخرة ).

So let us anatomize those phrases! :)

Izzayk: Izzay=how (in egyptian dialect) + K as 2. person singular suffix (dameer al-muttasila)

Shlaunak: Sh=Aysh (أيش=أيّ شيء )=what (nowadays used in place of ma /ما/ and from this derives the "sh", "ay", "wash" too)
+ laun (لون )=color, tone, kind, form, but here: feel, mood + K (see above)

Washrak: wash=see above, rak=? Take this as homework and ask an algerian. :)

Dialects vs. classical arabic /part 2/ :): Wa alaykum salam!

Aysh is not a slang, nor a dialect. There's a hadith (report) in which the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم uses this word.
It can be found also in the biggest arabic lexicon, the Lisaan al-3arab, and in al-Ghaniy too.

Bas/bos means فقط (faqa6) so: enough, solely, only, just, etc. بسّ (bass) in literary arabic is a word to the cat.

mush/mish used in place of ليس (lays) what is a verb for negation, and also in place of the various negatives: ما, لا, لم, لن.

Al baaqi ani mish faahim. The remaining I don't understand. ;)

Apropos a semi-sentence what shows well the difference between the literary and the spoken arabic:

على جنب الشجرة
in classical arabic pronunced as follows:
3alaa janb ish-shajarah
but I heard pronunced somewhere in Egypt as follows:
3alaa ganb as-sagara (where g pronunces as in game)

It has been said that the peasantry in Egypt pronunce like this.
/It's interesting when we note that the syriac also prefer the g and s sounds in place of j and sh (cp. reesh gamla means ra2s al-jamal in arabic, the s-sh they use vice versa, and also in hebrew the same sentence would be rosh ha-gamal)./

Thats's why one should learn only one dialect at the same time if he doesn't want to be confused. :)

But then again, even if i see the words on paper and even go to the feat of memorizing them, i still wouldn't know how to pronounce them. I believe that the best way to learn the language is through actual conversations. However, there are few people in my country who speak arabic.

hi all,
I know that it is perhaps a little bit of topic, but I'm looking for all of the kinship terms in arabic. I searched pb and found this thread
http://www.phrasebase.com/forum/read.php?TID=7785, but unfortunately there was no "arabic" answer. Could someone or more than one person fill in the words, please. I know it's a lot of work but I'm really interested in this stuff. I have found some of terms I'm looking for in this thread (like brother, sisters, aunt...) but something like grandmother or cousin I couldn't find and besides a list would be nice instead of a thread where I have to search 14 pages.

salam parwiz. i don't know of any websites that translate Arabic into Farsi so you might have to translate words from arabic to english to farsi. i will try to look for a website to help you.

hamid, it is already opened but the problem is there are no visitors there LOOOL.

anyway my new words:
1. laysa=he/it is/was not: laysa khalid
mujtahideen(Khalid is not hardworking)
2.laysat=she/it is/was not: laisat attaalibah haadhirah fi almadrasah(the female student is not present at school)
3.laisoo->they are not
4.lasnaa->we are not
5.lastu->i am not
6.lasta->you are not
7.lasti->you(fem.) are not

i will remember this hehe. it's strange there are a lot of ethiopian students and (i think) some pakistanis. i can sort of understand them when they speak their own languages but they can't really understand me when i speak to them in arabic :s

mishwar means a bit of work or something i've got to do...

for example i'd say i have a mishwar in london... i'm saying that i've got something to do in london... there isn't a specific word in english for me to tell you but that's bascially what it means..

Some new words(be3Du min almufradaat):

قَوْسُ قُزَح‎ (qawsu quzah) ‎= rainbow
وَظِيفَة (waZifah)=employment,assignment
ساحة ونقاش(saa7a7 wa nuqaash) = forum & discussion

By the way just a little suggestion: maybe we should minimize the number of new threads and focused on just a few so that we wont have to jump here and there too much and "spread ourselves too thinly" sort of :) i happened to notice that many new thread could easily be categorized under any 1 of the earlier threads...just a thot!! ;)
