make sentences: ok everyone i thought we'll start by making simple little sentences but first we need a few vocabs to make the sentences with :)
Vocab:
Animals hayawanat- حيوانات
Cow bakara بقرة
Cat keta قطة
Dog kalb -كلب
Horse hesan حصان
Donkey himar/heemar حمار
Bird asfoor عصفور
Family aeela عائلة
Mother oom أم
Father ab أب
Sister okt أخت
Brother ak-أخ
Beautiful jameela- جميلة
Quiet hadea- هدأ
Dirty kader-قذر
Fast sarea سريع
Small sager صغير
After learning these words you can easily make sentences
The al- ال
It is used for introducing the subject and is doesnt exsist really in Arabic.
For example here are some sentences:
Al hesan sarea the horse is fast -الحصان سريع
Al hemar kadr the donkey is dirty- الحمار قذر
Al oom jameela the mother is beautiful -الأم جميلة
Now you make your own sentences and post them here for me to check them ;)

lasiveb74 you're right but you switched the words yello and bird :p
it'll be al asfoor al assfar sager :)
and writing it in the arabic letters isnt necessary as long as you can make you're sentence and say it ;)

Hi Remy, I have just joined phrasebase and still figuring out how it all works.

I am wondering with pronunciation whether there is room for accents like 'a for the a to be heavy or lightly pronounce. what do you think?
What is your background? as there are different words for different regions of the arab world etc.

hi meg welcome to phrasebase arabic forum :) glad you joined in ;) and you're sentence is right :D
well as for accents, in arabic there are accents but they are written on top on the arabic alphebets that's why we can't write them on the latin letters when we write down the pronouncation.
btw this is for everyone browsing this forum the translation to meg's sentence is:
al aeela sager oo hadea - the family is small and quiet :)
i'm from bahrian it's an island in the arabian gulf it's very small and you can drive around the country in one day ;) the mother tongue is arabic but english is widely used as bahrain was ruled by both the portuguese and the british. it's very modern but also traditional it's a great place and hey you gave me an idea ;) i'll post some pictures of bahrain :D

what makes them different is is their pronouncation and the way they are written notice the arabic alphebets even if you can't read them.
second meg dear you're saying them in the palestinien dialect i think but i'm not so sure as it's the first time i hear of the word you said :S so it's not the same as the classical or original arabic and in the rest of the middle east everyone says

and crystal when you use the word small always use it after the subject like for example:
i am small - ana sakeera
the cat is small - al keta sakeera
even if in english it's switched,
the small cat is fat = al keta al sakeera sameena ;)

fankee hun, yayyy you're going to have so much fun. i was in egypt a year ago and it was cool. the weather is magnificent i was in cairo and alexandria and was in sharm al sheikh too.. the food is yummy and the mangoes are *drools* hehe :D

fankee! you too, well the belly dancing is in these boat rides on the nile you buy a ticket and you get a buffet dinner, while watching belly dancing and then after show you can go up on the deck and look out it's a beautiful view.... i went on a boat called SOIREE it's a 5 star thingy but you can go on the pharoah boat it's also 5 star. it's just a 2 hours thingy but it's so much fun. you'll enjoy the music and dancing. ;)

Just joining: I've been listening in and have a question. When Fawzee writes, the words have numbers in them? (7atta (until)) starts with a numeral seven before the 'a'. Is this my computer, or is there an alphabet code or accent code that I don't know?

THE TRANSLITERATION LETTERS:LETTERS NOT FOUND IN ENGLISH
2=hamzah: a glottal stop as in saying 'aaa' and stopping the airflow immediately(jaa2a=he came)
3=ain : voiced pharyngeal fricative, (assalaamu3alykum)(3yn=eye)
9=dhad : emphatic voiced alveolar stop as in Don(english)
7=haa : (mu7ammad) voiceless pharyngeal fricative as the 'h'in 'heart''high' instead of 'hood''hid'
6=taa : saying 'taaa' with thick 'T'(6aaliban)

Marhaba, I have found this great website after months of searching. I would like to learn arabic grammar, so with some hard work and some help I can speak some understandable arabic :D.
I know arabic script already and a limited vocabulary. I am living in America. Well, here I go:
Anaa Murtaza, wa anaa 14 sinat. anaa min amrikiun.
I would say more, but I would first like to learn how to type in arabic so my head wouldn't have to work so hard transcribing it to english.
I also have 1 question: I know in different places the last syllable of a word will change, from (example) jameelate, jameelato, jameelata (beautiful-female). I just wanted to know some of the occasions where I would use one form and not the other.

regarding arabic fonts, i believe u hv to enable it by going to the control panel->regional options->language settings for the computer->tick the relevant boxes.
*note:u might need the windows CD to complete the setting if it is for the 1st time or if the language software hasnt been installed(really not sure abt this)
Now as for the arabic grammar:
1)jameelatun=the nominative case,with the dhamma ending ie. without any other circumstances that needs it to be changed.
2)jameelati=the genitive case,with the kasra ending when there is a preposition before it
3)jameelata= the accusative case,this is in the fatha form ie. when it is an object of a verb
this changes in the ending sounds is the basis of the mubtada2(subject) and khabar(predicate) formation.
NOMINATIVE CASE: Bintun jameelatun=a beautiful girl
Albintu jameelatun=the girl is beautiful(notice that wit 'Al'(the definitive noun ,the bintun becomes albintu)
GENITIVE CASE: 3jibtu 3an/min albinti aljameelati=i am amazed at the beautiful girl(in conversation we dont pronounce as aljameelati but aljameela)
ACCUSATIVE CASE:Ra2ytu albinta aljameelata(I looked at the beautiful girl)

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm sure there are many more cases (my brother, who studies arabic studies, told me that the grammar cannot be easily explainedthere are too many cases :D) but i'll keep this in mind.
Also, just a very small request (if you find it helps you, then please keep doing it). When you write the arabic in english font, I have trouble understanding which characters you are trying to depict when you use the numbers, like in "3jibtu". Is there a page where I can figure out what character you are trying to show me, or will I just have to learn them by picking them up :)?
One small question, when a word is not definate (with Al) we drop the tanween?
Next thing, when you showed me the different cases for Nominative, Genitive, and Accusative, I noticed that in nominative ("jameelatun/jameelato") the word(s) that nominative are the subject of the sentence. I couldn't distinguish the genitive's ("jameelatin/jameelate") and accusative's ("jameelatan/jameelata") place from each other, both are objects. When do I know when use genitive or accusative (or nominative, in more complex situations)?
I am greatly sorry for asking so many questions in 1 post, but I have always wanted to learn arabic, and over the time I have formulated many questions :). I hope you will be able to answer these questions easily.

ok murtaza abt genitive and accusative:
ACCUSATIVE:normally found in a verb sentence(jumla fi3liyya)
ex. qara2tu kitaaban jameelan= i read a nice book.
the "kitaab" is in the accusative form ie. the ending is with a fat-ha (kitaaban not kitaabun or kitaabi).
GENITIVE:also with a verb sentence. ex. qara2tu kitaaban fi yawmi al-ahad al-maadhi= i read a book last Sunday.
ex.2. wajadtu fi alkitaabi Sooraatan jameelatan= i found nice pictures in the book
Here "yawmi","alkitaabi" are in the genitive forms due to the preposition or the word 'fi" which is called in arabic harfu jar(other such words are "bi"(with),"ma3a"(together), bayna(between),tahta(under),fawqa(above) to name a few.
"Sooraatan" is accusative and "jameelatan" is the adjective that describes the "Sooraatan" and must be in the same form as the word it describes(ie. jameelatan must also be in accusative just as sooraatan is).

Thanks again, I know understand when to use "genitive" case, at least in a simple structured sentence :). However, now i'm lost with "accusative" :(.
Though, here is what i've learned of Andrea and fawzee (thank you very much for this):
Nominative (ending with ﯗ sound): Used in sentence that do not have verbs, only the noun and adjective. EX:
ﺍﻞﺸﺎﺮﻉ ﻄﻭﻴﻞ=The street is long
Genitive (ending with ﺇ sound): Used when preceeded by a preposition. EX:
ﺪﻔﺖﺮﻱ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻔﺻﻞ=My bag is in the classroom (I did something new here, I am not sure if it is proper grammar or not). ﺍﻟﻔﺻﻞ would be in genitive form.
Is this right? I think I understand the concepts you showed me, I just hope that I carried them out correctly :).

1. the street is long = al-shaari3(u) taweel(un)
There is no genitive or accussative in this sentence. The word alshaari3u is the mubtada'(the subject) and "taweelun" is the khabar(predicate), so both should be in the nominative form(either in the dhammah or tanwin dhammah).
2.my bag is in the classroom=haqeebaty fi qaa3ati aldars(i).
Here qaa3ati is the genitive form becoz of the word "fi" before it. And aldarsi follows it in form becoz the word "aldars" is an integral part of "qaa3at" .
3. To make the 1st sentence having an accusative form we say like this:
Kaana Alshaari3u Taweela=it was a long street. The word kaana transform the predicate into accusative form ie. from taweelun(dhammah) to taweela(fat-ha).
4. to make the 2nd sentence in the accusative we can say like this:
taraktu alhaqeebata fi qaa3atiddars(qaa3ati aldarsi). Here alhaqeebatu changes to alhaqeebata becoz it is the object of the verb taraktu( i left). So you can say like , taraktu alkitaba 3la almaktab(i)=i left the book on the table.The book is the object of the verb so it becomes alkitaba not alkitaabu or alkitaabi.
hakaza faqat li hazihi marrah.

ok here is your mistakes you'd right the verb in feminie form and right the object in masculine.
for example:
al asfoor jameela - the bird is beautiful
asfoor - masculine, jameelA is feminine .
don't forget that in arabic the A in the end means feminity ( excuse my english i haven't written english for almost 3 weeks so my spellings are screwed :p )
so if the bird is masculine it would be:
al asfoor jameel - the bird is beautiful
if it is feminie
al asfoorA jameelA.
same goes to all:
al ketA sagerA - the cat is small
al ket sager - the cat is small
al hayawanat LAYSAT hadea - the animals aren't quiet
LAYSAT means aren't or isn't .... i understand what you wanted to say cos you wrote LA as in not or no :)

the story about AL... it is actually called AL EL TAREEF which means introducation - al is all about introducing the object of name.
for example if you say sky i'll ask what sky? *gives a dumb look*
but if you say THE sky so i'll be like oh that sky the one above us with all the stars and planets :D
in all arabic countries especially the gulf countries every family name has AL before it. for example the ruling family in bahrain is :
AL khalifa, THE khalifa. my dad's name is khalifa if you say khalifa people would think it's just a normal person but when you say AL KHALIFA people would say oh the ruling family.
did you get it? so we use it to introduce the thing
as andrea said AL asfoor jameel - she's pointing to a particular bird.
and dear arabic is complicated when you study literature like shakespear we have poets and writes like him and in school we have to analyse it *shudders* when you see that you'll laugh in the face of other grammer *shudders again*

dakhalat annahlah(al-nahlah) fizzahrah(fy alzahrah)= entered the bee inside the flower or dakhalat annahlah azzahrah without the word "fy".
zahaba = it/he went(past tense), yazhab = it/he is going(present or future)

dakhalat al nahlah fee alzahrah - entered the bee inside the flower
or dahabat al nahlah ela dakeel al zahrah - went the bee inside the flower.

dakalat = entered ( also a verb)
and your order in arabic is right
verb- subject - object
but you put a verb after the subject too instead you could use fee = into which will indicate the entry if you want :)

okta doesn't really make any sense but if you say okto it does make sense but that means you need to say al okto jameelatoon kind of like the accents stuff which is actually not written down. so basically we say al okt jameela :)

hob is the verb to love so you need to conjugate it ;)

First i was told by my friend, who is learning Arabic, that
'i love you' = ana ahabek
then i met a person on a different community who told me that it's actually "behibek"
And Sherine Wagdy sings (although i'm still trying to find her lyrics, never mind her translated lyrics) "ana bahebak"
are these different dialects?

they both have the same meaning
behibek is a local word that is present in every dialect like when we say yeah it's present in the british, american, austrailian, canadien and all the english dialects. Sherine wagdy said ana bahebak is also i love you like saying i'm loving you so they all mean the same but can be said in a hundred different ways.
DID YOU KNOW THAT :
Arabic has the most different words and phrases to say i love you then any other language in the world.
hehe i read that in one of the believe it or not thingys they put in the magazines :p

ana + verb + the object or however it's called in english :p

ana oreedu an ashraba laban(we normally put the word(conjuction) "an" between 2 present continous verbs and the verb after "an" should be in accussative i.e ashraba not ashrabu or ashrabi.
as in: ana ohebbu an azhaba ila Makka almukarrama.

the adjective albaared comes after almaa2 becoz it's supposed to describe the water almaa2.
arghabu= i desire

Many learners of arabic(especially me :( ) finds the arabic word قبل very confusing because of its diversity in meaning with slight changes to it. Muqbil is derived from aqbala(alif,qaf,ba lam) meaning "to approach","turn to", or even sometimes it means "to pay attention to" . So Muqbil gives a meaning of approaching as in "assayyara almuqbil" i.e the approaching car.

وطرق انتقال المرض للانسان= a way(tareeqah) to transfer(intiqal) the disease(almaraD) to humans(lil-insaan)
وطرق الوقاية منه= a way to avoid(alwiqayah) from it(the transfer)
But i am still struggling with توعوية,توعية, i know the meaning is enlightenment,enlightening as in:
نشرة توعوية= an "enlightening"(informational) publication
نشرة ارشادية للتوعية= an advisory publication for "enlightenment"(to enlighten,to inform).
But if someone could enlighten us on the origin of the word it would be very appreciated.
Please share with us your thoughts on this.

You're right about turuq it does mean ways or methods and it also sometimes mean steps like for example :
ma heya turuq al najah? - what are the steps leading to success?

Note that in the arabic version the 1st sentence starts with the verb "asdarat"=released(the action)
but i started the english version with the action-doer first because in english we have to start with the doer than the action.
It is more common in arabic to start verbal sentences with the verb 1st.

"tawhid" by itself means unity, but i have to agree with u in the contextual meaning in the sentence which i would incline to translate also as standardization.i.e. the workshop is meant to standardized the inconsistency of the sign language among its practitioners to bring about uniformity in its use.

The al- ال
It is used for introducing the subject and is doesnt exsist really in Arabic.
For example here are some sentences:
Al hesan sarea the horse is fast -الحصان سريع
Al hemar kadr the donkey is dirty- الحمار قذر

I didn't really understand what you said, but I undertood that there is a Lebanese forum :D
But...ok my family is lebanese...but it is better for me to learn lebanese o standard arabic? Because here where I live there are arabic from different place (lebanon, palestine, syria, jordan)

There is a Lebanese Forum here: " I said it in shamy (Levantine)the levant is made from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan and their dialects are all pretty similar. Therefore even if you learn Lebanese you should still understand (and be understood by) other arabs from those countries :)
