| Riget translation - Hi, I\'m working with a subtitled version of Lars von Trier\'s \"Riget\" tv series, and there are two parts I\'m hoping to get help with. I don\'t speak a word of Danish, unfortunately. Interestingly, though, there are enough Indo-European similarities with English and French that I can make out single words here and there, and can sometimes tell when the subtitles were simplified. But the two problems I have are more to do with culture, I suspect. First, can anyone tell me who Professor Tribini is? I did a web search and found some film links in Danish, and that his full name was Christian Jørgen Tribini. In Riget, his name was used as an insult, like this: \"Your problem is being unqualified. [pointing at a disliked hypnotist] You must always obey Professor Tribini. He\'ll count to three - one, two three! And all of a sudden, you\'ll be a good doctor.\" The second part I need help with is a scene involving the director of the hospital. His name is Bob, but at the hospital, everyone calls him \"DG\" (Director General?). One of the doctors makes the mistake of calling him Bob, and he reacts like this: http://members.shaw.ca/evasiveb/bob.mp3 . I have two translations for this dialogue, and they\'re wildly different: \" \'Bob\' is a game of wooden rings. At this hospital, the CEO is to be addressed as DG.\" \" \'Bob\' was an attempt at a graphic user interface for half-wits. At this hospital, senior management is addressed by title!\" What\'s going on here? I\'d be grateful for any help with this, thanks! | |

| - Hej Dronon! All this sounds interesting. Hmm, makes me feel old though :p I can\'t remember when I last saw Riget. I think I should go watch it again sometime soon. Ah ja, enough about me :D Christian Jørgen Tribini was a well-known Danish entertainer and actor. He was known for his impressing torrent of speech. He was known as dr.philur Tribini. By adding -ur the word looks like the Danish word filur which means sly dog, slyboots or something like that. The dialogue: \'Bob\' is a game with red and green towered rings made of wood. At this hospital the management is adressed by title! Hope that helped you a little. If not, please ask again :) | |

| -
Originally posted by Freja \'Bob\' is a game with red and green towered rings made of wood.
Is this an actual game in Denmark? I\'m interested in understanding why the character felt insulted. Thanks very much for the information on Dr. Tribini! I think I\'ll put some introductory subtitles before the episode to explain these things in more detail. You\'ve been a great help! | |

| - You\'re very welcome. Like I said, just ask if anything more :) Ja, it is an actual game. Here you can see bobspillet, but the rules and such are in Danish. If it\'s necessary, I can translate for you. | |
