Twents - I live in Twente (region in Holland), but I can't speak Twents very well... I'm learning though!
Does anyone have interest in the eastern dialect in Holland: Twents? If you have any tips or handy sites, do not hasitate to post them here! It might come in handy for people who want to learn it (I understand that also people who are not from Holland are also interested in dialects, so I type this in English ;-) )

Here are some sites I found (in Dutch):

- Heu, Koen I don't speak Twents either. My grandmother does. I like it very much to hear her talk Twents. Maybe you should post your questions about Twents also on the German part of this forum. In Gemany there are larger Low Saxon areas than in the Netherlands.

Useful phrases - Some useful phrases:

Twents: Joa
Dutch: Ja
English: Yes

Twents: Tot mor'n*
Dutch: Tot morgen
English: See you tomorrow

*The 'r' is not pronounced, so 'mor'n' is pronounced 'mon'. The word also pronounced very quick. Sometimes tot mor'n is just pronounced as one word, kind of like 'tomon'.

Twents: Aju*!
Dutch: Doei! (or: Dag!)
English: Bye!

*the 'u' is pronounced 'ú'

Example:
Ik goat hen. Aju!
Ik ga weg. Doei!
I'm going. Bye!

Aju is not only said in Twente, it's used everywhere in Holland. But in Twents (and some other regional languages) it's used a lot more than elsewhere.

Twents: Doot heanig an!
Dutch: Doe kalm aan!
English: Take it easy!

This is mostly said when someone says goodbye, but it's also used to tell someone to actually take it easy. It's a bit hard to translate to English, but it means something like "take it as it comes".

Example:
Aju, doot heanig* an!
Doei, doe kalm aan!
Bye, take it easy!

*the 'ea' in heanig is pronounced 'è'
When it's very hot, or very cold, or if you're exhausted, or any other extreme condition, people in Twente say:

Twents: Ik leg't bienoah* of!
Dutch: Ik leg het bijna af/ik leg bijna het loodje!
English: I'm almost dying! (it's translated a bit literally)

Example:
Twents: Wat ist koald hier. Ik leg't bienoah of!
Dutch: Wat is het hier koud. Ik bevries bijna!
English: It's so cold here. I'm freezing!

Twents: Hoe hej't dah?
Dutch: Hoe gaat het met je?
English: How are you?

- Ach..now I know what dialect I`ll study :D
MathieuSaturday 22nd of October 2005 10:02:18 PM
- Hehe, nice :) Hmm, 'ik leg het af' is also common in Standard Dutch.. or is it.. :p

I also like Zwols by the way, my grandma's family used to think it cool to just throw out some random Zwolse phrases/proverbs here and there.. I tried to search for info on that, but to no avail so far..

Then it'll be Axnot's grandma for you :p Well, suit yourself :D
But you're right, Zwols is outdated, maybe there are some poems here and there but I doubt if anyone still speaks it seriously..

- When you want to learn Twents, there is a bit of a problem: there are a lot of variants of the dialect. People from Oldenzaal for intance have very different words for the same things from people from Almelo, Ootmarsum etc. For instance "to work" -> In Oldenzaal, people say "werk'n" and in Rijssen it's "wark'n".
This is just a small difference, but some words are totally different from eachother.

----

Some notes:

*In Twents, every 'e' in -en is not pronounced, so you don't say "proaten" (=to talk) but "proat'n".

*The 'r' at the end of a word is also not pronounced. So in stead of "woar" you say "woa".

----

Some more phrases:

Twents: Mangs wa, aait nich
Dutch: Soms wel, maar niet altijd
English: Sometimes, but not always

Twents: Die keal is onmeunig dik!
Dutch: Die kerel/man is ontzettend dronken!
English: That guy is so drunk!

Example:
Twents: Moej em zeen anfoddeken: die keal is onmeunig dik!
Dutch: Moet je hem zien waggelen: die kerel is ontzettend dronken!
English: Look at him wobble: that guy is so drunk!

Twents: Woar bin ie d'r één van?
Dutch: Van wie ben jij familie?
English: Who are you family of?

Example:
Twents: Woar bin ie d'r één van?
-Ik bin d'r één van Peters.
Dutch: Van wie ben jij familie?
-Ik ben van de familie Peters
English: Who are you family of?
-I'm of the Peters family.

Twents: Kuierdroad
Dutch: Telefoon
English: Telephone
(Kuieren = to talk; droad = thread/line -> kuierdroad = a line to talk through)

Twents: Mir(re)weenter
Dutch: Midwinter
English: Midwinter

Twents: moin; goondag; geoavend/goonoavend.
Dutch: goedemorgen; goedendag; goedenavond.
English: good morning; good day; good evening.

More coming up soon.
Aju, doot heanig an!

- Hey Koen :)

My dad's native dialect is Twents as well. But since he is living in Brabant for about 20 years now, you can't hear it anymore. He only speaks a bit different than my mother and I do. But when he is talking to his old friends, I can't even understand what he is saying :P. I don't speak Twents at all.

By the way, after 20 years of living in Brabant, my dad says 'Houdoe' when he is leaving ;).
KoenholioWednesday 26th of October 2005 05:11:03 AM
- Heilsa Aljorun!

I recognize that story ;) My aunt used to live in Twente as well and also lives in Brabant now. But she doesn't have a Twents accent at all anymore (pity :p). Don't know if she can still speak Twents...

I'm only learning Twents as well, so I don't know if everything I posted is correct, especially because there are so many variants of the dialect. Could it be possible for you to show the above to your father so he can correct me if I'm wrong?
No problem if it isn't possible or whatever, but it might be handy, that's all ;)
Thanks in advance!

Heanig an! ;)

- Heu Koen,

In the bookshop 'De Slegte' in Rotterdam there is wordbook Twents - Dutch for only 7,50 euro. I thought you might be interested. I expect you don't visit Rotterdam very often and thought maybe I can buy the book for you and give it to you when I see you on one of the meetings of NH. (Maybe with the 'Herfstwandeling'or maybe on the 'Heydensch drinckgelag'?)

Greetz,

Axnot

KoenholioThursday 27th of October 2005 03:55:41 PM
- Hey Axnot,

That would be great! :D
I'm going to Rotterdam tomorrow, Bob Dylan is giving a concert. But I don't think I will be visiting the city itself, but just the Ahoy. We have a Slegte in Enschede too, I think the odds are good that in a Twents Slegte there can also be found a Twents - Dutch wordbook ;).
I'll take a look around there first. Will probably next week because I go to school in Enschede and I have vacation at the moment.

I have a wordbook Twents - Dutch, Dutch - Twents, but it isn't very extensive. Maybe the one from Rotterdam is better.
Could you tell me who the writer is and what the title is (if it is any other than "Woordenboek Twents - Nederlands")? Then I can look for it in Enschede.
If I can't find it there, it would be very cool if you could bring the book from Rotterdam to a NH meeting (probably will be Heydensch Drinckgelag).

Thanks a lot for the offer!
AxnotThursday 27th of October 2005 05:19:06 PM
- Ok Koen, I will have a look there again (in De Slegte)for the title and de name of the writer.

Axnot

MathieuSaturday 17th of December 2005 01:37:35 AM
- Yay, some more Twents :) Hmm, I think there's "het loopt wel los" in standard Dutch besides "het komt wel goed" etc.

What exactly is your definition of "ouwehoeren"? :D "Ouwehoeren" is talking smalltalk, not messing around, to my knowledge :p

Yeah, that's correct. But " 't löpt wa los" (and many other expressions in Twents) can be used for different situations. :)
What exactly is your definition of "ouwehoeren"? :D
Just messing around, something like 'iemand de gek aansteken' (beetje plagen dus).
I use it for instance in:
"Niet zo ouwehoeren"->"Niet zo klooien"/"Don't screw around so much"

Hope I've made it a little clearer. :)
