- Het is "het huis" en "de auto"

Er is geen echte regel hiervoor. Je zult het lidwoord bij elk woord moeten leren.
(There is no real rule for this*. You'll have to learn the article with every word.)

By the way, where is the post of the topic starter, mr "Teachme"? Did it disappear?

- This de/het topic is one of the most worrying for people I see, it may be down to the mistaken idea that there are equal amounts of words with 'de'and 'het',but this is not so. There are less words with 'het'and just learning the most common by heart is a great start.
I am right, or not?

- Ik weet niet of er meer 'de' woorden dan 'het' woorden zijn, maar het is mogelijk. Ik heb ze nooit geteld.

I don't know if there are more 'de' words than 'het' words, but it's possible. I've never counted them.

- So I'm back from my 2 week holidays, I'll see if I can reintegrate here a bit :)

Yes, students say de/het words are like 2:1.. I believe them I guess :) De words are masculine and feminine together, so it makes sense if there are more. I have no idea what's the best way to learn them, just not think about it too much I guess, since you could acquire it without applying grammar stuff. If you read/hear alot you'll develop a feel. Might be off at times, try to memorize the words that you are getting wrong persistantly. That would be my angle I think..

- And of course, if you're in doubt, there is the old trick of making things diminutive so that everything is 'het'. That can't work forever though...

Hehe :D A friend of mine cheats himself out of the dilemma that way now and then :) You still need to know when to add -je, -tje, -pje or another shape though :p
