- You can find at least 28 dialects in the Netherlands.
(And that in a country that is so small that it's name on the map has to be written in the sea) :D

You can see the dialects on a map here:

http://www.ned.univie.ac.at/publicaties/taalgeschiedenis/nl/dialkarte.htm

You can divide them in 6 main sub-groups.

In the Southern part (as is said: below the main rivers) people speak with the 'soft g'.
So this g has a sound softer than the pronunciation of people living in the Northern part.

Yes, between the Eastern and the Western part is a bigger difference. These differences are only interesting for serious linguists, as it tells something about the history of the language.

Dutch students shouldn't worry about this.

It is fun to notice foreigners that come to live here in the Netherlands, that they automatically take over the dialect of the part they live in.

Notmally people are always capable of speaking a kind of 'midway- Dutch', that is suppost to be understandable for everyone. That starts with not using the specific words that are belonging to the dialect you are speaking.
So besides other pronounciation there are often some other words. Comparable with the special language that is used in profesions for the tools etc...

- Thanks for posting that, I don't really have anything to add about dialects :) Well, one thing though; dialects of Dutch are both rather weird and exotic, and not important at the same time - very few people actually speak a dialect (which is more than just the slight accent from which you can tell where somebody's from), everybody talks pretty standard. Only in real isolated tiny villages, places like that, you can find some real dialect speakers. And in Belgium of course :)
