Dutch Internet Slang - Here\'s a list of some things (mainly abbreviations) that one typically encounters in informal Dutch texts on the net. I haven\'t posted this for you to use, but as a help when decripting Dutch texts that you find yourself for study (don\'t think these \'sloppy\' and informal texts aren\'t useful! they are as close as you can get to the spoken language.. if it wasn\'t for all this bloody slang abbreviations ;)). You could consider using some of these, like \'idd\' and \'iig\', but I don\'t recommend it if you don\'t have a strong basis in the language. I also avoid them in foreign languages. Let\'s face it, there\'s little point in trying to sound cool/casual in a language you hardly know ;)

idd - inderdaad - exactly, indeed
pcies - precies - precisely
w8 - wacht - wait
w88 - wachten - (to) wait
ff, ef - even - for a moment
strax - straks - in a while, soon
nl - namelijk - namely
nix - niks - nothing
iig, ieg - in ieder geval, in elk geval - anyway, in whatever case
mss - misschien - maybe
ws - waarschijnlijk - probably
wrm, wrom - waarom - why
srry - sorry - sorry
gwn - gewoon - normal, simply, just
irri - irritant - annoying
mvg - met vriendelijke groet - best regards
mzzl(s) - mazzel - luck, fluke (goodbye greeting)
suc6, suc7 - succes - good luck
btje - beetje - a bit

And here\'s a list of things that are a bit harder to grasp, since they aren\'t abbreviations or conventions but a blunt recording of the spoken language (comparable to things like \"dunno\" in English). It can cause whole sentences to be glued into one word, since the pronouns \'lean\' against the verbs (they are clitic). Don\'t despair; be glad Dutch doesn\'t use this in the standard written form anymore, like it did in the middle ages :D There\'s little need to \'learn\' this list; just to give you an idea of the stuff that might happen, so that you don\'t end up completely clueless (these are just some random examples of what\'s out there).
Now again you will wonder why the hell you are consorting with all this. Personally, I study Swedish, and I have found reading this style of writing rather enlightening, it tells you a great deal about the way in which people speak when they really are talking. How it would have sounded, which things would be stressed, things like that. There\'s alot of expression in it that standard written forms don\'t tend to capture.

k- (often attached to the verb that follows) - ik - I
-et (often attached to previous word) - het - it (as a direct object)
-em (often attached to previous word) - hem - him
tan?, wtan? - wat dan? - what then?, why that?
ns, es, is - eens - once
dr - d\'r - there, it, her
zn - z\'n - his
n - \'n - a
tis - het is - it is
nie(j) - niet - not

Some example sentences with this speaking-style writing:

\"kga nie\" - \"ik ga niet\"
\"moettie\" - \"moet hij\"
\"kweenie\" - \"ik weet niet\"
\"weekveel\" -\"weet ik veel\"
\"kwillet\" - \"ik wil het\"
\"hak\" (\"haddik\") - \"had ik\"
\"hoe(i)st\" - \"hoe is het\"
\"waddan\"/\"wattan\" - \"wat dan\"
\"moekem\" - \"moet ik hem\"
\"omdattie\" - \"omdat hij\"

Don\'t underestimate this.. for \"omdattie\", there are nearly 10.000 results on Google (and I doubt that many will be by coincidence) :D

This thread is, obviously, anything but exhaustive, if you have any questions about internet slang, \'misspelled\' Dutch, post :)

- Thanks!
That is very helpful!
I have a question about one that isn\'t wriiten above: \"zo\'n\".
What does it mean?
MathieuFriday 05th of May 2006 04:42:06 PM
- \"zo\'n\" is short for \"zo een\" (\"such a\").
Things like \"z\'n\", \"d\'r\", \"\'t\", \"\'n\" (so with the apostroph) are pretty common, also in standard texts. Maybe not in newspaper articles, but they are in newspaper columns and ads for example. Since it\'s not really a slang thing I\'d say all students may well use them themselves if they feel like it :)
Keep it coming :)

- Hello Hayim, sorry, I don\'t understand your text: \'Dat is pcies wat k d8\'. If I understand right, that you maybe said, \'This is precisely Waterford, Ireland, i think\'? May be you are from Ireland, Hayim?
