For INTEGRATION purposes only... - Hallo allemaal!!! Dit is Ian again.....

I have been looking for important materials about the Dutch Society for the sole reason of proper integration. As of the moment I have not found ladyluck so maybe this site can help. I am one of the many mensen who wants to be properly integrated in the Dutch Society... hopefully in the future.

People told me that I have to know a lot about the culture, and what are the DO´S and DON´TS found in the Netherlands, etc....

So, somebody there who wants to give reasonable insights, please reply.....

You may write it in Dutch but please also give the engels equivalent for LEARNING PURPOSES.....

Just to give you an idea about what I know so far.....

In Holland, Dutch people separate the biodegradable and non-biodegradable afval. Garbage collection is done every Tuesday in an alternate basis....

Households also separate empty bottles by color coding. They throw these empty bottles in special containers... Green container for empty green bottles... White container for white empty bottles, etc.

If one is caught violating these simple, yet effective regulations, ONE GET`S FINED!!!!!

Heel erg bedankt....

Do's and don'ts? - I'm not really aware of a strict moral regime here :) People tend to mind their own business only (which is not necessarily a good thing of course). Hmm you have to let people out the train first before you get in... that's about the only unwritten rule I can think of that you really have to obey. As for the rest I think you can more or less do as you please..

You don't really have to sort your garbage, I encourage it because it's good of course, but you won't get sued if you have a glass bottle in your bin. I only keep glass and paper apart by the way, no bio stuff.

Another thing about ..... - Another thing about auto´s, fietsen en walking across a street!!! Who goes first and in which situations?

Last summer I was also stopped by a politie at the WAAL for driving a motor boat to fast!!! How fast could I go then? Coz 3 weeks ago a speedboat(the one used for racing) was going maybe 100 km/hour at the same place where I was stopped.

- Hmm Ian, I do not want to discourage you to go live here in the Netherlands or anything, but at least around here (Leusden, Amersfoort, Utrecht), people are quite asocial when it comes to traffic, and most bicyclists don't seem to pay any attention to what's happening around them. You should always indicate where you're going with your hands when you're on your bicycle, allthough many people don't do it anymore. Traffic from the right has priority unless indicated otherwise (including bicycles, not including pedestrians), also, straight ahead has priority over turning traffic. Example: if you're in a car and want to enter a lane on your left or right, you have to wait for other traffic on your road that's going straight ahead (including pedestrians) until it's clear. To my knowledge there are no rules that favour cars over bicycles, allthough in practice automobiles seem to have a physical advantage, so that drivers can afford to be more asocial than the other parties :P

I have alot of experience with this as I'm bicycling an hour every day for almost 10 years now :) Some car drivers seem to make up their own rules on the spot and get angry at me when I don't really obey...

about werk - I got this information from a newspaper in Nederland that a person who just got his or her Residence Permit could not TURN DOWN the job or werk that is offered to him or her by the WORK SERVICE BODY ( I forgot how´s it called )....basically the ones that most dutch people wouldn´t like to do!!!! Is this true?

- I've heard about compulsory application, but only like when someone has been jobless for too long, living off social security... I expect that she could apply to other jobs instead if she'd find any, it's rather that the gov doesn't want you to use social security than you fixing all our dirty work. I don't really know about immigration rules, but I don't think many people on this forum will, so I'm posting anyway ;)

hallo - I've also read somewhere that one should bring a present to their neighbor when they visit them for the first time.... or something like that....
MathieuTuesday 31st of May 2005 08:47:56 PM
- Well, here too it's not as strict as you maybe think.. use your own common sense I'd say, you could bring one, would be nice but may be a bit over the top, since you're not familiar with them.. you decide. Occasionally friends bring a bottle of wine or something when they're visiting each other (for example if the people they visit made dinner for them last time, and they want to do something in return). Its common to visit your new neighbours when you've just moved, or inviting them over for a cup of coffee. Maybe you should invite, so you don't have to think about whether or not bring a present :D

Warm meals - My friends could not believe it if I would tell them that I only eat 1 warm meal a day in Holland. Normally from where I come from, I eat 3 warm meals per day...

It's also something that I have to adapt in the future.... and the kind of food that dutch people are eating. I'm glad that I know how to cook because I can cook my own food in the way I like it... for example, I can saute vegetables instead of just boiling them and add cheese before serving....

Just wondering!!!!! - Hallo allemaal,

I've just talked to a Dutchman hier in de Filippijnen. Hij zegt dat his vrouw passed a certain taal examination while they were still in Holland (they are now living here in the Philippines. He said that it was an exam for listening, speaking, written en I forgot the 4th one....

I've heard about these exams while I was in Holland. I am just wondering what's the level of difficulty for these tests.... Or there are different levels of tests that one is asked to take.... especially for buitenlanders?

If you have ideas.... just post it hier

- I wouldn't want to rubbish the Netherlands particularly, because most western European countries are the same economically, but if you come here as a foreigner looking for an easy time you are likely to be disappointed.

I was told that because most Dutch people speak good English (generally true), finding a job without knowing Dutch would be easy (very untrue). If you can work for an American or English company, perhaps, but even then bilingual people are preferred. I work for a Canadian company. The bosses don't speak a word of Dutch, but it was a prerequisite for me.

Money talks here and if you can't support yourself, no-one is going to help you if they dont have to (or unless it would be a human rights violation which the Dutch government is terrified of committing). Also the bureaucracy is quite bad, organisations don't communicate, but it's not as bad as France!

Bedankt Nostromo - Hoi,

I have to wait for 6 months to get the result. Het is erg jammer dat ik ga niet naar school, not allowed to work, not allowed to leave the country..... NIKS TE DOEN!!!!

And the most funny thing that has happened so far, with my desire to be integrated to the society snel, I feel down the staircase of our new huis wearing the KLOMPEN!!!Wat doom van mij... Maar they think that it's funny...

Nou, ik heb minder tijd voor nederlandse taal leren maar I hear it all day long....I might not understand it completely but Ik begrijpt what they want to say to me.... amazing.... Ik ben druk met attaching de behang to the wall, ook painting the woonkamer.... veel te doen bovendien taal leren...
