translation assistance needed :) - hello,

it's definitely a random question, but why no to have a new thread?

I just need your help with a text - I get the meaning, but don't understand it literally:

1. Afgelopen vrijdag was voor het derde achtereenvolgende jaar de 'Hillenraad 100'

'was voor', what does it mean?

2. Hoe presteert het bedrijf ten opzichte van zijn concurrenten?

'ten opzichte'?

3. (...) maar laat nauwelijks aan de buitenwereld zien wat al die inspanningen opleveren.

Let´s see if my english is good enough to explane it:)

1. Afgelopen vrijdag was voor het derde achtereenvolgende jaar de 'Hillenraad 100'[/i]

[i]Was voor[/i] Is not a word combination.

The 'was' is just the past time of 'is' here.
You can also say For example:

Volgende week vrijdag [b]is[/b] voor het derde achtereenvolgende jaar de 'Hillenraad 100'

[i]Next week is, for the third year in a row, the 'Hillenraad 100'[/i]

The word [b]voor[/b] is always used when talking about
A first / second / third time...

Voorbeelden: (examples)
Ik ga voor de eerste keer naar het strand. :)
I will gor to the beach [b]for the first time[/b]

Vandaag ga ik voor de tweede keer naar school.
I will go to school today [b]for the second time[/b]

Nu geef ik het antwoord op jouw tweede vraag:

I don´t know an english word for this...
It means something like 'while comparing it with...´

Voorbeeld:

Een houten tafel heeft voordelen ten opzichte van een tafel die gemaakt is van glas.

[i] A table made of wood has advantages ´while comparing it with' one made of glass[/i]

Ik begrijp jouw vraag 3 niet. (I don't understand question 3) :(

- thank you Gijs, english seems to be just right.

concerning the 1. one - but you do have a verb voorzijn, don't you? I understand it's not the case, but such one exists, right?

3. ok, I'll give you the whole sentence, if you could simply translate it:

Dat is niet te danken aan grote mededeelzaamheid van de onderneming zelf, maar laat nauwelijks aan de biutenwereld zien wat al die inspanningen opleveren.

- 'voorzijn' would mean 'to be before', 'to be in front of'. It's rather trivial really, since it's just a case of compositionality: you pick a preposition and you glue it to a verb and you get a word that means the combination of both :) That way you can also invent your own verbs if you want.
The sentence:
That isn't due to / attributable to / thanks to the good communicativity of the enterprise itself, but hardly shows the outer world what all these efforts produce / yield / lead to.
(laat ... zien = show)

If you not sure about the existence of a word in Dutch,it is possible to check it online in the [b]van Dalen[/b] dictionary. We use it to be sure of the correct spelling of a word.
