Egyptian-Arabic Alphabet: this is from my understanding of the alphabet. i hope it is useful :)
Vowel Sounds
a as in "cat"
e as in "pet"
i as in "tree"
o as it "top"
u as in "to"
ا alif (like in "apple")
د dal (like in "dawn")
ذ zal (like in "zebra")
ر raw (slightly rolled)
ز zaw (like in "zebra")
و we (like in "wing")
the above letters do not change!
ب بـبـب ba (like in "bat")
ت تـتـت te (like in "top")
ث ثـثـث ta (like in "take")
ن نـنـن nun (like in "like in new")
ي يـيـي ya (like in "young")
ج ججج jim (g as in "get")
ح ححح ha (heavy h like in the throat)
خ خخخ kha (like a throat sound)
ع ععع eyn (like in "eat")
غ غغغ ghayn (heavy g like in the throat)
س سسس sin (like in "see")
ش ششش shin (like in "sheep")
ص صصص sawd (like in "song")
ض ضضض dawd (like in "dawn")
ط ططط taw (like in "taught")
ظ ظظظ dhaw (like in "though")
ف فـفـف fa (like in "fan")
ق قـقـق qawf (use as a glottal stop)
ك كـكـك kaf (like in "kit")
ل لـلـل la (like in "let")
م مـمـم mim (like in "meal")
ه هـهـه ha (like in "hat")

one thing i forgot to mention. in some parts of egypt, kawf can be pronounced like G like in "girl". :)

so why do you have a long and short way to write the letter? are they eahc used differently?

sorry for taking so long to respond, but i've been without internet access for the past few days.
the arabic letters have 3 ways to be written. Arabic is written from right to left and i listed the 3 different forms for each letter (from right to left)beginning, continuing, and ending.

ok so lets try some words. i'm using a public computer so i can't write in arabic at the moment. but i will fix it later. for now, i will use the numbers (like in a chat :p)
2 - hamzah
3 - eyn
3* - gheyn
5 - kha
6 - taw
6* - dhaw
7 - ha
7* - kha
8 - Qaf
9 - Sawd
9* - Dawd
8alb -
قلب - Heart (remember Qaf is a glottal stop! so just say "alb")
8alam - 'alam -
قلم - to hit
8wl - ool -
قول - Tell
Maya -
مي - water
i5baar - ikhbaar -
إخبار - news
3la - ala -
على - On
