How do you sound in English? - I have seen this sort of thread in a couple of other forums, and I think it might be useful for those who are practicing their English to have the opportunity to get some feedback on their pronounciation, intonation and general ... speech stuff. :)

I hope that the people who had this idea before me aren\'t offended my me \"stealing\" it! ;)

I\'ve recorded myself, with my personal mixture of Swedish, Scottish and RP accent (listen here!) reading the following passage from the English translation of the novel \"Magic Moon\" (\"Märchenmond\" in German) by W and H Hohlbein:
Kim looked up from his novel at the sound of the front door closing. Marking his place with his forefinger, he clapped the book shut and headed over to his desk.
Notebooks, paper, and an eraser shaped like a miniature soccer ball were piled haphazardly on its polished surface. A pack of colourful plastic straws neatly covered a fresh burn mark - the result of an experiment with a wad of cotton, a glass beaker, and a handful of matches.
If you think that this text is too long, too uninteresting, too difficult or too something else, by all means find another text to read.

Two links to places where you can upload the recording (thanks to Danial):

A good and free computer programme to use:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Oh, I also hope that the admins/moderators won\'t dislike me for daring to start a thread like this in their forum. :D

- :) I like this idea.
I can\'t say I\'m very proud of my English. It might be clear and understanlable, with near total fluency, but I can\'t make it British enough for my own taste. :\\ Too much American films and such around here I guess.
Anyway, if you want to hear me read the following
Hello.
My apologies, but I don\'t know what to say.
If you have any suggestions, let me know, and I might record it for you.
Bye.
The file ought to be downloadable here: http://phoenixpaw.world-ahead.net/phrasebase/english.wav

That\'s all for now. Enjoy.

PS: Yes, I was totally out of idéas of what to say, that I managed to turn into an invitation to send requests of text-snippets to be recorded by me.

Recording - Hi,
Thank you for the opportunity to listen to your voices and English pronounciation. It is interesting to hear different accents.
I am learning English about 3 months every year. Unfortunately there is lack of opportunities to practise my pronounciation. However here is the link to the attempt. Maybe you will hear Estonian accent.
http://www.savefile.com/files/751264
Best wishes.
And you will hear this
\"I am afraid\"
You say that you love rain,
but you open your umbrella when it rains...
You say that you love the sun,
but you find a shadow spot when the sun shines...
You say that you love the wind,
But you close your windows when wind blows...
This is why I am afraid;
You say that you love me too...

- P.S: It is great to hear all these different accents

You have a great voice! I like it! :)
I also like your English melody, I could hear some traces from Estonian, and some of it felt like Finnish... this I like! :)

Myself? My spoken English for me, is like a part of me. It was one of the few things I was really good at in school. I am very sensitive about this, so if I put this here, and someone will say \"You sound SOOO Swedish\" I will get offended.. so maybe I can record and send privately instead, hee hee :-)

- Well, I\'ve decided to take a stab at it just for kicks! :)
You guys tell me if I had a distinctive accent :D

@Itako : I\'m VERY proud of my English too, and my French for all that matter, but I won\'t be offended if someone criticized me, I\'ll take it as a constructive criticism and try to work on my weak points ;)

- @ _ie you do have a little bit of an accent but besides that your English is great!

@ Fawzy WOAH you have a strong Brittish accent! It sounded like I had dropped in the middle of London!

And sadly I can\'t record because I don\'t have a microphone. I am beginning to contemplate buying a Mac just for that. But then you could hear what and American accent sounds like. Sigh oh well.

Really!? :D
Well, I guess I have my teachers to blame for that, I was taught British English at school, maybe it has something to do with the occupation :D

I\'m pretty sure you could just get a mic from any electronics/computer accessories store, I got one for like $2 from Radioshack.
Hola, Ania (lol sorry... but I\'m not used to call you like that yet ). I hope you\'ll be fine soon!

My mother tongue is Spanish. I\'ve lived more than four fifths of my life in Mexico City. Here kids start learning English at age six. Almost never with good results. I studied English 15 years ago (gosh! 15 already???) for almost two years. I\'ve never been to an English speking country.

Like Javi I have never been to any English speaking country. I learnt English in the elementary and secondary school and then at university. My father tongue is Croatian and my mother tongue is Serbian. I live in Barcelona (Spain). So it\'s a mixture of different accents. It sounds half slavic half Spanish. hehehe

Here is my audio file.

How I learned English? All by myself.

I have been to USA only once, and that was in July this year; I stayed for 4 weeks in Maryland.

I started speaking English on a daily basis (mostly) about 8 years ago; it was then when I decided to perfect it.

Hi, my native tongue is German, I started learning English in 1991 at the age of 12. I learned till 1998 in High School. I restarted learning English (and speaking it for the first time since 1998) in october 2005 at a language course in university.
I\'ve never been to an English speaking country so far.
Hi everyone!

A few days back I promised Goran I’d post a file here, but ended up being too busy. Izvini Gorane

Anyways, here it is…to warn you though…I DO have a strong Slavic accent and I speak too fast…

And a bit about myself:
I’ve been in Canada for the past 6 years…coming from Montenegro- native language: Serbian; had English classes through primary and high school back home (never got to speak it there…it was always about grammar) came to Canada thinking I ‘knew’ English well after all those years of studying and 5s in school (5 is the highest grade back home)…and realized that I couldn’t open my mouth. That was a lot of fun…oh boy…don’t even want to think of how I must have looked like while trying to get those ‘fast speaking’ Canadians, ‘ey’

Anyways…it improved by now…hopefully …although my profs still complain sometimes about my article ‘the’…we don’t have it in Serbian and I just end up putting it all over the place in English or what’s worse when I get frustrated I don’t put it anywhere…to confuse everyone around me

I speak a couple of other languages too, but don’t think they helped me much improve my messy Slavic English…came to an English speaking country too late

Enough dolores!
Cheers everyone

EDIT:
Javier, when it starts working again, please check if it\'s any slower. Ufff...it took a lot of effort to say it this slowly...lol

Hey,

excellent idea, Goran

I\'m waiting for all the cruel comments on my accent! You must be cruel, otherwise I won\'t be motivated enough to work on it

I\'ve been learning English seriously for 6 years. Before high school I had some private classes from time to time. My native language is Polish (I wonder if you find my accent similar to Dolores\', as they\'re both influenced by slavic languages). I spent last holidays in England. Oh, yeah, one more thing - I study English now

Hi everyone,

I\'ve been meaning to post this file for a few days now and I finally got round to it...at this unimaginable hour. :D
I\'ve been learning English for...a long time :p; I took it all through secondary school and high-school and then 2 years during university but, to the date, I haven\'t had the opportunity to test it in an entirely-English-speaking environment. Oh, and my mother tongue is Romanian.

So, here is my audio file. Feel free to be as cruel as you want!

What a wonderful idea! I couldn’t resist the temptation although it is the middle of the night and my brother is asleep only a few meters down the corridor. I’ll have to speak real quiet so as to not wake him up, but I think my microphone can handle it if I play around a bit with the settings on my computer. Well, if it doesn’t work I’ll post it tomorrow instead.

Anyway, I’m not a native speaker of English. I live in Sweden and I have studied English since forth grade, which according to my calculations means that I have now practised English nine whole years. Starting in January I will resume my English studies, this time at the university where I study to become a teacher in English.

Right, so here we go… a recording has been made and so far as I can tell the volume should be okay. Here’s the link

Here is my file. Thanks for checking

I\'m Dutch, I started learning English when I was.. 11, 12 or so. About a decade ago. I don\'t talk in English often, only in the rare event I get to meet people from abroad or when I\'m talking in the PB chat (equally rare).
I hate my accent, when I converse it\'s alot worse than in this sound file and I make all sorts of silly mistakes and slips that really annoy me and presumably others as well
I welcome any criticism, it doesn\'t even have to be constructive as I can hardly do anything about it anyway
I know I\'m understandable, but I wonder whether my accent is ugly, OK, funny, that sort of thing
Lol Teup

very good!

I will add mine also, as soon as i know how to create a link to my file. I only managed to upload it to the geocities.com. I am working on it.

*still having fun*

Update:
Ok,I think it should work now.:)

I think i have a great classical dutch accent ->

I don\'t speak english very often, but i was exposed to english on television a lot.

I didn\'t try to imitate a native english speaker too much on my recording..
Well..let\'s hear what i made of it

And to lorelai, It was/is nice to hear your Romanian accent,as it remembers me to a nice holiday I had with a Romanian friend:) Your english sounds very clear to me,no need for someone to be cruel at all

So I guess i\'m swede #2 then. I tried to read it more like you would read a book rather than just \"voicing\" it straight off.

While attending school i\'ve studied english for almost a decade. But since i quit school many years ago, nowadays i depend on the internet and tele for my english practice. I\'m more adept at writing and reading than speaking since i rarely have anyone to talk to.

My english should sound like a total mixup of american and brittish english with a strong swedish accent

Here it is

If that doesn\'t work, try this

A bit late, but here is mine:

http://www.uploadhut.com/upload/99005.mp3

I\'m from South Africa and have been my whole life. My mother tongue is Afrikaans. I started learning English at around age 5, but it really took off in high school when I was exposed to the internet and became friends with an English fanatic who never spoke Afrikaans(despite being from an afrikaans household), and I read alot of English.

I\'m very interested in how my accent sounds, because to me it just sounds like a normal English accent. I don\'t think I have much of an Afrikaans accent(though I might have a South African accent) since I have been mistaken for an English speaker several times.
