Your favorite Word - Lately, I've been quite interested in cool english words. I'm sure everybody has a favorite word, which sounds extremely cool or you simply like it. I think it would be cool to see interesting words. I'll start. ;)

Celerity

~Mihai
AmadeusWednesday 16th of November 2005 04:44:55 AM
- Oblivion

Woah I don't even know what Celerity is! Eheu! 16 years of English got me nowhere...
TerraWednesday 16th of November 2005 06:25:20 AM
Celerity? - wow......I had no clue what that word was. I had to look that up in the dictionary (by the way english is my native, and only language i really know) did you perhaps mean Celebrity, and where did you hear that word.
Mihai17Wednesday 16th of November 2005 01:20:00 PM
- Oooh, sorry. I guess I should've mentioned what it also means. Well, I have MacMillan dictionary, that is pretty useful.

In truth, I heard this word in some computer game (Disciples) and I was simply fascinated by it. Umm... let's see. MacMillan says:"literary great speed" Heh, so yeah, that's kinda what it is. But it sounds really cool.

And oblivion? Cool word. Heard of it quite some times but...Never knew what it truly is.

Oh, and Amadeus, neither did my english teacher know what celerity was. There is also a synonim of it called "Alacrity" but which is slight different. It is mostly used in expression "with alacrity" and it means "quickly and with enthusiasm". Hail to you MacMillan! :D

- Hi, Joziboy, do you actually mean " effervescence"? if it's, i think it means to emit bubbles of gas.
And " evanescence " means to disappear like vapor, i think. This is actually an american band, that's how i know the word:)
Mihai17Thursday 24th of November 2005 09:50:12 PM
- Of course I know Evanescence. It was one of my favorite bands. I kept listening to their album for over 2 years without getting bored (of course, not day by day, but still...). Whisper was an awsome album indeed!

- Can i have a favorite phrase??
Well my phrase of the week is......Woah the Pony!!

Neway my fav words....
damn i don't know how to spell it, and i can't find it in the dictinary, you know the opposite of insomnia.
1) Narcolesy(sp??)
2) Mirror
I just love the way they sound.

3) Film (because i think its so funny that we all obviously pronounce it wrong! The Irish anyway say 'filum'.

Does 'Romanticide' count because i think Nightwish made it up??? Either way i love the word!

Theres probably loads more, i just can't think of them.

- Mine is appetizer
ladysmyrnaSaturday 26th of November 2005 09:27:53 PM
- And mine is "deceit."

Sounds really good!!! I mean nice :D
NateDSaturday 26th of November 2005 09:45:29 PM
- I like the word cellar. It's alternatingly soft then hard; the gradation is very nice, and very English. The atmosphere of it doesn't hurt, either. A cellar is a basement, but it has a different sense to it...it's sometimes an underground shelter. Or, a wine cellar. It has more of an "old" feeling to it.

I also like the word disease for its separable parts: "dis ease" (there are other similar words in English: disorder, distemper, distrain (which is close to 'distress').
Ana_DrobotSunday 27th of November 2005 06:16:26 PM
- My favourite English word is RAINBOW.

ha! Me too! They sell a lot of pink pig-shaped money holders here...

We have something else that's funny, called "white elephant" gifts. They're just really silly gifts, given at casual parties (usually around Christmas). Sometimes people give little white elephants...in goes in stages, though...eventually enough white elephants are given that nobody thinks you're clever anymore if you give one, and they make fun of you. :D
MeryMonday 28th of November 2005 02:47:32 AM
- I first heard the word piggy bank when I was watching Malcolm in the Middle and I immediately liked it :D I had loads of piggy banks when I was younger, but no white elephants. I didn't know what they were before you told us.

- Well, I live in England and speak English everyday - and i'd never heard of Celerity (Swiftness).

You're right Efferevsance means to give off bubbles of gas - like fizzy drinks,
and Evanescence means quickly fading...like the band!

My favourite English words are,
Accentuates - to emphasize something.
Besmirch - to soil, or make something dirty,
Embossom - a fancy word for hug. i.e - i want to embossom you.
Flail - to thrash about - i.e swinging your arms about - arms flailing, (such as what you do when dancing to funky music).
Plumbism - chronic lead poioning.

Anyway, i know very little words in the languages i am learning, but my favourite words in other languages are,
German,
Erdrucken - to crush to death,
and Erwecken - to rise from the dead,
also - Krakenwagen - Ambulance,
and Hummer - Lobster.

and in Urdu,
Saamp - Snake
and Haati - Elephant.

p.s. - welcome to the forums for me.
Ed.
