- It seems that my original message disappeared. I was asking that if respond to something like \"N'est-il pas ici\" with \"Oui\", would someone interpret it as \"Yes, he is here\" or \"No, he is not here\".

I know. I could not see it so I answered your question with an example :)

Well you can not answer a negative question in French with \"oui\". It makes no sense. As to what they would interpret it as I do not know, but I imagine they would be confused! :)

\"Oui, c\'est vrai.\"

\"Est-ce qu\'ils ne viennent pas?\"
\"Oui, c\'est.\"

- Only the first sentence is correct. The second sentence doesn\'t mean anything.

Which one would you interpret it as?

\"Ils ne viennent pas?\"
\"Oui, (ils ne viennent pas).\"
or \"Oui, (ils viennent).\"

Non, ils ne viennent pas.
Si, ils viennent.

No other way makes sense.

But if someone did say \"oui\" I\'d imagine it would be the second form: (ils viennent)
