The language of the Francs - The Francs (who gave their name to France) were a German tribe so they spoke a German language. If you look at the etymology of French words how many words are to find that date back to the time of the Francs then? Is there anyone here who's interested in subjects like these like me?

Je suis dans l'attente de votre respons.

- Par exemple:

The French word ' frais' comes from the West Germanic word 'friskaz' (Old Frisian: fersk, Dutch: vers, German: frisch, English: fresh).

In the language of the Francs it should have been 'fres' (fem:fresche)

- I'm really very interested in etymology, although I know little about French etymology, except for the latin words and expressions. It would be fantastic to read more about this, if you give us that gift. :)

Great!:)

French is a Roman language ofcourse and finding the Latin background is not so hard. The German and Keltic background of the French words is harder to find. French is not my native language so it's hard for me to discouver the German and Keltic background of words.

I'll do my best to give more examples in the next days to make others enthousiastic.

Greetz,

- Le mot Francais 'galloper' à un origine quel est pas Roman.

'Galloper'comes from Germanic (Frankish) 'wala hlaupan' "to run well". In Dutch you could say "wel lopen" or "goed lopen". In Dutch 'lopen' means 'to walk'. There are many words in witch the French changed the first letter 'w' into a 'g'.

- Hi,
this is an interesting question, the Old Frankish Language did not only influence French, but also Spanish, Italian and Portuguese and Latin itself, which quite surprised me, I found it out here :

I can\'t contribute more, since I\'m not an expert in this...

- Hello Dackel,
