- Hello to both of you and
welcome to the Greek forum.
Mmiriam, it is not like people are not interested in learning Greek, there are some people from time to time that post here and want to learn the language but the truth is that with only posting lessons in text (without audio examples ) as i did also makes them loose their starting enthusiasm in a short time. I am thinking this time of how to link audio examples that i'll record with others sites, something like magika did. I don't know how the 'translating phrases' posts are helpfull for people that are starters, like bkooper84 here. Perhaps i should ask her.Have you read the lessons posted in this forum? How do you like it?

Any Greeks Here?? - Hello magica, Panos74 and bkooper84,

i understand the difficulty of learning greek or any other language with just reading text. It is the same for me too now that i am trying to learn Dutch.

An idea that it just came to me is that we can in a way; which i' ll try to think how later, to post songs.greek songs that have nice words and meanings. so people can start from there.

Songs helped me a lot when i was studying italian.
I do not know how easy or how good this idea is.
In this way they can learn simple phrases and words.

And we can provide also links from newspapers and grammar.

So for the moment that is my suggestion to the one who wants to learn greek.
What do you say??

- Γειά σασ!

This site has some great people on it who are willing to help people like me learn Greek. To them, ευχαρισώ πολύ!

As for the best way to learn? On line text and audio lessons are a great help, but really you need to converse with a real person to practice what you have learnt and get the feel for the language.

Not everyone has access to a college that runs classes, but if you have, go for it! Our local college does, and I start on the 28th Jan for a series of 10 weekly Greek classes (which I'm really looking forward to).

If you can't get to classes, find a parter on line to practice with (either using email or one of the voice packages). There are a load of links on this page (it's the website of the teacher who's class I will be taking):-

Miriam, I think you're right about songs; I find it very useful to listen to songs on greek radio. When people talk on radio at full speed I can't follow it at all, but the words go very slowly in a song.

Greek songs to learn Greek - Για σασ!

I'm a Greek learner and I find it a great idea to learn Greek through songs, and I love so much Greek songs. Ok here are the lyrics of a song from Antonis Remos, Μια αναπνοή, a beautiful love song I like very much:

We can start by translating it little by little?

Γεια!

- Nice one, Nizou. The only problem is, I don't know what the tune is! :)
JimDSunday 22nd of January 2006 07:38:55 PM
- OK, I reckon the first line is:

If I had only one wish it would be to see you again

:)

- This is one of my favorites:

Αν είχα μόνο μια ευχή θα ήταν να σε ξαναδώ
If I had only one wish, it would be to see you again

Αν είχα μόνο μια στιγμή θα ήταν να 'σουν εδώ
If I had only one moment, it would be for you to be here

Αν είχα μόνο ένα φιλί σε σένα θα το έδινα
If I had only one kiss, to you I would give it

Αν είχα μόνο μια αφορμή τη θάλασσα σου θα έπινα
If I had only one motivation, your sea I would drink

Αν είχα μόνο μια βουτιά στο κύμα σου πνιγόμουνα
If I had only one dive, in your wave I would drown

Αν είχα μόνο μια ματιά μετά ας τυφλωνόμουνα
If only I had one look, and then let me go blind

Αν είχα τρόπο ο τρελός φεγγάρι θα σε στόλιζα
If crazy me had the ability, the moon I would adorn you with

Αν είχα του ουρανού το φως εσένανε θα φώτιζα
If I had the sky's light, you I would illuminate

Μα έχω μονάχα μια καρδιά που έτσι ξέρει ν' αγαπά
Oh, I have only one heart, that knows how to love

Έχω μονάχα μια ψυχή μες στο δικό σου το κορμί
I have only one soul in your body

Αν είχα μια αναπνοή εσένα θα ανέσταινα
If I had one breath, I would breath it into you

και ύστερα ας πέθαινα
And then let me die.

Αν είχα μόνο μια βραδιά για σένα θα ξενύχταγα
If I had only one night, for you I would not sleep

Αν είχα ένα όνειρο για σένα θα το φύλαγα
If I had only one dream, for you I would save it

Αν είχα μόνο ένα λεπτό σε σένα θα το χάριζα
If I had only one minute, to you I would give it

Αν είχα μόνο μια ζωή για σένα θα τη χαράμιζα
If I had only one life, for you I would destroy it

Μα έχω μονάχα μια καρδια...
Oh, I have only one heart...

- and something else for serbian16 who said in his profile that he born in Istanbul....

You can't talk about Greek language, you are too "small" to talk about this language and about Greek Civilization.

Greece and Turkey had war for many years and I understand that maybe you feel strange with this.

But you must read about this language one day... and then you will understand what the Greek language is.

- Well, apart from the fact that it's about an eagle and the first line mentions feathers, it's got me stumped as far as a tranlation goes!
magicaThursday 26th of January 2006 03:25:23 AM
- it is an allegoric song, the eagle is one man JimD, you can continue your translation

Ah, I couldn't get the sense out of that line. Is the word order unusual to fit in with the song?

I'm finding it difficult to tranlate! I can get most of the individual words, but it's making sense of it that's difficult.
mmiriamSaturday 28th of January 2006 05:21:23 PM
- well basicly it is not feathers it is wings.
I think that wings suits better with the song

but yeah Jim it does not make the best sense ever.
It is a weard song
NizouSaturday 04th of February 2006 04:39:51 AM
- Well I can see that it's interesting to learn Greek by translating Greek songs, here is another one I like so much. My favorite singer, Michalis Xatzigiannis, Krifa (κρυφά):

:-))

vα μηv ξαvαπετάξω To never fly again,
απ' της φωτιάς μoυ τov καπvό From the smoke of the fire
πάλι ψηλά θα φτάσω. Again high I'll fly

ελεύθερoς και δυvατός Free and strong

Secretly in an alley
I saw that which I whished I would not see
You with another man
Resembling a joke (as in the joke is on you) and tragic icon

Painless when a bullet finds him
He is hugged by the sky

My Eagle tear
The soil it will not reach
You will ask for me evenings
And sleep will not catch you (idiomatically: you will be sleepless)

New member - Hi, friends.

I subscribed PhraseBase minutes ago.
I'm Brazilian, but my family came from Kalymnos. I'm a greek dancer in Sao Paulo.
I started to learn three years ago and I made the Basic Program - the only available. Unfortunately, nobody else in my family speaks Greek nor intend to learn. So, it's still difficult.

I agree with the fellows that are posting lyrics. This is an excelent method. This is how I learnt English. I have hundreds of Greek songs in my computer and this help me a lot with the accent and understanding.

Nice to meet you all! And I want to make Greek friends (and from other countries, of course)!

- Hi people,

I\'ve just registered for this. I\'ve been slowly trying to learn Greek for a couple of years (unfortunately I\'ve not had much time recently!). I work with Greeks and have friends over in Greece. The frineds came before the work. Anyway, There\'s always Greek music and I\'ve started to get the CDs I like, e.g.Αντώνης Ρέμος, Γιάννης Πλούταρχος, Μάνος Πυροβολάκης and Νίκος Βέρτης, and then try to find the lyrics and translate them. Then somebody gets caught to correct the translation! I\'ve found this really helps as you tend to pick out common words in the songs, learn more vocabulary and your ability to understand Greek when it\'s spoken seems to improve over time doing this also. Well, it does if you listen to the songs on a regular basis.
