| Hatikva - äú÷åä - ùìåí! As yet I know about as much Hebrew grammar as does the modern Eskimo, so to say my comprehension is sketchy might be understating it a slight... but this is a beautiful song and I\'m tenacious. I spent a long time limping through the dictionary in search of word-for-word definitions, and present the (albeit incomplete) results below, along with the lyrics, romanization, and English translation. Also, there\'s a pleasant recording which I located for download here (see the second link labeled \"Melody (Vocal)\"): http://www.medianetjapan.com/10/travel/vladimir/russian_house/hatikva.html Maybe this stuff is too easy for the learners here, but if anyone has the time and ability, I\'d love to see a detailed explanation of how these lines work grammatically. yom tov! Words as I looked them up (might have messed up!): kol - all od - more, another; still; yet levav - heart p\'nimah - inside, interior nefesh - soul, spirit, person yehudi - Jew homiyah - (flowery) excited, thrilled, aflutter (female) mizrach - east kadimah - forward, onward; in front, in the front, ahead; Forward! Onward! Let\'s go! ayin - spring, well; eye; look, gaze, appearance; tzofiyah - (conjugation?) - to watch, to observe, to witness avdah - loss - (avad) - to become lost hatikva - the hope bat - daughter ; girl; member of group --- aged ... ; containing, comprising alpayim - 2,000 l\'hiyot - since, inasmuch as am - people, nation; crowd, populace chofshi - freely, unrestrictedly eretz - land, earth, country Romanization: kol \'od ballevav penimah nefesh jehudi homijah ulfa\'ate mizrax kadimah \'ajin letsijon tsofijah \'od lo\' \'avdah tikvatenu hatikvah bat shenot \'alpajim lihjot \'am xofshi be\'artsenu \'erets tsijon virushalajim Translation As long as deep in the heart, The soul of a Jew yearns, And forward to the East To Zion, an eye looks Our hope will not be lost, The hope of two thousand years, To be a free nation in our land, The land of Zion and Jerusalem. | |

| - Mine is just a comment... I find \"Hatikva\" so touching and meaningful. Not every nation gets to have a national anthem like this :) | |

| - Indeed! For that matter, it\'s the only anthem I\'ve heard that is played in the minor key. | |
