| Hebrew vocabulary game - Why not starting a little vocabulary game of our own? (after getting some inspiration from other forums :)) It goes like that: each player will post a word that has some kind of associative connection to the previous word. for example: player 1: ים yam (sea) player 2: גלים galim (waves) player 3: רדיו radio and so on.... I'll start: עיר ir (city) | |

| - אשה [ishah] woman or is it ישה? By the way, what is the rule? why some words employ "aleph", others "ayin" and others "yood" for the same phonem? I NEED a logic rule! | |
| avia8 | Thursday 21st of April 2005 03:14:19 PM |
| - אשה is correct ayin is more guttural than aleph. and yood is also pronounced differently (it's isha and not yisha). there's no rule, that's just the way words are written in hebrew. it looks like the same phenome only because there's no analogue to ayin in english. הריון herayon (pregnancy) | |

| - Here's a related word I remember from a David Grossman book: אמחות [imahut] motherhood The book was in English so the above writing is just the product of my imagination :)... I think it should be written like this - Avia, can you help again?? Avia, an innocent question from an ignorant student: tell me please, if you, as a Hebrew speaker, do not know a word you find printed in a newspaper, it means you are unable to read aloud correctly at first sight, since you don't see the vowels? ???!!!! | |
| avia8 | Thursday 21st of April 2005 11:55:18 PM |
| - imahut is אמהות As for reading correctly at first sight - usually when I read names of people or places I can't be sure I pronounce them correctly. In addition many words in hebrew are written the same but have different vowels so sometimes after reading a word I realize I have to read it differntly according to the context. אמהות, for example, can be read imahut or imahot (mothers) . next word for the game: ילד yeled (child, boy) | |

| - don't forget the yood - נסיעה :) מכונית mechonit (car) | |

I'll read a word, than have to go back and revise my pronunciation because of the context or just because I had an incorrect pronunciation. נהג-Driver | |
