| Can you help clarify some sounds? - I am taking beginner hindi. I have noticed that the sounds for the vowells being taught by instructor are different than the sounds described in the \"beginner\'s hindi script\" book. like the \"i\" vowell... in class it was described as the \"ee\" in \"feet\"... but in the book it is described as \"i\" in \"in\"... ? the \"u\" vowell... in class it was \"ooh\" as in \"too\" but the book has it as the \"u\" in \"put\"... ? does anyone have any thoughts on this? is it just normal accent differences? also... i realized when i posted this that i have no idea how one types in devanagari... can anyone point me to a resource that will show me how to use these characters so that I can type in the script? | |

| - The \\\\\\\"i\\\\\\\" sound as in \\\\\\\"in\\\\\\\" is a short vowel and is different from the \\\\\\\"i\\\\\\\" sound as in \\\\\\\"ee\\\\\\\" in feet. Same goes with the two sounds of \\\\\\\"u\\\\\\\" as in \\\\\\\"oo\\\\\\\" in too as opposed to the \\\\\\\"u\\\\\\\" in put. So no, they are not accent differences they are separate characters. the \\\\\\\"u\\\\\\\" which sounds like the \\\\\\\"u\\\\\\\" in put looks like this उ the \\\\\\\"u\\\\\\\" as in \\\\\\\"oo\\\\\\\" in too looks like this ऊ The \\\\\\\"i\\\\\\\" as in in looks like this इ and the \\\\\\\"i\\\\\\\" as in \\\\\\\"ee\\\\\\\" in feet looks like this ई Hopefully this will explain the difference. A great site for being able to type in the script is Hindi Writer found at www.hindiwriter.org and you can download it for free. Also if you would like a good site with video lessons the University of Pennsylvania has those online where a native speaker teaches you all the characters and how to pronounce/write them that can be found at this website: http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/hindi/alphabet/ That site is also completely free. | |
