| Conversation in Hindi - Namaste Okay, I don't really know how that might work, but I think someone has to start the conversation thread. So I just take wildflower's question which was "Aap Kaise hain?" from the sticky-thread and answer it. Main bahut thiik hoon. Aur aap? Corrections to the mistakes I made (and to those I'll make in the future) are very welcome, as are answers and other questions or whatever might come into your mind. | |

(i am absolutely fine OR i am very well. ie you wouldn't say "i am very ok" in english) aap kahaan rahtiN hain?

| - Main Germany me.n rahatii hoon| I live in Germany. perhaps everyone could post the english translation of his Hindi sentence(s), too. two questions: what does chalo mean? something like Let's go on? is it the imperativ of chalanaa? and why did you put an N at the end of rahtiN? I thought it's I for feminine plural and e for maskulin plural. as you can see by my questions I'm really an absolute beginner. aapake kitne bhaaii hai.n? How many brothers do you have? | |

How many brothers do you have?
chalo is the 2nd person (familiar) imperative of chalnaa - to go/move etc, but will be often be translated as "come" or "come on". ie chalo ghar chalein" - come on, lets go home. on the other hand if you are actually ordering someone else it might be translated as "go" or "go on". ie chalo, ghar jaao - go on, go home. you are right about about rahtI - there should have been no N at the end - my mistake - just not used to writing hindi in roman alphabet. i will not answer your question just yet as i do not want to turn this thread into a dialogue between you and me. i hope one of the other students will take up the conversation, and i and others like me can keep an eye on it to correct any mistakes etc. if no one else takes up the conversation, i will take it on.

| - thanks for the explanations. I also hope that there will be some other persons joining this (not yet a real) conversation. I don't like to be the only one who makes a fool of oneself by trying to say something in hindi ;-). And if anyone is able to post in devanagari-alphabet don't hesitate, I'll post in devanagari as soon as i've found a way to do it. | |

OR mere do bhai hain (i have two brothers) OR merii do behenein hain (i have two sisters). of course in a conversational situation, your answer would be perfecly respectable (as it would be in english - "how many brothers and sisters do you have?" - answer "one brother and one sister") 2. where you are talking about possession of objects, you would say for example; mere paas ek car hai - i have one car (there is no point in analyzing this sentence as it will only tend to confuse - just learn it as a paradigm) you forgot to keep the conversation going so i will leave it up to you to post the next question

| - Namaste sahelī(नमस्ते सहेली) (hello friends!) When I type conjuncts in Devanagari, I type the letter for the first part, then "D" on the english keyboard (which stands for a halant) and then the second letter in the conjunct and they are automatically joined. I am not sure if this is universal for all Devanagari layouts, but I am just using the one that came with windows XP. Hope this helps! | |

| namaste! - First. You should type the half letters the following way, the letter, and then the small symbol, like a line below, which is located in the english "d" key of the alphabet, then another connosant letter. The letter before the symbol will become "truncated", only half of it will remain. Second, I want to say something too. मेरा नाम आन्ना है. मैं 28 साल की हूं. मैं बरसेलोना में रहती हूं. मेरा काम परोगरामिंग हैं. मुझे हिन्दी बहुत आच्छा लगता है. | |
