How to Speak - Summary List of Hindi Lessons
*Under Construction*
I think it would be helpful to have a Hindi series of lessons here for the benefit of many students. I am just learning Hindi, so I would like to find a native-speaking pal to work on these Phrase Lessons. If anyone can help, please send me a PM! Dhanyavād!

The lesson templates are being revised to reflect the PhraseBase concept and streamline with audio in translations. We will make the new lessons available as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience. --Anya

- For now you should try to include a section that contains the hindi alphabet so people can at leats learn that. For now anyone can go to http://www.ukindia.com/zhin001.htm to learn the alphabet and some basic grammar.
pretoriousFriday 18th of February 2005 02:01:44 AM
- Even these will help :

http://www.avashy.com/hindiscripttutor.htm (Script Tutor - just basics)

http://www.hindibhasha.com/

http://www.avashy.com/hindisite/weblinks.htm (Links to Hindi resources on the web)

http://www.anu.edu.au/asianstudies/hindi/swah1002/resources.html
(This one came out to be most interactive one i could find, also has good sound bites...but for advance learners)

online dictionary - You find an online dictionary on www.wordanywhere.com

btw: how do I make my links work? Do I have to put the html-code in my postings or can anyone explain what this "automatically parse urls" means and how it works?

typing hindi directly into applications - i have found a utility which allows one to type hindi directly into applications - even here in PB (at least for those using Windows 2000 or above. Unfortunately not for earlier Windows versions)

आप यहां पर भी हिन्दी टाईप कर सकतें हैं

to do this you have to get a utility called baraha direct, which comes packaged with a Hindi text editor called Baraha, available at:
http://baraha.com/downloads.htm.

Instructions for use are given in the help section.

Baraha ಬರಹ - Baraha for Hindi ??
Good news. I use Baraha for Kannada. I realise there is a new version of Baraha. Baraha ಬರಹ is a Kannada word, it means "writing" In Nagariscript बरह, but final a is pronounced.

By the way, is there no possibility to enlarge the Hindi writing here in this forum?
abelkleinThursday 18th of August 2005 03:21:57 AM
baraha - actually baraha is a general indian language text editor including kannada and tamil.
unfortunately. i can find no way of changing text size in PB although there are some limited formatting facilities available (see http://www.phrasebase.com/forum/index.php?action=faq#bbcodes)
it is something we should maybe raise with the administrators.
AviFriday 19th of August 2005 09:29:46 PM
- Itrans is working very well. Another advantage of itrans is that you can put also Roman transcription for learners.
Like: क्या राम भी जा रहा है ?
Kya Ram bhee ja raha hai?
Better would be: Kyā Rām bhī jā rahā hai?

- Thanks for all the websites! Is anyone interested in starting up a conversational Hindi thread?

Namaste!
pretoriousMonday 12th of September 2005 02:11:36 PM
- conversational hindi thread is a good idea....we can put the hindi lines (and there equi. english ones).
NeilaTuesday 13th of September 2005 05:01:13 AM
- I also think that a conversational hindi thread is a great idea. Or we could start games as in other channels to build up our knowledge of vocabulary. I'm only afraid that I won't be able to contribute much in the beginning.
wildflowerWednesday 14th of September 2005 03:24:13 AM
- Well, we can only give it a go!

Namaste, Ap khaise hai?
pretoriousWednesday 14th of September 2005 10:41:06 AM
- Wildflower, we can start a new thread for conversational hindi. May be the moderator would like to keep this thread for publishing of hindi resources explicitly. (As its been made sticky and would be on top all the times)

New in hindi - Hi everyone! i m absolutelky new here, and i really want to learn hindi asap, i ve been trying to learn the devanagari scriot ... i ve been checking out this 3 websites if u r interested in learning some http://faculty.maxwell.syr.edu/jishnu/ http://www.avashy.com/hindiscripttutor.htm http://home.unilang.org/courses/hindi/lesson0.htm fro me the last one is the one that s been more useful. I m really intersted in learning, so if anyone out there is interested too teach me some u ll just make me really happy. but just know that i am really just learning some words for now... and trying to learn the devanagari script. so nothing complicated please!!! we could start with just some words :D... bye u all!
alowynWednesday 28th of December 2005 01:33:17 AM
- I have to admit, I don't completely like UKIndia, even though that's where i started off. It just doesn't explain how to say all the letters.
http://www.avashy.com/hindiscripttutor.htm looks quite good though.
stormgoblinSunday 01st of January 2006 02:16:33 PM
grammar - maybe i missed it. but, i don't see any websites with grammar listed? well, its ok, that's what i'm here for--to complicate your life!
by the way, thanks for your alphabet posts, i agree that i like that unilang alphabet intro better than uk--its more cohesive, i think.
grammar, written by an (apt?) student
http://www.it-c.dk/people/pfw/hindi/

written with devangari, which makes it hard for me to know
http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/dept/mideast/hindi/grammar.

oops, don't you know, it looks as if i have overlooked the fact that unilang has grammar too...it looks a little more comprehensive than that student's grammar. here it is in case you missed that, too...
http://home.unilang.org/courses/hindi/index.htm

thanks, and namaste...

english hindi dictionary - hey guys!!! i found an english hindi dictionary on line wich i think is really good, coz u write the word in english and the translation appears in devanagari but you can also see it in regular writting, and i think it s just great coz we can practice how much we have learned of devanagari and we also learn the new words.... i hope u all find it usefull. and i think is more helpfull than word anywhere, wich i also use a lot.
anyway, heres the name of it:

www.shabdkosh.com/

hope it s great for you all....

a question.... does anyone knows how to type half letters??? i haven t been able to do so, if someone knows please let me know, and guys.... with this dictionary i think we could probably get more people to help us with the topics by words that we want to start, remember the more the better, you can pick a topic and post it... the idea is posted in "a different approach" let s learn all together!!!

bye everyone!!!

UncleBobSaturday 04th of February 2006 09:39:18 AM
- I generally use four dictionaries, the already mentioned Word AnyWhere and Shabdkosh.com, plus http://www.dictionarydictionary.com which has a useful little list of words. My favourite, however, is Logos Dictionary, especially when it has audio for the Hindi word.

To type conjunct characters use the Virama sign (्), which will be on the d key on a QWERTY keyboard.

नमस्ते।

lolWednesday 08th of February 2006 04:17:03 AM
dhanyavaad!! ढनयवाद - thank you so much unclebob for letting me know how to use the half letters.

I didn t noticed that u mentioned the dictionaries, but they r very good... although... I can t seem to understand how the logos dictionary works... seems a bit complicated for me.

and now....

everyone!!!! let s try to keep the forum alive, we need to post more!!! plsss!!! dont u want to learn??? coz i m dying to, and I just wish that I could even have a book, but in my little town there s just no way to find any books in hindi, or dictionaries, and all the info I get , I get it from the internet.... common, let s try to cooperate more!!

I hope that u all try... no matter how little you do.

phir milenge.... thata s used to say meeet you later isn t it??? or how do you say it??? yoon would u mind telling me?? :D

bye!!
gaby24Friday 10th of February 2006 05:53:21 AM
- Hi!.
I know that thata means "bye" in informal way.
And that phir baatein karte hein means "i talk to you soon".:)
gaby24Friday 10th of February 2006 06:02:00 AM
- Hey lol i have just noticed that someone above wrote how to say "I´ll meet you later" = aap se baad me milte hai
lolFriday 10th of February 2006 11:02:07 AM
bahut accha! - super!
I got 2 more phrases now!! :D:D but the sad part is that i didn t think of them myself :( coz i should have known how to say "phir baatein karte hain" but anyway.... at least now I ve got it.

I hope that we can get some more activity in the forum soon.
and now I ll use one of the sentences....

aap se baad me milte hai. ... I ll try to write it in hindi..
आप से बाड मे मीलते हैं.

don t know if it s correct or not, hehe... but I can try!! :D

gaby24Tuesday 14th of February 2006 08:35:36 PM
- namaste!
I wonder....how do you do to type those devanagari characters?.
