Postpositions & oblique case - For me as a beginner in Hindi, the use of postpositions in connection with the oblique case requires a lot of practise. For all those who feel this need for exercise as well, I would like to start a new game. I propose to offer two words for the next player to build a phrase using a suitable postposition.

1. example:
ये किताबें ye kitaben (these books)- बताना bataanaa - to tell
--> मेरा मित्र मुझें इन किताबों के बरे में कुछ बताता है
Mera mitra mujhen in kitabon ke bare men kuchh bataataa hai.
(My friend is telling me something about these books).

2. example:
पंखा pankha (fan) - मेच़ mez (table)
--> पंखा मेच़ पर रखिए
pankha mez par rakhie
(Put the fan on the table)

So my two words to start with are:

गाड़ियाँ gaariyan (cars) - रास्ता raastaa (road)

P.S.: It would be great if some native speaker or advanced learner will make the - surely necessary - corrections...

NeilaThursday 27th of July 2006 03:59:03 AM
- Nice idea, yoak. I\'ll try to play along but with my hindi being everything but good I can only build short sentences like this one:

raaste par bahut gaariyaan hain. - There are many cars on the street.

and the new words are: kutta (dog) - khaanaa (food)
alowynFriday 28th of July 2006 03:21:45 AM
- कुत्तों को खाना दो

kutto.n ko khaanaa do
Give the dogs food.

next words: आदमी aadmii (man), गाना gaanaa (to sing or a song)

YoakFriday 28th of July 2006 10:05:32 PM
- थह लड़ी इस आदमी के लिए गाना गानाता है
yah larki is aadmii ke lie gaanaa gaanaataa hai
This girl is singing a song for this man.

next words:
पहाड़ें pahaaren - mountains
छुट्टी chhuttii - holiday

Hey Neila and Alowyn, thank you for joining in!
alowynSaturday 29th of July 2006 12:31:32 AM
- hamarii chuTTii par ham pahaaro.n me.n kho gaaye

On our holidays we got lost in the mountains.

Next words:
sapna - dream
pyaar - beloved
NeilaSaturday 29th of July 2006 10:21:29 PM
- मैंने पिछले रात अपने प्यारे दोस्त को सपने सें देखा।
mai.ne pichhale raat apane pyaare dost ko sapane me.n dekhaa.
Last night I dreamed of my beloved friend.

next words:
रात (raat) - night
सोना (sonaa) - gold/to sleep

Thanks to the Nikhilkizvas for the corrections. I hope I corrected all my mistakes and didn\'t overlook a correction you suggested.
alowynSaturday 29th of July 2006 11:28:01 PM
- um Neila I\'m not sure about this, but isn\'t \'Pyaar\' only a noun? Isn\'t the word you need \'pyaare\' (obl) or \'pyaari\'?
Other than that, keep going ;) you\'re doing fantastic.

अगर मेरी सनम मेरे बाँहों में नहीं लौट जाएगी, तो यही रात सोने के बिना होगी
Agar meri sanam mere baaho.n me.n laut jayegi, to yehii raat sone ke bina hogii.
If my beloved will not return into my arms, then this night will be sleepless.

next words:
चन्दChand - moon
बादल baadal - cloud
YoakSunday 30th of July 2006 01:56:56 AM
- Wow, Alowyn, you\'re a Hindi poet..!

इस रात को कुछ नहीं देखता हुँ क्योंकि चन्द के आगे बादल चलते हैं
is raat ko kuchh nahin dekhta hun kyonki chand ke aage baadal chalte hain
Tonight I do not see anything because there are clouds moving before the moon.

Correction of the sentence:
आज रात कुछ नहीं दिख रहा है क्योंकि चन्द के आगे बादल हैं
tonight= आज रात aaj raat (not: is raat)
कुछ नहीं दिख रहा है kuch nahin dikh rahaa hai = \"nothing can be seen\" is better than \"I can’t see anything\"
बादल चलते हैं is not Hindi usage, it is better simply to say बादल हैं baadal hain \"there are clouds\";
or one could say बादल मँडरा रहे हैं baadal manDraa rahe hain \"clouds are hovering\"
Thank you, Nikhil, for your hints!
:)

जंगल jangal - forest
पशु pashu - animal

NeilaSunday 30th of July 2006 06:37:41 PM
- @alowyn: I don\'t know (pyaar). The problem is that I need at least two dictionaries to form a sentence: first a german-english and then a hindi-english one (and I have only wordanywhere.com for the last task), so there might be some translation mistakes in it... But I\'ll correct the things you mentioned. Thanks

हर सोमवार को मेरा परिवार और मैं जंगल में सौर करते हैं जहाँ हम बहुत पशु देखते हैं।
har somavaar ko mera parivaar aur main jangal me.n saur karte hai.n jahaa.N ham bahut pashu dekhate hai.n.
(every sunday my family and I take a walk in the forest where we see many animals.)

new words:
किताब kitaab - book
पलंग pala.ng - sofa/couch
alowynSunday 30th of July 2006 09:57:22 PM
- Waah, that\'s very impressive then Neila! Don\'t stop, you\'re doing really well with Hindi! btw, have you tried shabdkosh.com - i found it\'s somewhat better.

@ Yoak - Thanks... Bollywood mujhe jaadu kiya! ^_^ [Bollywood enchanted me]

अब कि मैने नया घर ख़रीदा, मुझे कोई किताब पलंगों-वलंगों के बारे में चाहिए।
Ab ki maine naya ghar khariidaa, mujhe koii kitaab pala.ngo.n-wala.ngo.n ke baare me.n chaahiye.
Now that I\'ve bought a new house, I need some book about sofas and that sort of stuff.

Next words:
धूप - dhuup - sunlight
पेड़ - peR - tree
YoakMonday 31st of July 2006 01:23:43 AM
- मेरी खिड़की के बाहर ये पेड़ धूप को मेरे कमरे में आने मना करते हैं
meri khirkii ke baahar ye per dhuup ko mere kamre men aane manaa karte hain.
These trees outside my window inhibit the sunlight from coming into my room.

pooh.. actually I\'m not advanced enough to build such a sentence... I wonder if it is correct? (-- Luke..???)

Correction:
मेरी खिड़की के बाहर ये पेड़ धूप को मेरे कमरे में आने रोकते हैं
मना करना
manaa karnaa = to stop someone
रोकना roknaa = to prevent, to stop
The latter should be used in this context.
Thanks for the advice, Nikhil!!
:)

NeilaWednesday 16th of August 2006 07:12:29 AM
- hm, although we play without native speakers, it would be sad if that thread would die after having lived for only such a short time.
So here are two new words:

नाम (naam) - name
लिखना (likhanaa) - to write
alowynWednesday 16th of August 2006 04:45:45 PM

next words:
Bhaarat - India
kal - yesterday
NeilaWednesday 16th of August 2006 05:48:28 PM

Yesterday was a holiday in india, it was Independence day.

new words:
मेला (melaa) - fair
शहर (shahar) - town
YoakThursday 17th of August 2006 11:12:48 PM
- Danke schön, Neila. Thanks for picking up the thread again!

अगले महिने हमारी शहर में एक बड़ा मेला होगा।
agle mahine hamaarii shahar mein ek baraa melaa hogaa
Next month, there will be a big fair in our city.

Correction:
अगले महिने हमारी शहर में एक बड़ा मेला लगेगा
(... melaa lagegaa)
मेला लगना melaa lagnaa \"to organise a fair; a fair to happen\" is an idiomatic expression
Thank you, Nikhil!

NeilaThursday 24th of August 2006 06:47:38 AM
- Cool, that you participated in this game. I had not enough time over the last days...
okay, corrections: I\'d say hai because it\'s only one statue. hai.n is for plural but the rest looks okay to me. but remember: I\'m only a beginner too.

एक लाल कली और बहुत पीली कलियाँ फूलदान में मेज़ पर हैं।
ek laal kalii aur bahut piilii kaliyaa.n phuuladaan me.n mez par hai.n.
one red flower and many yellow flowers are in a vase on the table.

पिता (pitaa, masculin)- father
मकान (makaan, masculin) - house
gaby24Friday 25th of August 2006 08:17:34 PM
- Thanks for the corrections Neila, i will stick on simple setences till i feel confident to write something else.I have noticed that at the end of your sentence you put a single bar. What does it mean? Does it work like a period?

मकान में मेरा पिता है
makaan men mera pitaa hai
my father is in the house

New words:
दूकान (duukaan) shop
मैला (maila) dirty

NeilaSaturday 26th of August 2006 04:47:56 AM

मैंने उस दूकान से कुछ नहीं ख़रीदा क्योंकि वह बहुत मैली थी।
mai.ne us duukaan se kuchh nahii.n khariidaa kyonki vah bahut mailii thii.

New words:
गगन (gagan) -sky
तारा (taara)- star
PetraThursday 07th of September 2006 03:46:36 AM
- I think that is because we are hardly able to form sentences, only very easy ones and even that takes hours (at least I need a very long time). Another point is that it\'s not that easy to get good hindi learning ressources. anyway, with Jeezt as the Hindi Admin, we will at least have the word and phrases section translated soon. Thanks in advance for that, jeet :D

आप रात में बहुत तारे गगल में देख सकते हैं।

It is known about that man that he never beats his son.

Correction:
उस आदमी के बरे में [हमें] यह मालूम है कि वह अपने बेटे को कभी नहीं मरता!
हमें
hamen \"to us\" could be inserted, but it’s no must.
But then यह yah has to be added to indicate „the fact that“ (this corresponds to the \"it\" at the beginning of the English sentence).
The है at the end should be omitted.
Thanks for your corrections, Nikhil!
:)
