| - I went to Bollywood 3 years ago, and can't enter a theater because U have to wait 3 days before a place was awailable.. :( I would have understand nothing, but Indian movies are quite easy to understand, even without speach (actors are very "expressive"). I would have like to hear people in the movie theater (very sensitive from what I heard about). So I watch my only Indian movies in France, and not that much. Indian industry is not distributed in France, except in some Art Movie Theaters... But watching Indian movies could be a good idea... Are all the movies in Hindi? or different languages are used? If someone could also give me some good titles. Thx :) Tier | |

| - On hindi movies: Not all movies made in India are hindi. Surprisingly in South India hindi movies are not that popular. South India has its own movie mania with Tamil and Telgu language movies. Some of the movies there make better box office collection then hindi movies in Bombay/Delhi. Hindi movies are known to international audiance coz it is India's offical language, but movies in different languages includes Tamil, Telgu, Kannada and Malyalam in south India, punjabi and Bhojpuri movies in North india, Bangali films in east among others. Some titles (for hindi), over the years : DDLJ, Kal Ho na Ho, Dil Chahta hai, Sholay, Laggan (was Oscar Nominated), K3G... | |

| - Has anyone seen Paheli yet?? Watching hindi movies with subtitles and reading the songs is very helpful to me.I especially luv Kuch Kuch Hotai Hai! 'Tumpaasse aye,yun muskurayee, tum nera jane kya, Saapne de khaye, aabto mera dil, jaane ka sota hai kya karoon ha ye.......Kuch kuch hota hai' Did i sing gud? Does Kuch kuch hota hai mean 'Somethings happened to my heart'? Because throughtout the movie it seems like its used to say that just anything has happened. | |

| - yes i have seen Paheli - it's complete drivel | |
| Neila | Saturday 16th of July 2005 04:07:47 AM |
| paheli - I\'ve seen Paheli, too. Although I don\'t really know what drivel means, I guess it wasn\'t a compliment for the film. I liked Paheli. Rani looked great, but I absolutely dislike SRK\'s moustache. However, I don\'t know what it\'s like in your countries, but in Germany one can buy the DVDs with english subtitles at almost every indian shop for some Euros. So I guess i\'ll spend much money on DVDs over the next weeks/months, cause I really like Hindi films and that\'s the reason why I want to learn Hindi. | |

| - Yaay! More Bollywood fans! It's been a rather amusing, really - just watching people's reactions when i tell them this. A new (indian) girl at my school once glimpsed my infamous file, which is covered in pictures of stars. She stared at it for another ten minutes as if it had made some strange noises often heard from the stomach of a bear fresh out of hibernation. I've also just finished a drama project in which we had to write a five-page essay on any aspect at all of the performing arts (including films). Guess what i've done... I've picked up quite a bit of Hindi from watching so many films, but Filmi Hindi isn't hardly enough to speak on a day-to-day basis (unless i suppose you have a Hindi-speaking lover) Paheli was sooo cute! i loved it. Some of the songs were also great. Has anyone here seen Salaam Namaste? i've heard it's good, i think i'll see it... if i find time/money after the upcoming BW festival in cinemas. | |

| - Really?Salaam Namaste supposed to be gud?? The 1st thing i thought wen i 1st saw the preview was.....uumm ok tis movie looks bit dodgy, but i suppose ts becoz it doesnt star my beloved Shahrukh. I must say-Saif Ali Khan looks fit these days innit? Preity Zinta one of my fav actresses-so i suppose i cood watch it(if i eva get the chance to find the movie) | |
| anabel | Monday 19th of September 2005 11:02:53 PM |
| - well, i like indian films but not just typical bollywood films and a shame on germany....only showing srk films on tv, as if he is the only actor india has....whatever, i have seen some black and white indian films, pretty old what black and white already says, but the music was great, many ghazals and classical things...also have to recommend them! but what i dont understand....why are the movies the only reason to some people for learning hindi? | |
| alowyn | Tuesday 20th of September 2005 02:41:28 AM |
| - i tend to agree, Anabel - but let's look at the facts. Most of the box office hits have SRK in them. When i look at recommendations given to me by friends, they all have King Khan as well. He's definitely not the only actor in Bollywood, but he's certainly a sun that outshines most stars. I personally prefer other stars, particularly Aamir Khan - but overall, internationally, SRK is the current superstar. I really do wonder who will take his throne when he departs. As for other films: i've watched three Kollywood (Tamil) films (my access is very limited) and two of them (Alai Payuthey and Minnale) seem like the basic Bollywood. And are you really surprised that people only learn Hindi to do away with subtitles? It's not exactly the most-spoken language around. Even in India there's quite a struggle between it and Tamil, each trying to prove they're the bigger language. | |
| anabel | Tuesday 20th of September 2005 06:46:13 PM |
| - at least i can say something in which i totally agree, Aamir Khan!!!!!!!!!:D good taste you found! | |
| alowyn | Tuesday 20th of September 2005 11:04:51 PM |
| - Ah, another Aamir fan at last! have you seen The Rising/Mangal Pandey? | |
| anabel | Tuesday 20th of September 2005 11:38:24 PM |
| - dont call me a fan! i think iam fan of noone! and i havent seen that film but iam not one of these fanatics. i like him as actor! thats it. and i think he simply matches well in all kinda roles, at least in those where i have seen him acting. | |
| Baby_J | Wednesday 21st of September 2005 03:30:13 PM |
| - Ana Ana ana!.......here is my explanation anyways.I used to be naive and more ignorant than i am today(abt india as a country).I used to think India was just like Vietnam or any other 3rd world country. Not much happening unlike in others,in terms of technology, economic growth. My mum was da one who introduced me to bollywood films;we had indian neighbours wen i was younger-and my mum wood often borrow sum of their hindi movies, but i was too young to appreciate the culture thru the films.Afta watching Main Hoon Na(my 1st srk movie)>i started to watch more movies(sum starring,or not starring him). Afta getting the concept of a Bollywood in india ,i saw how essentric the culture is,begun to understand the traditions and believes of india from the movies. And now i know my perception of india was totally wrong. I know ur saying dat its pretty shallow to be strung into just the glamourous bollywood industry>and not da culture of india-but the truth is I AM interested and amazed by India's ppl and culture apart from Bollywood. The films were the 1st things dat attracted me to India in the 1st place-but apart from the films i am now looking at the culture & religions more closely. | |

| - Ok, sorry Anabel... But i actually define that as a fan. I'm not fanatic about any actor myself (only BW as a whole) and i really don't care about the rumours/scandals around him or any actor/actress - to me, they're just there to convey a character. However, if i had a choice between two films, i would probably go for the one in Aamir Khan. What more does a fan need to do? Baby J, i know what you mean - after being introduced to Bollywood i quickly became fascinated in Indian culture. I fund that all the unanswered questions i had about my home religion were answered by Hinduism. I'm also fascinated by Indian culture and people, and just like you, the films acted as a gateway to this vibrant culture. Certainly, you can't take Bollywood out of India, and i think it's inevitable for a fan to be brought into Indian culture. But you're so lucky that your mother shares your interests!!! i'm the only one in my house that enjoys BW films, and it's not been the most pleasant experience. | |

| Neila | Friday 30th of September 2005 07:27:27 PM |
| - Oh, lucky you. Is it already available with English-subtitles in Johannisburg? I tried to buy the DVD yesterday but they told me that it will take some more weeks till Salaam Namaste will be available with english subtitles :-( | |
| alowyn | Friday 30th of September 2005 10:51:51 PM |
| - Happily, Neila, it is... down here the films are always subtitled. I suppose it's probably because many South African Indians are of Tamil origin. We only get a few Kollywood films, though... But it's certainly worth the wait. Or what you might want to do is go now to an unsubbed film to test your Hindi. I think it should be more or less easy to follow, and you can always watch it again... Hum Tum was such a fantastic film! I absolutely adored it. the cartoons were so cute! | |
