| - i am going to india in october to visit family and friends! main october mein india jaa rahi hoon, apne rishtedaaron (relatives) aur doston se milne. i cannot wait till i go as i miss them all. no exact translation for "i cannot wait" but you could say: main jaane ko bahut bechain hoon, sab ki bahut yaad aa rahi hai. (i am very impatient to go..). or main jaane ko bahu utaavali hoon,....... (i am very eager to go,........) best wishes ak | |

| Devnagari script - sarz, you will find the hindi script on the following weblink: http://www.avashy.com/hindiscripttutor.htm clicking on the individual letters will show the romanised transliteration, and you will also be able to see how to write the letters, and how to pronounce them by clicking on the appropriate buttons. Let me know if you have any questions. | |

(you will have to scroll down the screen quite a long way before you get to those sections.) i presume you are using windows xp so use the instructions under that section once you have done this you will see the language toolbar in the bottom right hand corner of your screen (the letters "EN"). You can now type in hindi in either Notepad or Microsoft Word, provided you are using Office 2003 (but not earlier versions I think). The way you do this is as follows: -open Word (or if you do not have the right version of that, use Notepad) -click on the language toolbar. You will see a choice of languages "EN" or "HI". -select "HI" -you will now see a mini toolbar above your system tray in the bottom right corner of the screen. (showing the letter "H", an icon of a keyboard etc.) - click on the keyboard icon -select "hindi transliteration" you should now be able to type in hindi, more or less as you would expect. for example to type the word "hindi" you would actually type "h-i-n-d-e-e" (remember the second "i" in hindi is long). of course you must fully understand how the devnagari script works before you will be able to do even this. unfortunately, as far as i can tell you can only type directly in hindi into Word (Office 2003) and Notepad using this technique. So you cant type an email, for example, directly in hindi. anyway, you should have enough to be getting on with. let me know if you have any problems. | |
