Word linking! - Since, as was mentioned in a separate thread, this forum was growing stale, and not many of us have enough knowledge of Hindi, I thought we could at least pool our vocabulary. And what better way than through this game!

So, just to remind everyone of the rules. I'll start off with a word (in Hindi). The next person must post a word that is linked to the first word, and the next person must link to the word that the second person posted, etc.

So for example, if I had posted the word 'food', the next person could post, 'plate', and the next person, 'crockery' etc. - but, of course, all these words ought to be in Hindi.
Could everyone please post the transliteration AND translation, and if anyone else can, it would be great to have it in Hindi script (Devanagari)

So, let's begin!

first word: one that all you BW fans will recognise...

दिल
dil
Heart

marsha_cupTuesday 06th of December 2005 04:59:48 AM
I'll give this one a try... - Allright, I've just started learning Hindi a few months ago, and I'm learning on my own, so I'm a little weak on vocab, but this sounds like a great idea... :)

प्यार करना
pyaar karnaa
to love

Oh, and one more question on dil... is there a different word for the anatomical vs. "romantic" heart, or are they more or less the same word?

@alowyn: I googled for complex script and all I found seems to be saying that complex script is something for WinXP only. Unfortunately I'm still using Windows 98se. I tried some "transliterators" like Itranslator 99 or Baraha. They work with microsoft word but unfortunately not with this forum.

@alowyn: I found sunanaa/sunna in TYH and in wordanywhere.com, in both it's written with two full n -> in Itrans (that's what I (try to) use because I can't write devanagari on my computer) I have to put an a between the n and the n else it is an half n and a full n, do you understand what I want to say? I guess we are talking about the same word but my problem with devanagari messes everything up. sorry for that.

billigulabii: What operating system are you using? If you can see the Devanagari script then you just need to install an input method. If not, you need to install fonts as well.

Windows 2000
Start > Control Panel > Regional Options. In the General tab there is a section "Language settings for the system", scroll down the list and make sure Indic is selected.
Start > Control Panel > Keyboard. Select "Input Locles" tab and click Add. Look for Hindi in the first drop down.

Windows XP
Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options.
Select the "Languages" tab and make sure the checkbox "Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)" is checked.
Click the Details... button. Then in the "Text Services and Input Languages" dialog click the Add button. Look for Hindi in the first drop down.

Mac OS X
System Preferences > International. Select the "Input Menu" tab and look for Devanagari in the list.

You can see the keyboard layouts at Windows Keyboards Layouts, or you can use the on-screen keyboard, Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard.

Kal tak mein sab khojunga (Till tomorrow i will search everything).

But you should keep asking if that doesnt satisfy you.
