| Irish Practice Game - Dia duit a chairde! I would like to start a thread of Irish sentences to help people learn. I will start. It's simple, post a sentence or question, anything you want. If you want to ask questions, then ask questions in Irish, if you can. Then the next person should respond in Irish. Obviously the point of the game is to use what you know! Please add English translation for beginners. Go raibh maith agat! Thanks! My sentence: Cad é mar atá sibh? :D How are you (plural)? | |
| chelle73 | Sunday 06th of March 2005 12:34:37 PM |

| Irish Practice game - Ta me abalta caint (beagan) as gaeilge (I am able talk (a little) in Irish Cen fios ata ar Eireann ar gach daoine (what knowledge of Ireland has everyone? | |
| chinita96 | Monday 07th of March 2005 01:20:38 AM |
| - Corrections Chelle - it should be C'ainm atá ort? This literally translates to "What is the name on you?", and "ort" means "on you". "Tort" is not a word, atleast I don't think. Good job! Kamil - "An labhraíonn tú Gaeilge?" is literally "Do you speak Irish?" Another way to say it is "An bhfuil Gaeilge agat?", which is more commonly used. This means literally "Is Irish at you?/Do you have Irish?" Excellent job! Ní raibh a fhios agam go bhfuil Gaeilge agat! I didn't know you have Irish! :P Ian - Instead of "Tá mé ábalta caint (beagán) as Gaeilge", I would just say "Tá beagán Gaeilge agam." It's short and simple :) I´m not too sure about the way you wrote "Cén fios atá ar Éireann ar gach daoine?" My take on it would be "Cad é an t-eolas atá ag gach daoine ar Éirinn?" (literally "What it the knowledge is at everyone on Ireland?"). Good job! Tá eolas mór agam ar Éirinn! Literally "Big knowledge is at me on Ireland!" but in English "I know a lot about Ireland!" Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí? Where are you in your living?/Where do you live? | |
| chelle73 | Tuesday 08th of March 2005 12:28:15 AM |
| - Is as Na Stáit Aontaithe mé. (I am from the United States) Cad é an tslí bheatha atá agat? (What do you do for a living?) | |
| Alex | Tuesday 08th of March 2005 12:29:01 AM |
| - Is feighlí feasa mé I'm a knowledge overseer. (Database Administrator) I've also heard Bainisteoir bunachar sonraí database manager. An bhfuil gluaisteán agat? Do you have a car? | |
| chinita96 | Tuesday 08th of March 2005 11:08:55 AM |
| - Tá carr nua agam :D A new car is at me, or I have a new car. An maith leat tae? Do you like tea? | |
| Kamilos_ | Wednesday 09th of March 2005 05:20:45 AM |
| - is breá liom tae (I love tea) Céard tá ar siúl ag an bpictúrlann faoi láthair? (Phrase: What is showing at the cinema now?) | |
| chinita96 | Thursday 10th of March 2005 10:36:02 AM |
| - Corrections Kamil - "Céard atá ar súil ag an bpictúrlann faoi láthair?" should be "Céard atá ar súil ins an phictiúrlann fá láthair?" (What is on an eye in the movie presently). Be careful here, tá is the present tense of the verb "to be", used in statements, while atá is used in questions. Tá Million Dollar Baby ar súil ins an phíctiúrlann anocht. Literally: Million Dollar Baby is on an eye in the movie tonight, or in just plain English: Million Dollar Baby is showing in the movie tonight. An bhfuil an lá go deas inniu? Is the day nice today? | |
| chelle73 | Thursday 10th of March 2005 11:45:29 AM |
| - Tá lá breá ann ach gaofar. (It's a fine day but windy.) An bhfuil tú ag obair inniu? (Are you working today?) | |
| diarmuidh | Friday 11th of March 2005 12:00:30 AM |

| Alex | Friday 11th of March 2005 12:32:03 AM |
| - Beidh mé ag múin i Skype anocht. I'll be teaching in Skype tonight. Cad a dhéanfaidh tú ar an deireadh seachtaine? What will you do on the weekend? Let's not forget to put the english translations in, folks, for the new learners who might happen by. | |
| chinita96 | Saturday 12th of March 2005 07:26:21 AM |
| - Accents For reference, I will add Diarmuid's accents for him. Accents are important, without an accent, you can change the meaning of the word. So this is just for reference. Good to see you playing D! - Tá me san oifig! Ach i gceann nóiméad beidh me imithe! - Cad a dhéanfaidh tú anocht? Déanfaidh mé staidéar ar an Ghaeilg ag an deireadh seachtaine seo chugainn más féidir liom. I will do studying on Irish this weekend if I can :D An maith leat ceol traidisiúnta? Do you like traditional music? | |
| chelle73 | Sunday 13th of March 2005 04:17:55 AM |
| - Tá mé leat ceol traidisiúnta. (I like tradtional music.) An bhfuil tú pósta? (Are you married?) | |
| diarmuidh | Monday 14th of March 2005 10:35:06 PM |
| - Nilim posta fos! ach ta me geallta do cailin alainn! I'm not married yet! But I am engaged to a lovely girl! Ar maith leat dul go hEireann do La fheile Padraig? agus cad a dheanfaidh tu ar an la? Would you like to go to Ireland for Saint Patrick's day? and would you do on that day? sorry about the accents guy! | |
| chinita96 | Monday 14th of March 2005 11:24:27 PM |
| - Corrections: Chelle - "Tá mé leat ceol traidisiúnta" is literally "I am with you music traditional". Be careful here, leat = with you, and liom = with me. To correctly say "I like traditional music" it would be "Is maith liom ceol traidisiúnta." Good job, it's always good to try and answer. You will never know if it's right until you try and someone corrects you. That's what I'm here for :) Accents: Nílim pósta fós! Ach tá mé geallta do cailín álainn! Ar mhaith leat dul go hÉireann do Lá Fhéile Pádraig? agus cad a dhéanfaidh tú ar an lá? Iontach mhaith a Diarmuid! Cool Diarmuid! It's ok about the accents. I just like to add them so people know where they go. Tá súil agam go mbeidh mé go hÉireann lá amháin! Labhróinn mé Gaeilge le gach duine! Lá Fhéile Pádraig Shona Duit! I hope that I will go to Ireland one day! I would speak Irish to everyone! Happy Saint Patrick's Day to you! Cad é an t-am atá sé, le do thoil?(U) or Cén t-am é, más é do thoil é?(C) What time is it, please? | |
| chelle73 | Tuesday 15th of March 2005 02:31:23 AM |
| - Tá sé leath i ndiaidh a haon a chlog. (It is half past one o'clock.) An bhfuil tú ag ithe anois? (Are you eating now?) | |
| chinita96 | Wednesday 16th of March 2005 01:02:33 AM |
| - Tá! Tá mé ag ithe núdail agus ag ól tae. Tá mé ag mo lón :) Yes! I am eating noodles and drinking tea. I am at my lunch :) Cad é an aois atá tú?(U) or Cén aois atá tú?(C) What age are you? | |
| diarmuidh | Wednesday 16th of March 2005 05:29:50 PM |
| - Ta fiche is a seacht bhliain d'aois agam! I'm 27 Cad e an bia is fearr leat? What is your favourite food? | |
| chelle73 | Wednesday 16th of March 2005 10:59:06 PM |
| - Is maith liom (enchiladas?). (I like enchiladas.) Cad é na teangacha atá agat? (What languages do you speak?) | |
| chinita96 | Thursday 17th of March 2005 11:52:52 PM |
| - Ummm.. Unfortunately, I don't know the word for enchiladas in Irish :P I don't know if there is one. I will have to check on that. Enchiladas might just have to be the word for now. Tá Béarla agus Spáinnis líofa agam, ach tá mé ag foghlaim Gaeilge Chonnacht agus Gaeilge Uladh. Tá giota beag Fraincis, Ollainnis, Iodáilis, Ioruais, Polainnis, agus Rómáinis agam. Is fearr liom Gaeilge Uladh! English and Spanish are fluent at me, but I am learning Connaught Irish and Ulster Irish. A wee bit of French, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, and Romanian is at me. I love Ulster Irish! *There is no verb "to have" in Irish, so we use an expression: Tá + ... + agam. (literally, is ... at me) This expression is also commonly used to express you speak a language, or you have a language. Mar shampla (for example), tá giota beag Gaeilge agam = I speak a wee bit of Irish. Agus tusa? :P And you? *Tusa is the emphatic form of tú. In English we just stress the word in speech, in Irish we add to the word, so mé becomes mise, tú becomes tusa. | |
| chelle73 | Friday 18th of March 2005 01:23:17 AM |
| - Tá Béarla líofa agam, ach tá mé ag foghlaim Gaeilge :), Fraincis, Eabrais agus Spáinnis. (I speak English fluently, but I am learning Irish, French, Hebrew and Spanish.) An bhfuil dearthaireacha agus deirfiúracha agat? (Do you have brothers and sisters?) | |
| Alex | Saturday 19th of March 2005 01:17:55 AM |
| - Níl. Níl dearthaireacha ná deirfiúracha agam. No. I have no brothers nor sisters. An maith leat fíon nó beoir? Cén sórt? Do you like wine or beer? What kind? | |
| chinita96 | Sunday 20th of March 2005 04:49:37 AM |
| - Is fearr liom fíon bán I prefer white wine. Cad é an chuma atá ort? What do you look like? | |
| Alex | Sunday 20th of March 2005 05:01:21 AM |
| - Tá cuma práta orm. Cén sórt céist a bhí sin? I look like a potato. What kind of question was that? An cuimhin leat cathain an rang Gaeilge a tharlaigh sa Phrasebase? Do you remember when the Irish lesson happens on Phrasebase? | |
| chelle73 | Monday 21st of March 2005 11:25:45 PM |
| - Tá rang Gaeilge a tharlaigh sa Déardaoin agus Sathairn. (The Irish lesson happens on Thursday and Saturday.) ((That's prob. wrong:D)) Imríonn tú cispheil? (Do you play basketball?) | |
| chinita96 | Wednesday 23rd of March 2005 09:51:03 AM |
| - Corrections Tá is the present tense of the verb "to be". So, you can't use that here. In this case, you would use the habitual present for something that happens all the time. Also, "sa" means "in the", with days, you have to use "ar" meaning "on". So, the correct translation would be something like this. The Irish lessons are on Thursdays and Saturdays = Bíonn ár rangannaí Gaeilge ar an Déardaoin agus ar an tSatharn. Good job though! Ní suim agam sa spórt. Is fearr liom bheith ag caint ar an idirlíon agus bheith ag foghlaim Gaeilge :P I have no interest in the sport. I prefer talking on the internet and learning Irish :P Cé leis an leabhar Buntús Cainte? Who owns the book Buntús Cainte? | |
| Alex | Wednesday 30th of March 2005 11:36:06 PM |
| - Is liom an leabhar sin (I have that book.) An maith leat úrscéalaí? (Do you like novels?) | |
| chelle73 | Thursday 31st of March 2005 12:02:45 AM |
| - Is maith liom úrscéalaí. (I like novels.) Cá bhfuil tú ag dul? (Where are you going?) | |
| Thursday 31st of March 2005 07:25:22 AM | |
| - Cad é mar atá sibh? How are ye? Bá mhaith liom ag dul go hÉirinn am ar bith. I would like to go to Ireland any time. Bá mhaith liom seinm ceol traidisiúnta ar mo chláirseach ar seisiún maith i Baile an Chaisleáin. I would like to play traditional music on my harp in a good session in Ballycastle. Not to sure if I got that right but I had a good stab at it! an maith sibh ceol traidisiúnta? Do ye like traditional music? | |
| Josey_10 | Thursday 31st of March 2005 08:22:02 AM |

| chinita96 | Thursday 31st of March 2005 10:53:56 AM |
| - Corrections Go an-mhaith a Chelle! Very good Chelle :) Josey - Cinnte! Indeed! You can join us! Be careful here, "chuig" is used insted of go or go dtí when you're talking about going to an event or to see a person, so: Tá mé ag dul chuig an phictiúrlann inniu. Ní théim amach go minic. Tá mé ar an idirlíon gach lá :P I do not go out often. I am on the internet everyday :P Ar tháinig tú chuig an ceacht Gaeilg an tseachtain seo caite? Did you come to the Irish lesson last week? | |

| - Corrections: Chelle - When you want to say "I like" the expression is "Is maith liom", literally meaning, "good is with me". Liom = with me. So to say I don't like neon lights, "Ní maith liom solas neoin". Go maith! Good! Tá mé i mo chónaí i baile beag, agus ní Metro i mo bhaile.
