Irish Practice Game - Dia duit a chairde!

I would like to start a thread of Irish sentences to help people learn. I will start. It's simple, post a sentence or question, anything you want. If you want to ask questions, then ask questions in Irish, if you can. Then the next person should respond in Irish. Obviously the point of the game is to use what you know! Please add English translation for beginners. Go raibh maith agat! Thanks!

Chelle - it should be C'ainm atá ort? This literally translates to "What is the name on you?", and "ort" means "on you". "Tort" is not a word, atleast I don't think. Good job!

Kamil - "An labhraíonn tú Gaeilge?" is literally "Do you speak Irish?" Another way to say it is "An bhfuil Gaeilge agat?", which is more commonly used. This means literally "Is Irish at you?/Do you have Irish?" Excellent job! Ní raibh a fhios agam go bhfuil Gaeilge agat! I didn't know you have Irish! :P

Ian - Instead of "Tá mé ábalta caint (beagán) as Gaeilge", I would just say "Tá beagán Gaeilge agam." It's short and simple :) I´m not too sure about the way you wrote "Cén fios atá ar Éireann ar gach daoine?" My take on it would be "Cad é an t-eolas atá ag gach daoine ar Éirinn?" (literally "What it the knowledge is at everyone on Ireland?"). Good job!

Kamil - "Céard atá ar súil ag an bpictúrlann faoi láthair?" should be "Céard [b]atá[/b] ar súil ins an phictiúrlann fá láthair?" (What is on an eye in the movie presently). Be careful here, [i]tá[/i] is the present tense of the verb "to be", used in statements, while [i]atá[/i] is used in questions.

[b]Tá Million Dollar Baby ar súil ins an phíctiúrlann anocht.[/b]
Literally: Million Dollar Baby is on an eye in the movie tonight, or in just plain English: Million Dollar Baby is showing in the movie tonight.

Chelle - "Tá mé leat ceol traidisiúnta" is literally "I am with you music traditional". Be careful here, leat = with you, and liom = with me. To correctly say "I like traditional music" it would be "Is maith liom ceol traidisiúnta." Good job, it's always good to try and answer. You will never know if it's right until you try and someone corrects you. That's what I'm here for :)

Unfortunately, I don't know the word for enchiladas in Irish :P I don't know if there is one. I will have to check on that. Enchiladas might just have to be the word for now.

English and Spanish are fluent at me, but I am learning Connaught Irish and Ulster Irish. A wee bit of French, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, and Romanian is at me. I love Ulster Irish!

*There is no verb "to have" in Irish, so we use an expression: Tá + ... + agam. (literally, is ... at me) This expression is also commonly used to express you speak a language, or you have a language. Mar shampla (for example), tá giota beag Gaeilge agam = I speak a wee bit of Irish.

And [i]you[/i]?

*Tusa is the emphatic form of tú. In English we just stress the word in speech, in Irish we add to the word, so mé becomes mise, tú becomes tusa.

Tá is the present tense of the verb "to be". So, you can't use that here. In this case, you would use the habitual present for something that happens all the time. Also, "sa" means "in the", with days, you have to use "ar" meaning "on". So, the correct translation would be something like this.

The Irish lessons are on Thursdays and Saturdays = Bíonn ár rangannaí Gaeilge ar an Déardaoin agus ar an tSatharn.

Good job though!

I like New York! A really interesting city with people from all over the world! I love Montreal too as it has a different atmosphere! I guess it is the French influence that makes it interesting!

- Tá mé as an Austráil i dtús ach tá mé i mo chonaí i kill dara den chuid is mó de mo shoal. Chaith mé a lán am i gCiarraí agus an Chláir ach ní dheachaigh mé go dtí an gaeltacht. Tá suim agam i nGaeilge agus teangaithe i gcoitinne ach feicim sna foclóir anois agus arís is oth liom a rá!!:P

Im from austrailia to start but I've been living in Kildare for most of my life. I've spent a lot of time in Kerry and Clare but Ive never gone to te gaeltacht. I have an interest in Irish and languages in general but I look in the dictionary now and again I regret to say!
