Hi everybody,
here’s a new game about accents… before playing it, you may have a look at the explanation below.

[b]How this game works: [/b]
1. Find the stressed vowel in the word given by the previous player and rewrite it with the correct accent mark.
2. Give another word for the next player.

canzone (song) => canzóne
next word: albero (tree)

[b]Accents in Italian[/b]
In Italian, every word has a stressed vowel. A good deal of Italian words are plain or flat (piane), that is the tonic stress falls one syllable back from the last. Though, there are several words in which the stressed vowel is on the third-last or fourth-last syllable.

The accent mark is [b]usually not needed[/b] in normal writing, except when it falls on the last vowel of words formed by more than one syllable (as in \"città, caffè, felicità\"). Though, you should know what’s the stressed syllable in a word in order to pronounce that word correctly.
Unfortunately, there’s not a definite rule to find out what’s the stressed vowel in a word…
Dictionaries (see [url]http://www.garzantilinguistica.it[/url], Italian definitions section) show the tonic stress for every word to indicate the right pronunciation.

In Italian the vowels [b]e[/b] and [b]o[/b] may have either an open sound ([b]è, ò[/b]) or a closed sound ([b]é, ó [/b]). To know how to pronounce open and closed e and o, see the topic “Italian Pronunciation” at [url] http://www.phrasebase.com/forum/read.php?TID=9993 [/url]

- Sì, scusami... ammetto che la distinzione tra il suono chiuso e aperto della e e della o è molto pignola...

In realtà spesso gli italiani sbagliano a pronunciare le e [b]e[/b] le [b]o[/b] chiuse e aperte...molti non sanno, ad esempio, che si dice "lèttera" (e non "léttera"), "pèntola" (e non "péntola"). Inoltre la pronuncia della e e della o aperte e chiuse varia a seconda della regione italiana di provenienza.

In caso di dubbi sulla pronuncia, consiglio di consultare sempre il dizionario.

- Odio queste differenze tra le regioni italiane. Comunque, penso che capisco bene quando usare i suoni. Per me, quando leggo [i]lettera[/i], è automaticamente aperto, forse perché è la stessa cosa in francese.

Per maggiore chiarezza ho inserito anche la divisione in sillabe e ho evidenziato la sillaba che contiene la vocale accentata.

Le parole di origine greca hanno degli accenti un po' capricciosi...
Il prefisso ipo- non influisce sulla posizione dell'accento. I prefissi in generale non sono mai accentati.

si dice allergènico e ipoallergènico.

Io pensavo che il "i" è più accentuato del "e", ma ho capito che influenza il prefisso di origine greca. :)
