italian game #5 - verbs: Interested in other Italian games? Please visit the
Italian Games Index Page
Hi everyone,
I got some e-mails and PM’s lately that made me think of another game… I’ve noticed that people are often wrong with Italian past participles.
Let me give you a little explanation:
As you may know, italian verbs are classified into 3 different groups:
1st conjugation
Regular verbs ending in –
ARE (like amare=to love, mangiare=to eat, parlare=to talk)
past participle of these verbs is formed by substituting the suffix –ARE with –
ATO (amato, mangiato, parlato)
2nd conjugation
Regular verbs ending in –
ERE (like credere=to believe, temere=to fear)
past participle of these verbs is formed by substituting the suffix –ERE with –
UTO (creduto, temuto)
3nd conjugation
Regular verbs ending in –
IRE (like sentire=to hear, partire=to leave)
past participle of these verbs is formed by substituting the suffix –IRE the suffix –
ITO (sentito, partito)
Unfortunately, many italian words are irregular…and they have sometimes odd past participles!
Plus, “passato prossimo” tense (formed by auxiliary essere or avere + past participle) is very commonly used in everyday speaking and writing.
There are no rules about irregular verbs, I’m afraid you have to learn them by heart…
How to play:
I’ll give you an irregular verb in infinitive tense. You will have to write the past participle of that verb and give another (preferably) irregular verb.
The italian dictionary shows past participles for irregular verbs
Also, you can find complete verb conjugations on www.garzantilinguistica.it
