| Italian game #9 - False cognates - Interested in other Italian games? Please visit the Italian Games Index Page Hi everyone :) Beware of words that are not what they seem! A false cognate is a word that looks or sounds similar to one in another language but actually has a totally different meaning. How this game works: Explain the meaning of the two false cognates given by the previous player and make a sentence with both the Italian words. Give another couple of false cognates for the next player. You may indicate false cognates between Italian and any other language… not only English. I\'ll start: Italian word: caldo English false cognate: cold Actual English meaning: hot Italian word for \"cold\": freddo D’estate in Italia fa molto caldo – Summer in Italy is very hot Non mi piace uscire quando fa freddo – I don’t like going out when it’s cold Here’s another false cognate: Italian word: attendere English false cognate: to attend Actual English meaning: ? Italian word for “to attend” : ? ;) Carla | |
I wrote: make a sentence with the two Italian words. In Italian: formare una frase con le due parole italiane. You wrote "orazione"... perhaps another false cognate? "frase" = sentence, phrase "orazione" = prayer Also notice that the word "è" (=is, essere verb) is spelled with a grave accent. ;) Carla | |
