Italian word game #2 - Interested in other Italian games? Please visit the
Italian Games Index Page

Ok, I see you enjoied the previous game, now I\'d like to suggest a harder one. :)

Rules:
I\'ll give you a word, then you have to find as much words as you can that rhyme with the word I gave. When you will not be able to find rhymes any more, I\'ll give you a new word.

Before starting, let me give a little explanation about tonic stress and rhymes in Italian.

1. Tonic stress
In Italian, every word has a stressed vowel. A good deal of Italian words are plain or flat (piane), that is the tonic stress is in the last but one syllable.
The accent mark is not usually required in normal writing, except when it falls on the last vowel of words formed by more than one syllable (as in \"cittą, caffč, felicitą\"). Dictionaries (see http://www.garzantilinguistica.it) show the tonic stress just to indicate the proper pronunciation.

2. Rhymes
Two words rhyme when they have the same letters beginning from the tonic stress on.
Some examples:
cittą rhimes with words ending in “ą”: sarą, dirą etc.
cartčlla rhymes with words ending in “člla”: bella, novella etc.
tąvolo rhymes with words ending in “ąvolo”: cavolo, diavolo etc.

I hope I made myself clear, ask me for more explanations if you need them, and please correct my mistakes if I made some :D

Ciao!
Carla ;)

new word -
Ciao a tutti, :)

actually, quéllo, déllo and néllo don't perfectly rhyme with ombrčllo, fratčllo, bčllo because of the different accents :D

In Italian, while a, i, u vowels are always pronounced the same way, e and o may have two different sounds:
é (acute accent – closed e): it sounds like the english ay in day, pay, say.
č (grave accent – open e): it sounds like the english e in get, let.

ó (acute accent – closed o): it sounds like the english o in oh.
ņ (grave accent – open o): it sounds like the english o in or.

Although accents are not required in normal writing, would you mind to indicate tonic stress (see my post about how to type accented characters)?
You can find the right pronunciation on italian section of the dictionary www.garzantilinguistica.it

Now I suggest to change word. The next word is:

Carla, per favore, ci puoi cambiare la rima? :)
CarlaMonday 21st of November 2005 06:38:01 PM
